Description
Into the Halls of Valhalla (ITHOV) is a subsequent campaign to the community-wide known Derelict. The player's character is Commander Wesley McCrae, who gets reassigned to the Tania Australis system after being caught on espionage. McCrae gets ace wingmen, who are also banished from the core GTVA worlds. Initially, they face off a pirate organization, but later in the series of missions, it turns out that the GTVA faces off three enemies at once, all of them are also engaging each other.

The precedents of ITHOV are explain in Police Action, a four-mission-long minicampaign that is the official "Demo" for the main campaign.

Into the Halls of Valhalla requires FreeSpace Open. The missions were tested in the July 27, 2006 build. Older builds might also be able to run ITHOV, but I cannot guarantee that all missions work as they should. It is recommended that you use the July 27, 2006 (or newer) build to play the campaign.

The Campaign has been released. Look on the link below to download it.

FREDder's Notes
Okay, the campaign looks inspired by Deus Ex Machina, but that's only half of it. I had the idea to make a nonsense campaign, and was surprised that no one had done one like that before. Until I found DEM, which made me spend 5 days crying in a cellar. After that little bout, I decided to actually go and make another campaign sorta like it. The biggest thing I did copy from DEM was the "author" getting the Bosch comm ani. The Rakshasa message in mission 1? That's not based off of the unpronouncable destroyer in DEM, I just couldn't spell the class name! Other stuff may have been subconscious. Who knows.

Player Comments
This is probably the most hilarious freespace campaign out there. There's a huge WTF feeling all along... I was laughing so hard i could barely shoot straight. The same comment goes to the sequel, wich is pretty much the same entertaining value, simply hilarioustastic... I simply do not understand how an awesome campaign like this has still not been voice acted. ~KR
Story
Only a few short months after the end of the Second Shivan Incursion, amongst the chaos of Capellan refugees and ever-heightening levels of piracy, mysterious things have begun happening on the edge of GTVA space. Unexplained disappearances, strange rumours...

You are Lieutenant Sunder Marcel, recently transferred to the 103rd Shadow Guardians. Your squadron has been charged with uncovering the cause of these disturbances, to venture out into the unknown and return with an answer.

But something's strange about this case. The clues have no meaning, and reality is beginning to slip...

Everyone has a limit...

Author's Notes
Transcend has been criticised by some for having a confusing or downright incomprehensible story. This was unavoidable. From the beginning of the project I wanted to make a campaign that showed rather than told the story to the player and force them to work things out for themselves, in contrast to Syncs - which had a few missions which were little more than one of the characters spouting exposition for the player's benefit. This meant that Transcend would definitely not be to everyone's taste, and to be honest it was received far better than I was expecting. It also meant there would be some ambiguity surrounding certain aspects of the plot, which was another motivation for me to attempt this kind of storytelling as some people presented their own theories on the story, which I found very interesting to read. (A couple of people got extremely close to my version of events, incidentally.)

Another thing it's been criticised for is repetitive missions. I don't really have anything to say about that other than it's completely true and I'm not sure what I was thinking with some of those missions, which is particularly embarassing as Sync suffered from the same problem.

One misconception I'd like to clear up is that Transcend is not a sequel to Sync. It does have connections to the story, but it was designed so people who hadn't played my earlier campaign could play it as well.

References
I included a few references to a bunch of pretty much random things throughout the campaign. There's actually probably a few more things I forgot to mention here as well. Most of them are ridiculously vague to the point where they might not even be considered references, but whatever.

GTD Voran - Agratis Voran is a demo character in the MMORPG Clan Lord. (All demo characters have the first name 'Agratis'.)
GTD Brax - Another demo character from the same game.
GTC Tanner - Tanner Mirabel is a character in Alastair Reynold's Chasm City.
GTT Incontrovertible - A friend of mine wrote a fanfiction for David Brin's Uplift series which involved a ship by this name. I don't know if he made it up or if it's actually in Uplift, I've never read it.
GTC Brice - Name of a character from the film Below.
Delays
Transcend was actually complete in late March. However due to a slew of problems, specifically Raa's Kelpie being unplayable (the game crashed when you shot at it) and SCP bugs, it was delayed for four more months until everything was fixed and the campaign was released.

