Beta Aquilae Convention

Kietotheworld: /* Specifics of BETAC */ Removed part about firing on escape pods/Silent Threat. User campaigns are non-canon, and Secrets Revealed takes place decades before BETAC

As the industry and economy of the Terran-Vasudan systems recovered from [[the Great War]], support for a more powerful GTVA gained momentum. In 2358, delegates signed into existence the '''Beta Aquilae Convention''' ('''BETAC'''), named after [[Beta Aquilae|the system]] where the constitution was drafted and ratified. BETAC dismantled the governments of the Terran blocs and recognized the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Vasudan Imperium as the supreme authorities of Terran-Vasudan space.

Under BETAC, the Vasudans and the Terrans maintain separate fleets under a single command structure. A warship is designated GT or GV, indicating whether it is Galactic Terran or Galactic Vasudan. The two species openly exchange information and technology, and the most recent fighters and bombers can be modified to accommodate pilots of either species.

Technically, BETAC is but one of a series of conventions and treaties that define how the GTVA functions as a political, military, and economic entity. However, the significance of BETAC as the cornerstone of the Terran-Vasudan alliance has made it the favored target of [[Neo-Terran Front]] propagandists.

BETAC forbids GTVA forces to fire upon unarmed or civilian vessels, including escape pods, medical vessels, and transports carrying civilians. The Neo-Terran Front doesn't recognize BETAC, and so can openly fire upon the aforementioned vessels without remorse or penalty.

The Neo-Terran Front refused to accept the conditions of BETAC and completely ignored its existence, except (apparently) in instances where it could be used against the GTVA, who must follow the convention. For example, when the [[NTC Trinity|NTC ''Trinity'']] was found in the [[Nebula System|nebula]], Arthur Roemig, the captain of the ''Trinity'', referred to his rights as a prisoner of war under the Beta Aquilae Convention. He therefore had no obligation to answer GTVA Command's questions.

==Specifics of BETAC==
We know certain specifics of the Beta Aquilae Convention from in-game data, though, of course, we can not expect to know everything of what is likely to be a long and complex treaty. However, the following has been confirmed by in-game sources:

* Prisoners of war may refuse to answer questions put to them by their captors.
* Civillians are not to be fired upon by either side during a conflict.

Overall, the specifics of BETAC resemble those of the [[Wikipedia:Geneva Convention|Geneva Convention]], and the Terran half of this treaty was probably based on this, or whatever had succeeded it by 2358.

The fastest way to destroy these is to destroy the core crystal. More specifically, aim the conical parts of the crystal that are close to the points where it unites with the blades. Hitting these points will rapidly destroy the core, after which the whole thing blows up. Note that this only applies if the mission designer progammed the CommNode to self-destruct when the crystal is destroyed; this is not a hard-coded feature.''
===CoW Tech Room Description===
Designed to more adequately hold its own against Shivan ships first encountered during the second great war, the Terran Raynor class is the largest production destroyer in service within the GTVA. Its twelve primary beam cannons, each devastating in its own right, can focus at least 50% of the ship's main firepower across most of the ship's length. The Raynor was designed more to provide heavy fire support than to deploy fighter wings, and has a significantly smaller hangar bay as a result. At present, Raynor class vessels generally operate in conjunction with a Hecate destroyer, with the Hecate providing a large fighterbase and the Raynor providing heavy fire support; however, Raynor class vessels have been effectively deployed alone, and can hold their own against all but the most relentless enemy attack. The GTD Raynor measures over three kilometers in length, and has an onboard crew compliment of 12,000 men and women.

===Blue Planet Tech Room Description===
At nearly three kilometres long, the Raynor is one of the largest ships in the Alliance fleet. Several heavy beam cannons and long-range torpedo launchers are placed around her hull, and she is equipped with the most advanced electronics and armour technology the GTVA can afford. The Raynor represents the new strategic imperatives laid out by the Threat Exigency Initiative: a flexible destroyer class with the firepower to eliminate Shivan targets, the speed to outrun them, and the power grid and computers required for rapid precise subspace jumps, all in a package that can be mass-produced. The GTD Orestes is a superb example of this class, serving as the flagship of the 14th battlegroup.
If you're attacking, avoid approaching the top or the bottom, as nearly all of the anti-fighter firepower on the ship can be focused in those areas. The destroyer scale version of the [[TerPulse|pulse weaponry]] on the top and bottom of a Raynor will kill a fighter in only a few hits. The relatively lightly defended sides should be your target.
2355! Terrans and Vasudans alike have begun to shrug off the horrors of the Great War of twenty years ago, and started rebuilding their lives and homes alike. While Vasuda Prime remains a charred, uninhabitable reminder of the power of the Shivans, and contact has yet to be re-established with Sol... nevertheless, the newly formed Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance hurls itself into the void with no fear...

Yet while the GTVA colonises and settles and organises the bright, new age of Reconstruction that has dawned on humanity, life for the average soul could not be more different. Their lives, unlike wheeling-and-dealing politicians or gung-ho GTVA pilots, consist of the drudgery of day-to-day work - yes, even for mercenaries, pilots-for-hire guarding traders from the ever-present threat of piracy.
You are one such mercenary, but your life certainly won't consist of boring daily routine...

