REQUIREMENTS AND NOTES
You can update your installation by simply running the Installer again. It will download files that are out of date.

The Installer requires an internet connection to install. This is because:
* It checks to see if it is out of date by pulling the number of the most recent version off of the web.
* It automatically takes you to the download page of the most recent version if your version is out of date.
* It checks that all the files are up-to-date.

Source:
Original thread by Turey

But I Just Want to Play!
If that's the case, head back to the Getting Started(Main) Guide.

If you would like to know more about the project, and what it means for you as a Freespace fan, or how you can contribute, then please read on.

An Brief Introduction to the FSSCP
The FSSCP is headed up by Goober5000 and Taylor, with help from the original project coordinator, Inquisitor.

As project leaders they keep the team organized and working towards set goals. They will request a 'code freeze' before a major release, when programmers aren't supposed to add new features, and instead focus on cleaning up existing bugs. When the team is not preparing for a release, individual programmers are given a lot of leeway in what they can work on.

Lean more about the FSSCP Team.

What Does all of This Mean for You?
No only do you get to experience all of the visual and gameplay enhancements that have been added thanks to the FSSCP, but there is an entire community and tools at your fingertips to create your own missions, campaigns, and stand alone games. The FSSCP allows mod development teams, campaign builders, and individual mission makers to add features that will enhance their work. The whole community benefits from being able to use all of the new features that are implemented to improve past, present, and future work.

Established projects that need features and who are involved in the community will usually have their requested features added first, but if you have any great ideas, please post them in the FSSCP Forum on the Hard-Light Productions Forums (Be sure to do a search first so you're not reposting ideas).

How you can Help out
While the developers are hard at work implementing new features, a critical area that you can help in is reporting bugs and helping coders to track them down. The place to do all of this bug tracking is using Mantis, the bug-reporting tool currently used by the FSSCP team. To learn more, please check out the article covering Bug Reporting.

And Most importantly, get involved in the community that shares a mutual obsession with everything Freespace!

<!-- These sections should not be in this article commenting out until they are placed/edited

So, what do I want to get then?
There are three basic things you'll need or want to get FS2_Open running.

*One, the EXE itself; this is what makes all the nifty graphics enhancements and such possible. By default, however, it'll look pretty much like Freespace 2 (although it may play faster or slower).

*Two, the Launcher. This program does the actual setup of the settings and lets you turn on and off the various improvements. It's basically an enhanced version of the original Launcher that came with Freespace 2. (Although it is not based on the original)

*Three, mv_core from the MediaVP. This isn't necessary to get FS2_Open running, although some things won't work properly if it's not installed. There are other mediaVPs, too, which add better textures, effects, and ship models.

What problems can I expect to run into?
If you're using an old system, you may find that fs2_open runs slowly (Or not at all). Are you still stuck? Somewhat. You won't have a lot of the new, snazzy graphifc effects, but you can use tom's build. This build uses the old Freespace 2 graphics engine, but adds some of the new non-graphics improvements. Mostly, it'll let you play online using the new Fs2NetD.

Is fs2_open buggy?
fs2_open itself is not buggy. FRED2_Open, however, is. Rumor has it that there are still some Volition coders trapped in the FRED2 code, it's so messy. A multi-platform, and reliable, version of FRED is in the works.

How do I play multiplayer!?
Register at the Fs2NetD site. Then, in Freespace 2, enter your account username and password into the options screen (Just like you would for PXO). Then, create a multiplayer pilot and try to start a Multiplayer game. Keep in mind that if you don't have mv_core installed or a valid .cfg file, you won't be able to connect. Also, if you've got any mods installed (and aren't using the mod-switching feature) you'll be booted when you try to connect.

Help! I found a bug! What do I do!?
First: make sure it's a new bug. Go to the FSSCP Forum and type in some relevant phrase in the search box in the lower right of the page. For example, "Joystick not working". Look for any threads that seem like they might have something to do with the problem.