Player Comments
The transcend campaign is a masterpiece. The author who thought of all this is a hero. This campaign thrilled me, scared me, and entertained me. I would say it's almost a stand-alone game... The triggers are simply amazingly well done as well as every details. Fantastic, eery atmosphere and gameplay. Some parts were actually scary. If you are a fan of scary science fiction, I definitely recommended downloading and playing this campaign... And i think it's integrated in the latest SCP anyway. Good Job. ~KR
Derelict is widely considered to be one of the best user-created mods. Derelict SCP was enhanced in 2006 by a complete set of voiceovers.

Story
Five years have passed since the jump node to the Capella system was collapsed, sealing off a massive wave of Shivan Juggernaughts from pushing further into GTVA space. The supernova and subsequent nebula hang like a growing scar throughout the GTVA as light from that event continues to spread across our worlds.

The loss of Capella created serious economic hardship throughout the Alliance, a new Great Depression is upon us. The complete loss of the planetary resources and economic foundation of a rich world was devastating in its own right, but that is not all. Two hundred million refugees continue to walk the stars, seeking a new home. Some have settled, while others have been forced to move from place to place, hoping that the next place may welcome them with open arms.

While the Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance continues to hold, the current depression has given way to political instability. Local governments rise and fall as often lunar tides, organized crime and piracy have prospered in a black market environment. It seems no one is immune. Radical voices are raising echoes not heard since the blood cries of the Neo-Terran Front. The Ghosts of the past are catching up with us.

Since collapsing the Capella Jump Node, the recovering GTVA Fleet has spent much of its time and resources in police actions. Our own resources are taxed to the limit, and yet still we have the challenge to live up to our calling. Even so, it is alarming that there are those who are starting to take matters into their own hands.

What happens in the political arena is not our concern today. As part of the GTVA forces, ours is to keep space safe for our citizens

You are to take a new tour of duty with the 212th Silver Scythes squadron in the Tau Sigma cluster, a remote group of systems beyond the Altair Jump Node. These are mining colonies, and while the GTVA presence is small, it is nontheless important.

This is not an easy assignment, pilot. You will often be working in less-than-ideal conditions, but we trust that your skill will help to bring some much needed relief to this region.
Description:
FS1 Tech Room Description
Developed in a joint operation by the Vasudan and Terran governments, the GTF Ulysses is an excellent all-around fighter. It offers superior maneuverability and a high top speed.

FS2 Tech Room Description
Affectionately nicknamed The Bat by its pilots, the GTF Ulysses is a well-designed craft that has had a far longer useful life than its engineers ever imagined. Developed jointly by Terran and Vasudan contractors, the Ulysses was first deployed near the end of the Great War. Its excellent maneuverability and high top speed give it an agility that pilots love, but at a cost of thin armor and a small secondary weapon loadout. The Ulysses is a better choice for offensive missions than defensive ones.

Developer Comments
Offers superior maneuverability and a high top speed. Smaller missile payload than other GTA fighters.

Veteran Comments
The GTF Ulysses is one of the oldest fighters the GTVA is using after the Reconstruction Period. Originally designed by both Vasudan and Terran contractors during the The Great War, the first deployment of the GTF Ulysses-class involved the capture of a Shivan Dragon class fighter. The mission succeeded. After this mission, the production of the GTF Ulysses-class was begun. The Ulysses appeared to be a true interceptor fighter. The speed and the maneuveribility of this fighter can make it a dangerous opponent in dogfights despite of its relatively low firepower. Pilots nicknamed the Ulysses as the bat after its shape. Since there are more advanced GTVA fighters, like the GTF Loki or the GTF Perseus, the GTVA seems to have decreased the number of deployments of the Ulysses-class. The Ulysses carries four primary and a single secondary bank. The secondary bank is capable of carrying 16 Harpoon missiles, and it is also compatible with the GTM Trebuchet and the older GTM Phoenix V missiles. Some pilots find the Ulysses too maneuverable, and because of its high turn rate, the Ulysses is unable to do smooth movements, decreasing the chances of a pilot to hit a smaller target. Since this class of fighter is small in size, it is relatively hard to hit. The Ulysses seems to be the best choice for use against the more dangerous and much smaller SF Dragon.

The Ulysses is my personal favorite fighter and in the hands of one who can appreciate the high maneuverability, it more than makes up for the low missile capacity.

I'll second the comments about its handling. It turns extremely well, moves pretty quick, and it's tough to hit. An adept pilot can become well schooled in ways to avoid presenting the ship's broad top silhouette, forcing chasers to try for hits on the narrow side and rear profiles. The small secondary bank limits the realistic ability of this craft to wade through a wing or two of enemy ships quickly, but as a dueling and harassing fighter it's near the top of its class.