:''Wiki contributors: See also'' [[Veteran comments policy]]

==Definition==

When applied to ''FreeSpace'', '''canon''' information is anything that has been confirmed by [[Volition]] as official truth within the ''FreeSpace'' universe. This is primarily derived from in-game material, such as command briefings, mission messages, cutscenes, and the tech room; though it can also be obtained from other sources such as the ''[[FreeSpace Reference Bible]]''. Furthermore, anything stated by a Volition employee (such as the famous quote "The Shivans are merely a symptom of a much bigger problem") is generally also accepted as canon. The official expansion to ''FreeSpace 1'', ''Silent Threat'' is also canon.

Canonicity is typically one of the most important measures of the quality of a user-created story (whether a mission or fan fiction). Linking a story with canon events is an excellent way to establish believability, consistency, and credibility. A story that has a high degree of correspondence with canon information will probably be viewed more favorably than a story which contradicts canon in many places.

==Notes==
* Even canon contradicts itself sometimes (e.g. [[FreeSpace Trivia#Cutscene Quirks|FS2 intro]])
* Some non-canon information, such as Su-Tehp's fleet arrangement list, is commonly used because it is a handy way to fill in gaps in canon&mdash;but this should be treated as one of many possible "expanded universes" which writers should feel free to accept or not accept
* Establishing the "only Volition information is canon" rule helps prevent elitism and strife (e.g. fans of different post-FS2 continuities, such as Inferno and Cold Element, arguing over which should be considered canon).
* Popularity should not dictate what is taken to be official
* See also [http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/general.html Karajorma's writings on FreeSpace 3]

==Wiki Policy on Canonicity==

Because the FreeSpace Wiki aims to be a reliable resource, it is important for it to properly distinguish between canon and non-canon information. This is because readers will usually treat an article as describing canon unless it is clear from the context that it is not.

Generally, canon and non-canon information should appear in separate articles to avoid the possibility of confusing the two. When canon and non-canon information both appear in the same article, the canon should take precedence. There should be strong justification for the presence of non-canon information (for example, deductions which, though reasonably based on established facts, are not definitively known to be true) to reduce the possibility of confusion or distraction from the canon. The non-canon information should always be clearly labelled as such and, wherever possible, separated from the rest of the article through use of the <nowiki>{{non-canon}}</nowiki> tag:

{{non-canon}}

You can use this heading with grey text underneath it like this <nowiki>{{non-canon|Text in grey}}</nowiki>. :

{{non-canon|Text in grey}}

You can change the text color to grey using the <pre><font color=grey></pre> markup.

If you are creating a new article on a non-canon ship, such as the [[HLD Mefdef]] or [[Spacesuit]], be sure to put the following code at the top of the article:
<pre>{{User-made Ships}}</pre>
This marks your ship, and all information regarding it, as non-canon, and automatically adds a link to other [[User-made Ships|user-made ships]] as well.

In both FS1 and FS2, The infinite missile cheat "carries over" in any subsequent missions, even if the player exits the campaign. The only way to disable infinite missile supply without restarting the application is to enable cheat mode and then ''disable'' the cheat.

In FS1 you can also get infinite weapon energy and missile ammunition by enabling the infinite weapon energy and missile ammunition cheat in one of the Tech Room single missions, then quitting the mission. You will have infinite energy and ammo in Campaign, and will still be able to continue the campaign.
<b>Description:</b>

----
==Background==
:''In a few minutes we will be entering the Delta Serpentis sector. We will then begin the most important engagement in our history. We will fight for the very survival of Earth.''
:''Our plan is to rapidly close the distance with the Lucifer so that the Bastion is able to enter subspace just behind her. Once in subspace, we will attack and destroy the Lucifer.''
:''Your task will be to provide cover for the Bastion so that it can quickly converge on the Lucifer.''
:''That Destroyer must be stopped at all costs. Failure is absolutely not an option here, pilots.''

==Walkthrough==
First, a word about the "Escort Delta to the Node" directive. This directive is irrelevant. It will not appear when you play most of the time unless you are slower than a tortoise with three legs and a stomach cramp. You must be within 2000 units of the node and wait for Delta wing to go to the node and depart before the directive will appear. This will occur with about three minutes left. Okay. Get ready for a lot of action. Attack the six Basilisks (Deva and Arjuna) in front of the Bastion first, then head toward the node. Command will order you to go to the node quickly. Expect resistance, a lot of resistance. 6 Manticores (Krishna and Rama) will be the first to challenge you. Then 4 Basilisks (Bheema) will attack. 3 Hammer of Light Thoths (Virgo) will be next in the gauntlet. 3 more Basilisks (Asura) will keep you on your toes. 4 Scorpions (Indra) will next be stepping in your way. By 3:55 Epsilon wing will be ready. 4 more Thoths (Aries) will challenge you. Durga wing with 4 Basilisks will be your next foe. Genma wing will be a mirror image of Durga. The Prophecy (Typhon) is exactly what you need at this point. You'll never destroy it so keep going. Lastly (finally), 3 waves of 3 Dragons (oh, great) will be your last enemy. Now that was a lot of fighting.