If you don't find any threads about the problem, check Mantis. If you don't feel like registering, use the account:
Username: SCPGuest
Password: password

Finally, post a thread about it in the FSSCP forum or report it using Mantis. Of course, you could do this first, but you risk annoying people by re-asking about a bug that's been asked about before.

An example of this is the warp-failure bug in 3.6. It turned out that in Very Easy difficulty mode, you would never be able to warp out of a mission. This bug was quickly corrected and a notice (along with a link to the corrected build) added to the top of the 3.6 release thread, but threads continually cropped up about it (sometimes more than one a day.) Needless to say, people got VERY tired of replying to threads asking about it.
Getting FreeSpace

Fractux: took out the reference to my FTP server, which no longer exists.

There are several different ways of getting Freespace.

Buy it
Of course, there are still a few copies of Freespace 2 floating around, up for sale on eBay, or maybe lying in the bargain bin at your local computer store - although the latter's pretty doubtful. Freespace 2 has not been mass-produced in the States for several years, so checking places that sell used software is your only recourse. Freespace, of course, has been out-of-print (so to speak) for even longer.

Get it from a friend
Oddly enough, Freespace 2 actually has a clause in the license agreement that states that it's legal to give a copy of Freespace 2 to a friend - as long as it's for noncommercial use. So, be nice to anyone who has it, and maybe they'll burn it for you.

Get it from HOTU
HOTU also has Freespace 2 listed in their downloads. Although this download went down for a brief time in the past, it is one of the most reliable ways of getting Freespace 2 over the internet. Unfortunately, the version included with HOTU is stripped-down.

As of January 30th, 2006 "The game is already updated to v1.2 so there is no need to run the update." according to the readme.txt included with the HOTU version.

Freespace Zone
The Freespace Zone has .bin type images of all three CDs of Freespace 2 and the single CD of original Freespace, archived in the RAR format. Unfortunately the .cue files are not included. There's three ways to deal with this problem.

----
Using Virtual Clone Drive

The first way to fix this is to install using Virtual Clone Drive. Virtual Clone Drive is a free program that creates a virtual drive on your computer, but instead of using a physical CD/DVD, it uses a ripped disk image. When you install Virtual Clone Drive, it will ask you to pick which file types you want to associate with it. Make sure you select at least .bin. When the install is finished, you'll get an icon for Virtual Clone Drive (It's a weird sheep picture). Double-click it, and you'll get this:

Since there's three disks, select 3 from the drop-down box. When you open My Computer, you'll notice three of the drives have the weird sheep icon. Right click on one of these drives, and select "Mount...":

In the Open dialog, navigate to the folder with the .bin files. Change the file type to "Other Images: to view them, then select the first disc. Repeat with the other disks, and you will be ready to install FreeSpace 2.

When you're done with the install, just open up the Virtual Clone Drive window again and change the number of drives back to "Disabled".

----
Other Methods

There's also a freeware program called "CD Mage" that can automatically create the .cue files for you. (You'l have to search for it as its site is mirrored all over the web on free hosts, thus the site linked today may not be there tomorrow.) The Freespace Zone does not mention that the Freespace 2 image files they have are MODE 2 with a block size of 2352.

If you want to just use notepad or other text editor to make .cue files, here's the info. Just copy and paste each into an empty text file and save at disc1.cue, disc2.cue and disc3.cue, placing each in the same folder with its matching .bin file.

FILE "disc1.bin" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE2/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00

FILE "disc2.bin" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE2/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00

FILE "disc3.bin" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE2/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00

BitTorrent
Freespace 2 is soon going to be made available via HLP's BitTorrent tracker. See the main BitTorrent article for more information about this method of distribution.

Get it from another source
There are other sources out there, that may have ISOs of the CDs, the VPs, etc.
You may find some info on this thread of the HLP forums : http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,38195.0.html