Avoid dealing with capital ships in "The Bat". Its small missile banks and low shield/hull strength will be your death if you do.

I always wanted to love the Ulysses, but in the end it was never quite up to my standards of durablity. Fun to fly and ideal for a 1v1 turning fight, but it can't induce the same kind of show-stopping, Shivan-leveling pyrotechnics that a Hercules or even an Apollo can. Keep that in mind before trying to wade through a wing of enemy fighters on your own in a Ulysses.

The Ulysses is a neat little fighter to fly, and excelent for defensive maneuvers, but really is limited to interception or covering less maneuverable but more powerful fighters while they get the real job done

Am I the only one who thinks the Ulysses is a useless mistake? I don't see why people can even try flying this thing through a mission. I usually choose either the Valkyrie or a heavier fighter in the FS1 missions, and in FS2 it's cannon fodder.

Not really. Its only good for dogfighting, not much else. Can't do escort, can't protect bombers, and definitely cannot attack ships.

Excuse me? Can't do escort? This thing is one speedy SOB, perfect for interception.

----
Background
The 107th embarks on a recon mission in the nebula beyond the Knossos portal, only to discover the NTF has beaten them to it.

Walkthrough
The first mission in the nebula. Take off, even without authorization (You are not yelled at, if you do), and follow Zeta 1. During your journey, you encounter several Shivan fighters. I don't think I have to explain what to do with them. In the nebular environment, you can hardly aim, so do not get nervous easily. Use your rockets to better handle the fighters. With Zeta 1, you discover a derelict Terran cruiser (NTC Trinity, GTC Fenris-class) inside the nebula. Try to protect the cruiser as long as you can.

You cannot save the NTC Trinity from the SF Dragon-class fighters, and the boarding party will also be lost. Jump out of the nebula quickly. If the Shivans destroy you in the last stage of the mission several times, you can stay away from the battle without engaging the Shivans and see how they vaporize the Trinity. Active your subspace drive and depart. Command can only say the truth: There was nothing you could have done to save the Trinity. Thanks to the designer of the mission, you do not stand a chance to defend it at all. If you manage to defend it by using cheats, you won't be permitted to proceed with the campaign

I thought it blows up by a SEXP anyway?
Fighter squadron: 242nd Suicide Kings
Description: The Colossus goes on the offensive

----
Background
The GTVA takes the Colossus on the offensive, hoping to break the backbone Admiral Koth's fleet, the NTD Repulse.

Walkthrough
Not an easy one. You have to face a whole squadron of GTF Hercules fighters, and two hostile cruiser (NTC Majestic and NTC Refute). They are both of GTC Fenris-class, but they are a danger for your squadron. Try to lure the fighters away. You can lure 6 fighters away on the first approach. Try to avoid face-to-face combat, they have more firepower and their shields are better. But you are more maneuverable and faster, if you get on well with an interceptor fighter, you can take down the Hercules fighters without much trouble.

Taking down the second group of fighters is far more difficult. Approach on the fighters carefully, and pull back if they seem to begin approaching on you. You have to do the same like you did with the first wave, but the cruisers here are within firing range, so this part is far more difficult. Take down some of the anti-fighter beams, and after it, assist your wingmen in taking down the fighters. After the fighters are down, do not continue (or start) attacking the cruisers. Pull back and rearm.

The GTVA Colossus will jump in and will take care of the cruisers. But it is not over here, an NTF destroyer (NTD Repulse) jumps in and attack the GTVA Colossus. She is also launching fighters, you should engage those. The Colossus will handle the destroyer. Pull back to the GTC Rampart and wait until the hostile fighters get within its range. The Rampart is not endangered by the Repulse.

Kr's Notes : For some awkward reason, the Repulse get's halfway inside the colossus sometimes before it is destroyed... and when it blows up, it does a whooping damage on the colossus.
Description:

----
Background
You have been chosen to fly undercover with the Iceni, and gather information about the new ETAK project.

Walkthrough
Scan both friendly capital craft right at the start for some brownie points with SOC. Aside from that this a standard asteriod-field escort mission, you can just fly along next to the Iceni and blast any bombs or rocks that come its way. Defending the Hinton as well will be more of a problem, as Faustus science cruisers are less then sturdy. Ordering your wing to defend the Iceni and making the defense of the Hinton your sole responsiblity generally works...but see below. Concentrate on killing bombers and bombs, followed by anything that you find particularly offensive.