Alternatively you could A) get an Ursa, tell your wingmen to ignore one the Basilisks to prevent them from being destroyed (which will start the timer); this gives you all the time you want to make it to the node or B) get a fast fighter and zip past any Shivans that get in your way. In any case make sure that you wait for Delta and the Toths to spawn or else they will not appear in the next mission.

==Alternative Missions==
If the Bastion was damaged to below 35% in the previous mission, then the Bastion will start out with 35% in this mission.

==Notes==
If you'd like to [[cheats|cheat]], this is a mission where you can feel free to do so. Since this is a "Red Alert" mission, there will be no cheat checking at the end. All cheats are thus allowed. Go ahead, try those [[Shivan Super Laser]]s, no? You can even order your wingmen to depart in the beginning, leaving you with most of the kills. Don't do that though, you'll end up with no squadmates in the final mission.

Do not race towards the node as fast as possible and immediately jump out! If you do, and survive dashing past the enemy fighters, the bomber wings will not be deployed and [[Good Luck]] will be virtually impossible to win. Wait for all wings to be in the field of engagement before entering the node.

The Lucifer is actually not invulnerable during this mission. If you cheat with the Shivan super laser, you might be able to score a hit or 2 before she departs. Note that if you destroy the ''Lucifer'' using cheats (Alt-K), she will nevertheless reappear in the next mission.

The PVD ''Prophecy'' will warp in whenever you get to within 2000 meters of the node. Therefore, if you get to node without destroying the first waves of Basilisks, the timer will not have started yet and you will have all the time you want to kill her.

{{shipimage|image=[[Image:colossus320x240.jpg]]|caption=The GTVA Colossus}}

The largest space-faring warship ever constructed by the [[Terrans]] or [[Vasudans]], the '''GTVA ''Colossus''''' was the result of twenty years of joint effort from dozens of contractors from across the [[Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance]]. Logging in with a length of six kilometers, this behemoth was equipped with over eighty weapon turrets, in addition to over 240 combat spacecraft.

With the offensive power that exceeded most [[GTVA]] battlegroups, the ''Colossus'' was designed to combat the [[Shivans]] upon their return to Allied territory. The prospective target was one or more [[SD Lucifer|''Lucifer'']]-class super-destroyers, and it was deemed that the ''Colossus'' would not only have the firepower not only to destroy such a foe, but also to survive multiple hits from a ''Lucifer'''s primary weapon system.

==History==
The first combat deployment of the ''Colossus'' was against the [[Neo-Terran Front]]. NTF forces proved to be no match for the ''Colossus'' and her battlegroup, and the rebels made every effort to avoid direct combat with the warship. It can be truthfully said that it was the ''Colossus'' that was the ultimate factor in the NTF's collapse. With his fleet shattered, and the remnants being actively pursued and destroyed by the ''Colossus'', [[Famous Persons|Admiral Aken Bosch]] gave the order to flee GTVA space to the relative safety of the nebula beyond [[Gamma Draconis]].

With the NTF defeated, the ''Colossus'' was finally to fulfill the role her designers had envisioned for her: the defeat of a second Shivan incursion. However, as it turned out, the challenge was not to be [[SD Lucifer|SD ''Lucifer'']]-class superdestroyers, but rather a [[SJ Sathanas|SJ ''Sathanas'']]-class juggernaut. Twenty years of constant struggle finally culminated with the ''Colossus'''s destruction of the [[SJ Sathanas|''Sathanas'']], all at the cost of moderate damage to the ''Colossus''.

All would have been well was it not for the [[Shivans]] possessing multiple juggernauts. In the closing stages of the Battle of [[Capella]], the ''Colossus'' was deployed to interdict Shivan traffic at the [[Gamma Draconis]] jump node in [[Capella]] to divert enemy forces and attention away from the [[GTD Bastion|''Bastion'']], which was en route to collapse the jump corridor to [[Epsilon Pegasi]]. The ploy succeeded, as the [[Shivans]] first deployed a [[SD Ravana]], then a [[SJ Sathanas|SJ ''Sathanas'']] to engage the ''Colossus''. In her weakened state, it was obvious that the ''Colossus'' would not survive an engagement with another ''Sathanas''-class juggernaut, and Allied Command ordered the ''Colossus'' to withdraw.

However, with the success of the ''Bastion'''s critical mission in doubt, the ''Colossus'' disobeyed the direct order from Allied Command, and refused to disengage. Subsequently, the ''Colossus'' was destroyed with the loss of all hands. The thirty-thousand officers and crew of the ''Colossus'' willingly sacrificed themselves to ensure the continued survival of the billions of individuals making up the Terran and Vasudan species, and ultimately, the [[Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance]].

