ACT 1, MISSION 7

Fighter squadron: 107th Ravens

Description: The 107th leads a bombing action against the Shivan destroyer Ravana.

----
Background
The GTVA is losing ground against skirmishes with the new Shivan destroyer, the SD Ravana, in the nebula. The GTD Delacroix and GTC Champion have been destroyed in the attacks, while the remaining warships are damaged. Alpha wing of the 107th Ravens is sortied to destroy the Ravana.

Walkthrough
This is, canonically, the first mission in the main campaign that will test your skill in bombing runs against warships. You may encounter problems the first time playing this mission, so watch what you are doing.

A recommended loadout is the GTB Medusa armed with three banks of Cyclops torpedoes.

When you start the mission, you will have the Ravana, as well as the Khenmu, a Sobek-class corvette, on your escort list. Hit your afterburners, but do not attack the Ravana right at the beginning. There are some Basilisk-class fighters near you. Take them out with your guns. Once they are destroyed, attack the Ravana.

Order your wingmen to disarm her. Target one of the closest subsystems or turrets of the Ravana. Select the first bank of Cyclops torpedoes, wait until your computer acquires a lock, then fire your bombs. If the Ravana fires on you with one of its turrets, press R and hopefully, the attacking turret will be targeted. Switch to your second bank of torpedoes, approach it and fire another salvo. Switch missile banks again as soon as you fired a pair of bombs from that bank. This allows you to fire another bomb salvo immediately, without having to wait for the current missile bank to reload.

While this is very unlikely, the Khenmu will be replaced with the GTCv Yakiba and GTC Heisenberg should it be destroyed. If the Yakiba is destroyed, the GVC Somtus will be deployed.

Once the Ravana is destroyed, or if all four Allied warships are destroyed, you will be ordered to return to base.

Tips
* The Khenmu parks itself at one of the Ravanas weak spots. If you desire, you can provide bomber cover for the corvette while it batters the Ravana to destruction with its frontal beams.
* The Ravana has weak spots at the front and the rear, the front because it is guarded only by a few laser turrets, and the rear because it is guarded by a single anti-fighter beam and flak cannon.
* Destroying the Weapons subsystem of the Ravana makes its turrets fire much less accurately.
* Make sure to check your wingmates' armament, as several do not have a full complement of Cyclops torpedoes equipped.

Notes
* The Ravana model has a glitch in that some of its turrets can fire through the destroyer, hitting you even if you are supposedly protected by a portion of the Ravanas hull.
* The destruction of the Champion is mentioned only during a failed debrief, not during the mission brief. This is probably a FREDding oversight.

New equipment
* GTB Boanerges
* GTM Cyclops

MISSION 11

Fighter squadron: 56 Squadron

Description: With the Shivans pressing hard, and the GTD Orestes cut off in Delta Serpentis, the GTD Temeraire<b></b>'s battle group must make a desperate run for a Knossos portal in N362.

----
Background
Retreat to Laramis is cut off by a formidable Shivan blockade, and the GTD Orestes is too far away to assist. However, examination of the GTC Dukes navigational data has revealed a Knossos portal in N362 that was possibly activated by the Duke upon its entry into the system. Although there is no information as to where the Knossos leads to, entering it is deemed to be a better option than running a Shivan blockade in a Shivan-infested system.

As the Temeraire distracts Shivan forces at the Laramis node, the 56th must escort the remainder of the battle group, including the Sanctuary, through the Knossos.

Walkthrough
You are strongly recommended to fly a fighter that can mount the GTM Trebuchet and, for good measure, the GTW Maxim. Good choices include the GTF Myrmidon with three Trebuchet banks (or 11 Trebuchet missiles in total), GTF Kulas with a quad Maxim and one bank of 6 Trebuchet missiles, GTF Perseus with two banks of Trebuchet missiles (or 10 Trebuchet missiles in total) and GTF Hercules Mark II with one primary weapon slot allocated to a Maxim, and two full banks of Trebuchets (20 Trebuchet missiles in total). Allocate your wingmen to ships that will allow them to survive an extended period of escort on the battlefield and equip them accordingly.

More than almost any other mission, Forced Entry requires situational awareness and good command of your wingmen. At any point during the mission, call in Delta wing (which are flying GTB Boanerges) if you need any help at eliminating Shivan cruisers faster.

Engage the Mara fighters first. Once they're destroyed, eliminate one Rakshasa and then the other. Save your Trebuchets - you'll need them for later. As soon as the Duke jumps in, scramble at least one wing to defend it. As additional cruisers jump in, run a rolling escort: as ships jump out, move the defending wings to new arrivals.

The biggest threat in this mission are the Aeshma fighters loaded with swarm missiles. Take those out yourself. Again, save your Trebuchets.

When the Lilith jumps in, use two Trebuchets to disable its main beam, then order your ships to ignore it.

The Sanctuary requires escort once it jumps in, but as soon as the Temeraire arrives, the Shivans will switch their attention to it. Order your wingmen to engage the enemy, then boost your engine power, hit your burners, and get to the Temeraire. Fly past it.