During this mission two capital craft will attempt to attack the Iceni, a Sobek and a Mentu. You would be well advised to keep the Iceni between you and the Mentu, since the Iceni will eat the cruiser alive no matter what you do, and the cruiser has AAA beams and flak guns that can hurt you. If those VSlash beams on the Sobek make you nervous for your charges feel free to take them out, but try not to get murdered by the corvette's antifighter defenses. As long as you've been doing a reasonably good job keeping the Iceni safe, its paired BGreens will take care of the enemy capital craft without your intervention.

The Hinton, thanks to its fragile nature, has a tendancy to get blasted. You can witness an amusing Volition flub if it is destroyed by a collision with an asteroid (or the Iceni, see below), as Snipes will say the Vasudans have destroyed it regardless of who layed the final blow and/or whether any Vasudans are actually present.

Unfortunately both the Iceni and the Hinton try to jump out at the same waypoint. And have the same speed. This results in a long series of collisions at the node before they jump out. Stay away from them while this is going on, because they will probably jump out at odd angles and you don't want to get run over. Roughly 50% of the time the Iceni batters the Hinton to death at the node regardless of your efforts. Take that as yet more evidence that the NTF must be destroyed for the good of the Terran race.

This is the only campaign mission where you can actually get vasudan kills on your list, so blast em all ups all you can.
Fighter squadron: 134th Barracudas
Description: You will help the NTF with a raid on GTVA cargo depot.

----
Background
Snipes has been reassigned, and now you have no SOC contact. What's worse: you have been recognised as a traitor.

Walkthrough
As the mission begins, you are presented with a small cargo depot. Stop your engines and do not attack the sentry guns. The sentry guns can inflict damage on the NTF fighters shield. If you want, you can go for the cargo kills, but that will proove difficult, because the sentrys use flails and push you back, hard. An Elysium jumps in, a civilian ship. You will be given the order to destroy it. Do not follow these orders. If you do, even though the mission will not end immediatly, when you return there will be problems.

Either way, you will trigger the other ships of your wing to attack. The best method from a purely practical standpoint is to ignore the Elysium and park yourself directly behind the other ships of your wing so you can tear them to shreds with minimum effort once they go hostile.

Unfortunatly, to make matters worse, it seems your jump drive has failed. You will need to take out the ships before it comes back online.

This is a pure dogfight mission, and your goal is simply to outlast the NTF fighters; not just your wing but others will arrive as well.

You will recieve no information on Snipes after the mission.
Description:

----
Background
The GTVA wants to capture the NTT Sunder, an Argo class transport carrying valuable supplies relating to ETAK. Fortunately the pilot is an Allied operative however the transport has a vast fighter escort which must be dealt with. Fortunately the 99th Skulls (the elite of the elite) are on hand to help out. They destroy the escort and bring in the GTA Hamako to block all rebel transmissions from the area. It won't be easy going though, two Aeolus cruisers and numerous fighters attempt to stop you.

Walkthrough
Sabatoge!
The mission briefing will make this sound like a simple mission. Then again, the last mission sounded simple too. About 10 seconds into the mission, explosions will take out half of the ships and leave the remaining standing. They will all be marked hostile, and it will become apperant that you and Beta 2-Commander Snipes-are trators to the surviving ships. Quickly eliminate the ships, and remember to help Snipes out as well. Once the ships are destroyed, Snipes will alert you that he rigged jamming and detonation devices in all of the ships. Since the detonators did not work perfectly, it is possible that the communications got through. Your acutal objective is to guard the Sunder, so that SOC can bring in a Sunder decoy and detonate it. The Sunder has SOC members on board.

Unfriendly Assistance
Soon after Snipes tells you that its possible the entire NTF armada will show up, two wings of NTF fighters will jump in to assist. Both wings are marked friendly. The wings mention that they recieved a partial transmission regarding a core reactor breach, but don't mention anything about you and Snipes. Snipes handles the communications, but alerts you that he has friends who will be arriving shortly. Once his friends arrive, both new wings will turn hostile. Destroy them quickly, with the help of the 99th Skulls. The Skulls-SOC's main battle fleet-are flying new Enyrnies class fighters.