==Known victims of the ''Colossus''==
*NTCv ''Hawkwood'' (Destroyed at Enif Station)
*NTD ''Repulse'' (Admiral Koth's flagship. Kamikaze attacked the Colossus)
*NTD ''Andronicus'' (Reported destroyed in Command Briefing)
*NTC ''Camisard'' (Reported destroyed in Command Briefing)
*NTC ''Vanguard'' (''Reported destroyed in Endgame'')
*NTCv ''Congreve'' (''Implied destroyed in Endgame'')
*NTCv ''Danton'' (''Endgame'')
*SJ ''Sathanas'' (First, High Noon mission)
*SD ''Beast'' (Destroyed shortly before the second Shivan juggernaut destroyed the Colossus)

==Quotes==
"This is the GTVA ''Colossus''. Fighters, stand clear of hostile warships. All batteries, fire at will!"

"This is the GTVA ''Colossus''. Admiral Koth, you are ordered to power down your engines immediately and surrender. The Polaris jump node is blockaded, there is no escape."

"You are sacrificing thousands of lives for nothing!"

"If only Koth had surrendered rather than playing Martyr, his crew would still be alive"

"A Shivan juggernaut has jumped within range. What's the status of the [[GTD Bastion|''Bastion'']]?"

"We'll hold them back here. Just get the [[GTD Bastion|''Bastion'']] through!"
'''Narrator:''' ''The following is classified level Rho. Unauthorized access is punishable under the GTVA security act, Deneb convention, section 21.3.5. We vanquished the Shivans in the Great War but the hard questions remained. How would we confront the threat of future invasion? The Shivans might return at any time, any place, without warning. How would we fight the next threat to the very existence of our species? In 2345, on the tenth anniversary of the Shivan attack on Ross 128, the Vasudan emperor Khonsu II addressed the newly-formed GTVA General Assembly. The emperor inaugurated an ambitious and unprecedented joint endeavor: The GTVA ''Colossus''.''

'''Khonsu II:''' ''Together we built a civilization on the ruins of the [[Great War]], and now we stand on the threshold of a new era of prosperity and harmony. With Project Colossus, the Vasudan people celebrate our shared covenant of peaceful co-existence and mutual defense of our Terran allies.''

'''Narrator:''' ''The ''Colossus'' is the most powerful space faring warship ever constructed. Spanning six kilometers from bow to stern, the ''Colossus'' has taken over twenty years to complete. Twelve ''Lucifer''-class destroyers can fit within its massive hull. Its state-of-the-art weaponry includes forty-five laser turrets, fifteen flak guns, twelve missile batteries, and twelve beam cannons. The ''Colossus'' wields more firepower than five ''Orion''-class destroyers combined. Sixty fighter and bomber wings are housed in its vast hangar and its crew numbers over thirty thousand. Among its major contractors are industry giants Triton Dynamics, Subach-Innes, and the Akheton Corporation. The alliance now wages war on multiple fronts: in Deneb, Alpha Centuri, Epsilon Pegasi, and the [[Nebula System|mysterious nebula]] beyond Gamma Draconis. Once deployed the ''Colossus'' will end these conflicts swiftly and decisively. If ever the Shivans return to threaten our worlds we will be ready to face the challenge, securing peace for today and for generations to come.''
==Description:==

===FS2 Tech Room Description===
The GTVA ''Colossus'' resulted from an endeavor unprecedented in Terran or Vasudan history. This 6-kilometer-long behemoth is the result of 20 years of joint effort from dozens of contractors of both races. The ''Colossus'' is the most powerful space-faring warship ever made, bristling with over 80 weapon turrets. It also houses 60 fighter and bomber wings and requires a crew of over 30,000. The firepower of the ''Colossus'' is greater than that of most GTVA battle groups.
===Name origin===
In Latin, ''colossus'' meant "large statue". Nowadays in English, a ''colossus'' (lower case, as this is a common name) may refer to anything of giant sizes. ''Colossal'' is a related word.

One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was the Colossus of Rhodes, a giant bronze statue that was constructed over the entrance of the harbour to the city of Rhodes.
==Veteran Comments==
{{Comment|
The GTVA Colossus was an excellent warship, equipped perfectly for the job it was designed for. While engaging the NTF hordes, we always knew the battle was over when the Colossus entered the fray. The Colossus' demise was one of the bravest sacrifices ever made by a ship in the GTVA. It remained in front of a Sathanas juggernaut, even though it had no chance of surviving, so that the Bastion might reach the Epsilon Pegasi node.''

The Colossus is really out of its league against the Sathanas, but it was never designed for killing juggernauts. The Colossus' proper role is hunting and killing destroyers, a task at which it excels. It would take a very large number of smaller ships to threaten the Colossus; witness its single-handed destruction of the NTF.''

The GTVA Colossus is not that great at killing ships of equal size to it as the above veterans have said. The placement of its main beam turrets are all over the ship, meaning that maximum firepower cannot be directed against heavier ships. However, this does also have its advantages. It means that no capital ship can be in a safe spot from it. It is also loaded with massive amounts of anti-fighter and bomber weaponry, making it a nightmare to attack. These anti-fighter weapons are also located around the main beams of the warship, making it more difficult to disable.''