When the Abel arrives, use your Trebuchets to disable its beams&mdash;the two main beams, and then the two stinger beams on the rear. The Temeraire can then destroy the Abel with its torpedoes.

Watch out for Shivan bomb shockwaves.

Notes
* This mission is extremely unforgiving, and can require trial-and-error playthroughs. If players aren't positioned to meet the Abel when it jumps in, failure is almost assured.
* Informal polls on HLP have placed Forced Entry as one of the most popular missions in the Freespace community.

Tips
* If you choose to use a Hercules Mark II with the abovementioned loadout for this mission, make sure that you are familiar with the ETS, and be prepared to shunt all energy to Engines in order to cover large distances quickly. The Herc II's lower velocity may not be worth the Maxim and number of Trebuchet missiles it can store, in which case you may be better off with faster craft such as the Myrmidon or Perseus.
* Using a bomber is not recommended for this mission. There are too many things going on at several different areas in this mission for you to focus on bombing runs.
* Keep in mind that the biggest threat all Shivan warships present are their forward beam cannons. Your job in this mission is only to disable the main guns of the Shivan warships so that they will present a much lesser threat to the Allied ships passing through. You can completely ignore any Shivan ships once their main beams are destroyed; the Temeraire will deal with them once it jumps in.
* Some Allied ships require no escort, such as the Solace. Because you only have three wings at the start of the mission, you should assign them only to escort ships that are taking a beating.
* Switch to dual-fire mode only when disabling the Liliths main gun. For every other Shivan warship, including the Abel, a single Trebuchet is usually more than sufficient to destroy a turret.

For this mission, you need a fast, well armed fighter. While the default is the Kulas, I generally stay away from this fighter during this mission: a stray beam from one of the cruisers can deep-six your sensors and make you restart the mission. Also, the Kulaf is way too fragile to attack the Abel, as any torpedo from the Temeraire exploding too close will destroy you. The Myrmadon is usually a better choice, as it is just as fast and well-armed, with more missiles and armor.
The SB Nahema is a Shivan-designed vessel. While it is classified as a bomber, the Nahema is proven to exhibit the speed and maneuverability of a heavy fighter in addition to its bomber-class ordnance. The Shivans are known to have deployed an extremely large number of Nahema bombers against the GTVA during the Second Shivan Incursion and inflicting massive losses on the Alliance using these ships.
Description:
FS2 Demo Tech Room Description
Little is currently known about the Shivan Nahema class bomber. It appears to be very maneuverable and carries a large payload. The Nahema seems to be primarily designed as an anti-fighter escort, using its large missile loads to devastate all but our heaviest fighters. Pilots engaged in a dogfight with the Nahema should be aware of its fighter-like speed.

FS2 Tech Room Description
Either the SB Nahema class is a new Shivan bomber design, or the Shivans are finally taking the GTVA seriously and bringing in their best ships. The Nahema is considered to be the Shivan's most dangerous bomber. It has demonstrated the ability to outrun virtually every fighter in the GTVA fleet. Its powerful laser banks and high-capacity missile bays make it a threat to combat craft of all types, as well as to capital ships.
{{comment|The Nahema is a true fighter-bomber, and it can give a Myrmidon a run for the GTVA fighter's money in a dogfight if it wants. It is also very fast, making it difficult to intercept before it closes to torpedo range and starts launching. These should be the number-two priority of an interceptor pilot, right after any Seraphim. Be thankful for one small favor, though: the AI never bothers with afterburners because Retail Nahemas actually have identical speed on afterburner and military power.

If you're wondering why the Sekhmet is such a good ship, this is why. The Sekhmet is based on this tough SOB. They're tough, fairly quick, maneuverable, and well-armed. The last commentator had it right. Get rid of these things ASAP. While a Seraphim carries more raw firepower, a Nahema is a threat to anything in the area from the size of an assault fighter on up.

It's fast, and it's good, but, unlike the SB Seraphim and SB Nephilim, this is almost always destroyed by a dual Trebuchet impact, reducing its effectiveness.

With every craft in the FreeSpace universe, the Nahema has a flaw to be exploited. Unlike the other Shivan bombers, which are shaped in the oddest of ways and so harder to hit, the Nahema has a large target profile, giving even the fresh-out-the-box FreeSpace pilots a nice kill. Reducing it to shrapnel at medium range with an old-fashioned barrage of GTW Subach HL-7 makes for a partially easy kill, but be advised, your best bet at wiping it out with primaries alone is while it's on a bombing run. Otherwise, don't hesitate to unload your secondaries at a distance. I've seen the odd dual fire GTM Harpoon take care of this bad boy in one go. All in all, however, the Nahema isn't to be trifled with.

It is also to be noted that the Nahema in the demo had two turrets. As if it weren't bad enough.

For some reason, I find the Nahema to be the weakest of all Shivan bombers, excluding the Shaitan. On the lowest difficulty level, you could kill a Nahema with double Trebuchets; under the same situation, a Nephilim would have its front shields depleted with its hull integrity left at 46%, and a Seraphim would be left with no front shields and 63% hull integrity. That happens all the time. If the Nahema is lucky, it might survive dual Trebuchets, but then it would just take a couple of shots from a GTW UD-8 Kayser to kill it.