On the Offensive
Your new objective will be to guard the Sunder and the Hamako, a ship which is jamming communications. Although Snipes mentions that it is essential that the Hamako survive, the Sunder will be the main target of the fighters, and once that is lost, the mission is over. Therefore, it is essential to protect the Sunder. Now some more waves of fighters and two crusiers will arive (one by one). Take them out, and make sure to protect the Sunder, as it is weak and defenseless.

Planting the Decoy
Soon the Naxos and the Sunder's decoy will jump in. The Naxos will help in taking out the crusier if it is still alive. Once the NTF threat is neutralized, the Naxos will capture the Sunder (with the help of the onboard SOC members). The Sunder will warp out, and the Sunder's decoy will detonate. Job well done, pilot. Return to base.

Actually, when it blows up, wait a few moments for the NTCv Sevrin to jump in... Snipes is gonna give him a good old yelling for his incompetence, resulting in his hanging (Poor guy). When the Sevrin has departed, you can leave.

*Sunder decoy: The decoy that was destroyed in an attempt to fool the NTF into believing it was the real sunder
Fighter squadron: 203rd Scorpions
Description: Help destroy the Santhanas

----
Background
Following Alpha's disarming of at least two of the Sathanas' main guns, the Sathanas entered Capella to be confronted by the GTVA Colossus. If the Sathanas still has at least one main turret operational after Bearbaiting, the Sathanas also decimated an allied fleet near the Capella node.

Walkthrough
(Can't chose weapon loadout or ship selection)
Default: GVB Bakha, 1 GTW Mekhu HL-7, 1 [GTW Akheton SDG]], 1 bank of GTM Helios, 1 bank of GTM Trebuchet

This can be the easiest mission in the whole game if you performed well in the previous mission. If not, you still have work to do because the Sathanas can take out the Colossus even with one beam turret operational. Fortunately, due to differences in timing, FPS, maneuvering, etc., the Colossus is usually safe once you're down to one turret. If the flak guns are still operational you may want to order your wingmen to take them out for you.

The Basilisks can be really annoying, but you can usually take several out with Trebuchets at long range before you engage the Sathanas. Fortunately, there are only eight of them, as opposed to the multitude in Bearbaiting, so when the second wave arrives, just order your wingmen to cover you. If you've gotten all four turrets, of course, feel free to take them out yourself to get credit for the extra kills.

You can ensure you get the kill for the Sathanas by making sure you inflict more damage on it than any of your wingmen. If your wingmen are busy with the Basilisks or if you've ordered them to depart, this should be pretty easy. After a 10 minute exchange of beam fire, the Sathanas throws in the sponge.

KR's Notes : This mission gives you buttwhooping 10K points if you manage to get the Sathanas kill. I found that for some reason, if you order your wingmen to ignore the sathanas, so will the Colossus... So don't do that... just tell them to engage enemy (C-3-9). Your gonna have to do alot of Shift-R to get the kill. I found that the best spot to kill it is the fighterbay... But for some reason, the fighter bay did some small explosion, as if it were disabled, and then the basilisks stopped popping... But couldn't complete objectives because of that... In any other case, just disable flaks and AAA turrets so they don't annoy you, and start camping at the subsystems aronund the ship. Oh , don't stay near the engines, the engine washes are gonna annoy you big time.
Fighter squadron: 64th Raptors
Description: The 64th attempts to cripple the NTF as they come through the

----
Background
Admiral Bosch sends his forces on a banzai charge to the Knossos subspace portal. The 3rd Terran fleet and 11th Vasudan Battle Group attempt to hold him off.
Walkthrough
This is also a bombing run mission. You have to destroy as many hostile capital ships as you can. The GTB Artemis with the primary bank of GTW Prometheus S, and all three banks of GTM Cyclops is the most ideal for this mission. The Artemis is the most maneuverable GTVA bomber you can use. It is also the lightest, but you have chance to survive only in the Artemis. A Vasudan GVD Typhon-class destroyer and several GTSG Mjolnir cannons are assisting you with their firepower.

Alternately, you can choose a fighter from another wing and let your allies run the bombing missions. With good instructions, the beam turrets, the typhon and your allied wings can destroy the NTF ships without difficulty. Hunt down fighters if you choose this path, and be sure to bring GTM Harpoons with you.
The first NTF ship that arrives in the NTD Uhuru (GTD Orion-class). You have to fire a few Cyclops at it to ensure its destruction. With the Uhuru, GTF Hercules fighters jump in and they head after the Mjolnir sentry guns. Your fighter assistance can handle them most of the times, but I suggest you move against the fighters after you delivered a dew bombs at the Uhuru. Losing the Mjolnir cannons or the Vasudan destroyer can mean as serious loss of firepower as you won't have the firepower to neutralize enemy warships which jump in. So head against the fighters, as well.