The GTVA Colossus...just saying that makes you get shivers down your spine. When you are fighting out on the "field" and you see the 6-kilometre behemoth, you can't help but to stop and stare at it. The Colossus in my terms means blond and majestic.''

The Colossus is a superb ship in my opinion. Its weapon placement ensures no capship or fighter can attack it and stay safe. While not designed to confront ships like the Sathanas, if properly positioned it can take them on and emerge victorious. Its real strength lies in its anti-fighter weaponry and is a killer machine when confronting smaller warships.''

It seems odd that it is the largest endeavour in Terran-Vasudan history with so many contractors, and with construction beginning well before the NTF Rebellion, and apparently the NTF and/or the average GTVA pilots didn't recognize or know about it. I don't buy it.''

According to FRED-made simulations, it takes approximately 25 Nephilims to kill this thing, multiply that by two or three if you involve fighters escorting both the bombers and the Colossus. The Colossus better hope that it can make use of its 200+ plus fighters, because if not, this thing can get owned by bomber attack; most destroyers carry at least 40 fighters and bombers. Only an idiot would attack the Colossus with another capital ship, however; in general, it takes at least 6 destroyers to defeat one Colly.''

The Colossus is to destroyers what a corvette is to a cruiser, bigger and armed well enough to make mince meat out of them, though well positioned destroyers can inflict notable damage to it they will die in the end. For example, if you do nothing to the NTF cruisers in [[Feint! Parry! Riposte!]], they will maneuver into the Colossus' upper-rear blindspot and will beam the Colossus to death over the course of an hour while she is unable to return fire, as all of her beams are mounted on the front or sides.''

I think that the weak spots of the Colossus are it's rear and top although its rear is defended by four [[TerSlash]]es and its top is defended by two. In a custom-made mission, I made the Colossus travel 10 clicks, while being attacked on all sides by destroyers of different variations. I placed a [[GTD Hecate|Hecate]] on the left side, and it was the first to be destroyed. The last warship that got destroyed was the Demon, which I placed in front of and somewhat above it. The only two surviving warships (which took down the Colossus) were the [[GTD Hades|Hades]] and [[GVD Hatshepsut|Hatshepsut]], both of which I had placed at the rear-left and rear-right of the juggernaut respectively.

The Colly model is infamous for its low moment-of-inertia value, which causes it to swing around like a baseball bat during tight turns. Humans at the far end of the Colossus would experience over 20 G's during one of these swings. It's possible that the crew is kept close to the center-of-mass of the ship to ease this problem. Considering that the Colossus is stated to have a crew of 30,000 while an American supercarrier has less than 1/20th the volume of the juggernaut and has a crew of 5,000, it's possible that crew quarters are relatively small and are only found near the center of mass. Alternatively the GTVA apparently posses artificial gravity technology and could use this to cancel out the inertia.

This thing needs more firepower to justify its size. A lot more. The "more firepower than 5 Orions" boast from the cutscene would mean 15 [[BGreen]]s and 5 [[TerSlash]]es. Replace all the BGreens with [[BFGreen]]s and the TerSlashes with BGreens and maybe it will be adequately armed. More fighters too--at least 1,000. This thing is bigger than 10 Orions, for God's sake.

Unfortunately, the GTVA Colossus is somewhat weak against the SJ Sathanas. If the Colossus attacks from the Sathanas' flanks, seeing how all four of the Shivan ship's main beam cannons are positioned at the front, the Colossus will have an advantage. In a head-to-head engagement, with neither ship being weakened beforehand the Sathanas will win easily.

While doing some FRED sims with the modifications suggested two comments above ([[BGreen]]s -> [[BFGreen]]s and [[TerSlash]]es -> [[BGreen]]s) I've found this thing to be a tank. I spread a dozen destroyers in a circular arrangement and cranked up the timescale. 35 seconds later, the battlefield was littered with corpses of Shivan, Vasudan, and Terran destroyers. I also did a test with a juggernaut and found that if you place it just behind the juggernaut it'll take it down without any problems. Then again, the single rear beam cannon protection issue of the Sathanas has been documented already...

Strangely enough, the Colossus is never mentioned as either a destroyer, superdestroyer or a juggernaut in the game, instead being ambiguously called a warship. This sparked a debate among FreeSpace fans. For more information, see [[GTVA Colossus ship type debate]]}}
== New Requests ==

=== Internal Cockpit View - HUD System Changes ===
In order to get a more immersive in-cockpit view than we currently have, there are a number of necessary changes.
The short-term system changes would primarily involve:
* An option somewhere to turn cockpit view on or off.
* Placing a specified 'standard cockpit model' POF in the mission with it's eyepoint lined up with the players in-ship viewpoint.
* A way to move or replicate the HUD and all it's functionality to fit in with the standard cockpit model. (This would most likely involve completing the HUD_guages.tbl feature, but it would also involve a way to define an alternate 'in cockpit' HUD component layout)

In the long term this feature would involve:
* Being able to define a different internal cockpit on a per-ship basis.
* Different internal cockpit models would need to be associated with different HUD component layouts