It could be used as a heavy assault fighter as well. Actually, it is much better fighter than a Basilisk&mdash;not only it is faster, but also has heavier armor. While it is less maneuverable as revealed by its Damp and RotDamp values, most AI assault fighters fly in a straight line anyway, making maneuverability somewhat a moot point when it comes to effectiveness at laying waste to helpless cruisers. However, if a player is piloting a Nahema, the lower maneuverability and the somewhat widely-spaced primary banks makes it less effective. It is also to be noted that the Nahema has a lower secondary bank capacity than the Basilisk (a total of 100 in three banks as opposed to 160 in two). Also, strangely enough, its maximum "overclocked" speed is lower than its normal cruising speed.

Numerically the most common space craft to be found in your crosshairs in the main campaign. A common tactic to take down wings of Nahemas is to fire a pair of Harpoons, then snap off a shot or two at the shield the Harpoons will hit. The Harpoons will punch through the weakened shields and often as not destroy this bomber outright, allowing you to cycle through a wing quickly. If one breaks off and engages you, watch it: you have a date with an Inferno bomblet in your immediate future.
ACT 1, MISSION 8

Fighter squadron: 242nd Suicide Kings

Description: The 242nd Suicide Kings repel a rebel assault on Enif Station, the GTVA's base of operations in the Epsilon Pegasi system.

----
Background
In the contested Epsilon Pegasi system, a vital GTVA installation, Enif Station, is under attack by the Neo-Terran Front. Alpha wing of the 242nd is sortied to oversee the evacuation of civilian personnel and defend the station.

Walkthrough
You can only use the GTF Perseus in this mission. A recommended loadout is two GTW Subach HL-7s, a bank of Harpoons and a bank of Tempest dumbfire missiles.

Your primary objective in this mission is to defend Enif Station, an Arcadia-class installation, from NTF forces. You jump in a few clicks away from the installation, and just in time to see the Cato, a hostile Leviathan-class cruiser, open fire on the Calypso, a civilian Triton-class freighter. On the other side of the installation, the Mannheim, an Elysium transport, is docked to Enif Station.

Start approaching the installation and target the Hercules fighters, which pose a danger to the escaping civilian freighters. If you fail to take them out quickly, you will lose the Calypso and fail to accomplish the secondary objective.

You should destroy the Catos main beam cannon to prevent it from dangerously damaging the station. The Tempest missile is of good use here. Fire at will while the beam cannon is in your reticle, and once the beam cannon is down, the Cato is barely worth your time. You may not have time to destroy it in any case because enemy bombers will soon jump in and attack the station. You should then divert all your power to engines and approach the bombers.

With the agility of the GTF Perseus, you can easily reach the hostile Zeus bombers before they launch their warheads at the station. Even if they do so, you can destroy the bombs by shooting them; destroy them by sight or use your Bomb key to target them (B by default). Several waves of hostile bombers and fighters will keep jump in, but they do not mean much danger for you. Concentrate on the bombers. While you are fighting the bombers, the Hawkwood, a Deimos-class corvette jumps in. Do not engage it. After the Hawkwood bombards the station for a short while, a massive warship will emerge from subspace and stop directly above the corvette. As it does so, all NTF ships, save the Hawkwood and Cato, will jump out. The unknown warship identifies itself as the GTVA Colossus and immediately destroys the Hawkwood with a beam salvo. If the Cato is still alive at this point, destroy it, as the Colossus will be too far away to hit it with its beams.

Once the Cato and Hawkwood (and the Conquest; see the Notes below) are destroyed, you will be authorized to return to base.

Tips
* The Cato occasionally does not hit the Calypso with its first beam salvo. As that single shot alone is enough to reduce the hull integrity of the Calypso by more than half its total hull strength, the miss would mean that the Calypso stands a much higher chance of escaping the area than if the beam were to hit it.
* You may wish to destroy the Fusion Mortar on the Cato. In the time it takes to recharge the main beam cannon of the Cato, the Mortar can actually do around as much damage.
* Do not destroy the Cato until the Calypso has jumped out: as soon as the Cato is destroyed, the Hawkwood will jump in and the Calypso will be in its firing range.
* The Hawkwoods beams are abnormally inaccurate, so don't worry if the Cato goes down before the Colossus arrives; in all likelihood, the more powerful Deimos will do about as much damage as Cato would.

Notes
* The Cato has been neutered by the mission designer. It has no working AAA beams.
* Do not order any of your wingmen to ignore the Hawkwood, or else the Colossus will not open fire on it. If your wingmen keep attacking the Hawkwood, distract them with other orders, such as attacking the Cato or the bombers.
* It is possible for the Colossus to jump in before the Cato is destroyed. If this happens, all of your wingmen will automatically stop fighting.
* If the Hawkwood is destroyed before the arrival of the Colossus, the NTC Conquest, a Leviathan-class cruiser, will jump in and ultimately replace the Hawkwood as the first vessel to be destroyed by the Allied warship.