Order your squadron to attack the next series of warships which jump in. Since the Ai in Freespace are quite forgetting, you would better remind them they are not only there as spectators. Target one of the warships you consider the most serious threats, and hit C, 2, 1, 1. This orders your squadron to attack your target. You have to take down at least 50% of the incoming warships.

Damaging the engines of the warships immediatly gains you more time before they jump out. If you manage to disable one of the warships, it won't be able to escape at all. Acquiring quick lock on a moving target with Cyclops requires time, if you practice more, and understand the targeting engine of Freespace, you can gain advantage. Shoot, shoot, shoot, kill, kill, kill. These are the rules.

KR's Notes : Most people can't even kill the Uhuru before it jumps out... Because when it jumps in, it slides at a speed of over 150m/s, reaching it's waypoint faster than the other ships. The best way to take down this guy is to target it's engines as soon as it jumps in, lob a few cyclops and follow it. The Uhuru's jump in speed is so great that it actually reaches your start point.
At times, the ship selection will offer the Artemis D.H. Although this seems like a potential advantage, the weapon selection screen also does not offer bombs of any type. This will be the first major problem you will encounter, other minor problems you should have noticed by now: odd readouts for secondary weapons, no simulated voice in techroom. These problems are caused by having a player file which was used with FS2_Open 3.7 or older, and having upgraded to FS2_Open 3.9 or newer. Unfortunately, the only known fix is to either downgrade your FS_Open version or create a new pilot (yes, sadly, losing all progress). Of course, you could also attempt to complete the missions using the Rockeyes which replace the unavailable Cyclopses. Or you could switch to available Hornets and EMPs. Otherwise, you are pretty much sunk.

Please also note that retail has no reproducable problems of this kind.
Description: CEU of the GTM TAG-A

----
Background
The 134th is called to test the expirimental TAG system, which the GTVA hopes will give them an advantage against the Shivans. The GTCv Warspite provides fighter cover.
Walkthrough
This is the blunder of space simulator history of all time. You have to fly an GTF Ulysses with one GTW Subach HL-7 and one GTW Prometheus R. You also have a new kind of missile in your secondary bank. It is the GTM TAG-A missile, which is used to acquire target lock on hostile fighters so a nearby warship can open fire at it from a longer distance.

The first squadron of fighters you find are SF Basilisk fighters. They are not so hard to hit, but a squadron of SF Maras come next. These fighters are far more maneuverable and much smaller. TAG them all the way. Try to get as close to them as possible to severly increase your chance of hit. No certain advice can be given here, you have to be an accurate pilot to take down the Maras.

Next, the Warspite (GTCv Deimos-class) gets in trouble! The Shivans attack it, but since you are not properly armed to face those fighters directly, you have to TAG hostile bombers to let the corvette target them. It is worth to rearm even in the middle of dogfight, you have need for any TAG missile you can fire.
ACT 2, MISSION 2
Fighter squadron: 134th Barracudas

Fighter squadron: 70th Blue Lions
Description: The Blue Lions must defend the GTD Bastion as it makes its way to destroy the Epsilon Pegasi, Capella jumpnode.

----
Background
With the Bastion's protective taskforce almost completely destroyed, Allied Command orders the 70th to defend the Bastion as it makes its way to destroy the Epsilon Pegasi jump node to Capella.

Walkthrough
Moniter's recommendations: GTF Ares, Trebutchet, Harpoon, UD-8 Kayser

Standard procedure in this mission is to load up with an Ares or Herc II filled up with Trebuchet long range anti-bomber missiles, and with a long range primary bank to take out bombs, then park next to one of the Aeolus cruisers and blast bombers at long range. This is an effective and tried and true tactic. On higher difficulties however, the Shivan bombers, especially the Nephilim and Seraphim varieties take several duel Trebuchet hits dead on. For that reason, I prefer to fly intercept in an Erinyes with a Kayser and an HL-7.

KR's Notes : The shivan bombers will go after the cruisers first, so assign one protection wing for each cruiser if you want. Some of those cruisers come back in the last mission, if they survive. Also, DO NOT give loadout to Beta 2 & Beta 3. They will have a reactor core breach at the beggining of the mission, blowing up in the process.