The changes are described in detail in this thread [http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,48726.msg990018.html#msg990018 here.]
=== Orders for bomber turrets ===
Currently, bomber turrets only attack your target, which makes them usless as defensive weapons. The idea is to be able to order your turret and make it useful. Added comm options would be:

*turret: (keypress shift-1),
**protect me
**sync to gun (acts as a gunpoint)
**attack my target
**defend all friendlies
**attack any hostile
*all turrets: (keypress shift-2)
'''Fighter squadron:''' [[203rd Scorpions]]

'''Description:''' The 203rd assists the GTVA Colossus in destroying the SJ Sathanas

----
==Background==
Following an attempt at disarming at least two of the Sathanas' forward beam cannons by Alpha wing of the 203rd Scorpions, the Shivan juggernaut entered Capella to be confronted by the [[GTVA Colossus]]. If the Sathanas still has at least one main turret operational after [[Bearbaiting]], the Sathanas also decimated an Allied fleet near the Capella node. Alpha is deployed, once again, to provide bomber support for the Colossus.

==Walkthrough==
[[Image:Screen005.jpg|thumb|The Death of the Sathanas]]

You are not allowed to choose your loadout for this mission. You will be flying the [[GVB Bakha]], armed with the [[GTW Mekhu HL-7]], [[GTW Akheton SDG]], a bank of [[GTM Trebuchet]]s and a bank of [[GTM Helios|Helios torpedoes]].

This can be the easiest mission in the whole game if you performed well in the previous mission. If not, you still have work to do because the Sathanas can take out the Colossus even with one of its forward beam turrets operational. Fortunately, due to differences in timing, frames per second, maneuvering, etc., the Colossus is usually safe once you're down to one turret. If the flak guns are still operational, you may want to destroy them yourself, or order your wingmen to take them out for you.

The Basilisks can be really annoying, but you can usually take several out with Trebuchets at long range before you engage the Sathanas. Fortunately, there are only eight of them, as opposed to the many wings and waves of Shivan fighters in Bearbaiting, so when the second wave arrives, just order your wingmen to cover you. If you have gotten all four turrets, feel free to take them out yourself to get credit for the extra kills.

You can ensure you get the kill for the Sathanas by making sure you inflict more damage on it than any of your wingmen. You can do this by destroying AAA and flak turrets with your missiles and shooting down subsystems with your primaries. If your wingmen are busy with the Basilisks or if you've ordered them to depart, this should be pretty easy. After a 10-minute exchange of beam fire, the Sathanas throws in the sponge.

==Notes==
* Most of the GTVA Colossus' beam cannons are changed to the [[LRBGreen]] in this mission. This was a quick fix to a problem caused by the Colossus being given a simple [[ai-chase]] order to attack the Sathanas. This causes the Colossus to circle the Sathanas from outside the targeting range of a normal [[BGreen]] or [[TerSlash]].
* This mission gives you 10 000 points if you manage to get the Sathanas on your list of kills. This can be achieved by you inflicting more damage on it than any of your wingmen, or by inflicting at least 30% of non-beam damage.
* If you order your wingmen to ignore the Sathanas, so will the Colossus. (Retail only)
* If the fighterbay of the Sathanas gets disabled, you may not be able to complete the Destroy Cancer objective.

{{shipimage|image=[[Image:colossus320x240.jpg]]|caption=The GTVA Colossus}}

==History==

===FS2 Tech Room Description===
===Name origin===

==Veteran Comments==

While doing some FRED sims with the modifications suggested two comments above ([[BGreen]]s -> [[BFGreen]]s and [[TerSlash]]es -> [[BGreen]]s) I've found this thing to be a tank. I spread a dozen destroyers in a circular arrangement and cranked up the timescale. 35 seconds later, the battlefield was littered with corpses of Shivan, Vasudan, and Terran destroyers. I also did a test with a juggernaut and found that if you place it just behind the juggernaut it'll take it down without any problems. Then again, the single rear beam cannon protection issue of the Sathanas has been documented already...}}
==Background==

Following Alpha's disarming of at least two of the Sathanas' main guns, the Sathanas entered Capella to be confronted by the [[GTVA Colossus]]. If Alpha wing failed to destroy even one forward turret in [[Bearbaiting]] the Sathanas also decimated an Allied fleet near the Capella node.

==Walkthrough==

This can be the easiest mission in the whole game if you performed well in the previous mission. If not, you still have work to do because the Sathanas can take out the Colossus even with one beam turret operational. Fortunately, due to differences in timing, FPS, maneuvering, etc., the Colossus is usually safe once you're down to one turret. If the flak guns are still operational you may want to order your wingmen to take them out for you.

The Basilisks can be really annoying, but you can usually take several out with Trebuchets at long range before you engage the Sathanas. Fortunately, there are only eight of them, as opposed to the multitude in Bearbaiting, so when the second wave arrives, just order your wingmen to cover you. If you've gotten all four turrets, of course, feel free to take them out yourself to get credit for the extra kills.

You can ensure you get the kill for the Sathanas by making sure you inflict more damage on it than any of your wingmen. If your wingmen are busy with the Basilisks or if you've ordered them to depart, this should be pretty easy. After a 10 minute exchange of beam fire, the Sathanas throws in the sponge.
<b>Description:</b>

----
==Background==
The SJ Sathanas entered Gamma Draconis, despite the destruction of the Knossos portal. The bulk of the Allied Fleet is amassing in Capella, Alpha One's Squadron must weaken the Sathanas and it's supporting Demon class destroyer in preparation for the engagement with the fleet and eventually the Colossus.

==Walkthrough==

Hit your burners and divert all energy to engines right at the beginning of the mission. Approach on the [[SJ Sathanas]] continously firing [[GTM Trebuchet]]s onto the nearest turret. But as soon as you get within the range of the [[GTM Helios]] warhead (1625 meters), switch to Helios and target the nearest turret from a distance. But DO not shoot the warhead itself yet. Start approaching on the turret and when you are quite near to it, hit your secondary attack. Try to do this at maximum speed (with afterburners).<br><br>
You will have less chance to follow the trick above in the case of the second turret. Target the second turret and try to acquire a lock on it. If you succeed in doing it, hit your burners and fire the [[GTM Helios]] warheads at close range. Call in the repair (rearm) ship, and dock with it, ignoring anything in your vicinity. If you practice much, you can shoot down all four big beam cannons on the Sathanas. But there is one important role to remember: Do not entrust the AI with destroying the turrets. They are too stupid to do anything complicated. They have a good use as interceptors, however. Call in the reinforcements as soon as you get close to the Juggernaut.<br><br>
But sadly, the mission doesn't end here. There will be a [[SD Demon]]-class destroyer (SD Beleth) jumping in. You have to prevent it from escaping. The [[GTM Trebuchet]]s are good against its anti-fighter turrets, but use the [[GTM Helios]] to attack the ship's hull (obvious). Disabling the Beleth can make the ship unable to escape giving you more time to look after the fighters.

Kietotheworld: /* Criticisms of the Theory */ Colossus Spelling

{{non-canon}}
The Shivan Manifesto is a long, complex document, which describes (in detail) a theory on the origins and motivations of the Shivans during the events of the Freespace saga. Though the theory has gained some support, it has many detractors, and is not considered canon, nor is it generally accepted by the FS community.

== Summary of the Manifesto ==

The theory outlined in the Manifesto is based on the idea that the subspace travel performed by Terrans and Vasudans is harmful to subspace. It claims that the Shivans are energy beings from subspace, that use a kind of exoskeleton to maintain integrity in our own plane of existence, and their attacks against the two races are the Shivans aggressive defence of their home dimension whenever large levels of subspace activity occur in any given area of space.

The theory also explains the Shivans' motivation for destroying Capella as an act of fear, lest the GTVA deploy more Colossi in large numbers, as they were not able to understand how a civillization's technology could evolve so quickly. It also suggests that this retreat is due to the SOC mission where you are ordered to destroy a number of unknown Shivan devices, which the Manifesto states are responsible for Shivan life-support.

== Support for the Theory ==

The theory itself is based largely on conjecture from both the Ancients and Bosch monologues in Freespace 1, and Freespace 2, respectively, and a number of the ideas (such as the Shivans as energy beings) are not mentioned by any canon sources.

== Criticisms of the Theory ==

According to its detractors, the theory omits or ignores many significants pieces of information from the games, and overemphasizes the significance of others. It also makes several significant statements based almost entirely on guesswork, with no indication from either game to base these statements on.

Specifically, it makes major assumptions about the nature of the ETAK device, the Shivan Comm Nodes and the Shivans themselves without ingame evidence, and contradicts in game evidence on several points (for example, the beleif that the Shivans would be frightened of the possibility of multiple [[GTVA Colossus]] class vessels without any evidence that such vessels exist).

A more detailed list of the criticsms of the theory can be found on the [[Criticisms of the Shivan Manifesto]] page.
{{shipimage|image=http://www.freespace2.com/images/ship_colossus/smpic.jpg|caption=The GTVA Colossus}}
==Overview==

The largest space-faring warship ever constructed by [[Terrans]] or [[Vasudans]], the '''GTVA Colossus''' was the result of twenty years of joint effort from dozens of contractors from across the [[Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance]]. Logging in with a length of six-kilometres, this behemoth was equipped with over eighty weapon turrets, in addition to over 240 combat spacecraft.

With the offensive power that exceeded most GTVA battlegroups, the Colossus was designed to combat the [[Shivans]] upon their return to Allied territory. The prospective target was one or more Lucifer-class super-destroyers, and it was deemed that the Colossus would not only have the firepower not only to destroy such a foe, but also to survive multiple hits from a Lucifer's primary weapon system.

==History==

The first combat use of the Colossus was against the [[Neo-Terran Front]]. NTF forces proved to be no match for the Colossus and her battlegroup, and the rebels made every effort to avoid direct combat with the juggernaut. It can be truthfully said that it was the Colossus that was the ultimate factor in the NTF's collapse. With his fleet shattered, and the remnants being actively pursued and destroyed by the Colossus, Admiral Aken Bosch gave the order to flee GTVA space to the relative safety of the nebula beyond [[Gamma Draconis]].

With the NTF defeated, the Colossus was finally to fulfil the role her designers had envisioned for her: the defeat of a Shivan incursion. However, as it turned out, the challenge was not to be Lucifer-class super-destroyers, but rather a Sathanas-class juggernaut. Twenty-years of constant struggle finally culminated with the Colossus' destruction of the [[SJ Sathanas]], all at the cost of moderate damage to the Colossus.

All would have been well was it not for the [[Shivans]] possessing multiple juggernauts. In the closing stages of the Battle of [[Capella]], the Colossus was deployed to interdict Shivan traffic at the [[Gamma Draconis]] jump node in [[Capella]] to divert enemy forces and attention away from the GTD Bastion, which was en route to collapse the jump corridor to [[Epsilon Pegasi]]. The ploy succeeded, as the [[Shivans]] first deployed an [[SD Ravana]], then a Sathanas to engage the Colossus. In her weakened state, it was obvious that the Colossus would not survive an engagement with another Sathanas-class juggernaut, and Allied Command ordered the Colossus to withdraw.

However, with the success of the Bastion's critical mission in doubt, the Colossus disobeyed the direct order from Allied Command, and refused to disengage. Subsequently, the Colossus was destroyed with the loss of all hands. The thirty-thousand officers and crew of the Colossus willingly sacrificed themselves to ensure the continued survival of the billions of individuals making up the Terran and Vasudan species, and ultimately, the
[[Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance]]. They shall never be forgotten.
===FS2 Tech Room Description===
The GTVA Colossus resulted from an endeavor unprecedented in Terran or Vasudan history. This 6-kilometer-long behemoth is the result of 20 years of joint effort from dozens of contractors of both races. The Colossus is the most powerful space-faring warship ever made, bristling with over 80 weapon turrets. It also houses 60 fighter and bomber wings and requires a crew of over 30,000. The firepower of the Colossus is greater than that of most GTVA battle groups.
===Veteran Comments===
''The GTVA Colossus was an excellent warship, eqipped perfectly for the job it was designed for.
<br>
<br>
==General==
===Description and History===
----
The largest space-faring warship ever constructed by [[Terrans]] or [[Vasudans]], the '''GTVA Colossus''' was the result of twenty years of joint effort from dozens of contractors from across the [[Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance]].

==Colossus, the cutscene==
<b>WORD BY WORD</b> <br>
<b>Narrator</b>: <i> The following is classified level Rho. Unauthorised access is punishable under the GTVA security act, Deneb convention, section 21.3.5. We vanquished the Shivans in the Great War but the hard questions remained. How would we confront the threat of future invasion? The Shivans might return at any time, any place, without warning. How would we fight the next threat to the very existence of our species?
In 2345, on the tenth anniversary of the Shivan attack on Ross 128, the Vasudan emperor Khonsu II addressed the newly formed GTVA general assembly. The emperor inaugurated an ambitious and unprecedented joint endeavour. The GTVA Colossus. </i>

<b>Khonsu II</b>: <i>Together we built a civilisation on the ruins of the great war, and now we stand on the threshold of a new era of prosperity and harmony. Project Colossus the Vasudan people celebrate our shared covenant of peaceful coexistence and mutual defense of our Terran allies. </i>

<b>Narrator</b>: <i>The Colossus is the most powerful space faring warship ever constructed. Spanning six kilometres from bow to stern the Colossus has taken over twenty years to complete. Twelve Lucifer class destroyers can fit within its massive hull. Its state of the art weaponry includes, forty-five laser turrets, fifteen flack guns, twelve missile batteries and twelve beam cannons. The Colossus wields more firepower than twelve Orion class destroyers combined. Sixty fighter and bomber wings are housed in its vast hanger, and its crew numbers over thirty thousand. Among its contractors are industry giants Triton Dynamics, Subach-Innes and the Akheton Corporation
The alliance now wages war on multiple fronts in Deneb, Alpha Centuri, Epsilon Pegasi and the mysterious nebula beyond Gamma Draconis. Once deployed the Colossus will end these conflicts swiftly and decisively. If ever the Shivans return to threaten our worlds we will be ready to face the challenge, securing peace for today and for generations to come. </i>

The GTCv Deimos was a Terran corvette in Freespace 2. They are faster and more maneuverable than [[GTD Hecate]] and [[GTD Orion]] class destroyers. They are powered by Vasudan designed reactors.

Their armour is made from collapsed-core molybdenum, which gives protection against beam fire, which gives it 80% of the hull strength of the much larger Orion and Hecate destroyers.

Deimos corvettes have excellent anti-fighter and bomber coverage, and four large anti-capital ship beams. Its anti-capital ship firepower is close to that of a Hecate, and it's anti-fighter coverage far outstrips an Orion's.

Two Deimos class corvettes (The GTCv Actium and the GTCv Lysander), along with 2 wings of fighters, were the first GTVA vessels to officially come into contact with a [[Ravana]] class vessel, designated SD Ravana. One of the corvettes was destroyed.