Walkthrough
In this mission, you have to protect as many ships as possible (translation: huge dogefight). If you want to be dumb, you can sit inside the node until command says there is a supernova. If you want to be good like the rest of us, you just slug it out with the fighters. Of course, bombers always first.

For the ship (same as previous mission), I'd suggest the GTF Perseus. it fast enough to engage the enemy quickly, so you can escape to the node before the supernova without having to kill 30 fighters that WERE 4k away. For the weapons (also same as before), GTW UD-8 Kayser and GTM Trebuchet.

Mind though, that round about 15 minutes, you would be warned that the Capella star had gone supernovae. So, I recommend the following things. When it is about 13 minutes, start heading for the node. It is far away from you, and going there takes about 1 minute 30. Its ok if you die, you just get another cutscene.
I noticed there are some unscanned containers in the second wave. Just hit the "U" button when the second convoy arrives. There's hidden stuff like "Dravis' Diary" you can scan on those cargoes.

Description:
FS2 Tech Room Description
The SF Aeshma is a relatively rare, and only recently encountered, class of Shivan fighter. It appears to be a heavy attack fighter, like the Basilisk. With a low known top speed, Aeshmas seem to target slower-moving vessels, such as bombers, freighters, and gas miners. Their powerful lasers make them a danger to all such craft, so they must be engaged and destroyed as quickly as possible.

Developer Notes
None

Veteran Comments
Slower and less manuverable then the Basilisk it descends from, and also presenting a much larger top-bottom and side target profile, the Aeshma is pretty much cannon fodder in the face of GTVA fighter attack. It is well-armed cannon fodder, however, and going head-to-head with an Aeshma should be avoided, as those Shivan Mega Lasers can be somewhat painful. Outmanuvering the Aeshma should not present great problems for anything short of a Boanerges or Ursa.

Surprisingly, I find it WEAKER than the Basilisk.

Worst shivan ship in the game... I bet even Amazons' could dogfight this thing ... and win... In As lighning fall, these things seem to be the dumbest AI ever. They just sit around you and try to take an eye peek in your cockpit... Really. They just come around, get in front of you and look at you, firing an occassional, badly aimed shot.
Shortly afterwards, the asteroid splintered, revealing it's deadly cargo: the NTF Iceni, a unique vessel constructed to the plans of the traitorous Admiral Bosch within the asteroid. Obviously, this ship was not designed for combat. But it can do surprisingly excellent job at defending itself and supporting larger vessels in ship-to-ship fights.

I don't think so (Refering to the last comment). This ship has better weaponry than a triton, but blows up just as well as the triton. If a bomber sneezes on this thing, it's all over for the poor folks aboard. It's more of a flying lump more than anything, but if you make escort missions with these, it adds challenge and difficulty, just because it dies too easily...
The Isis transport is quite fast and maneuverable for a ship of its size. Most often it is used for personnel transfer, although occasionally they have been known to act as repair ships and tugboats. It is well protected with its turrets, and it is not unheard of for the PVN to use a wing of Isises to conduct an assault on a fortified position.

FS2 Tech Room Description
The GVT Isis is most often used as a military personnel transport but also occasionally serves as a repair ship or even a tugboat, helping to maneuver large vessels into docking bays. Two cannon turrets and thick molybdenum plating serve to protect its cargo. Magnetic cargo locks located on the Isis's undercarriage enable it to transport small cargo containers of supplies and munitions in emergencies.

FS1 Tech Room Description

Veteran Comments
I've always wondered how the tall Vasudans fit in this thing. Tactically it's good, very hard to hit with good turret defenses and it tends to fly around a lot when hit.

This ship can act very... strangely... I've seen it do some weird flips and maneuvers that are quite impressive for a lumpy flying junk... And it has a slim profile. Because of those facts, it can be a difficult target to hit, especially when it starts flippin
Almost nothing is known of the Rahu line of gas miners. It is assumed that they function in much the same way as our Zephyrus miners, funneling nebular gas into internal machinery that fractionates it into its molecular components for further processing. Rahu miners are armed with heavy laser turrets, so care must be taken when attacking them.
Attacking a Rahu should present you no great problems, though it is best done from the stern to avoid the turrets. Be well away from it as it explodes, because the Rahu's blast is no laughing matter, and at short range can shatter a lightly built fighter like a Serapis.

For some reason, this thing has extremely weak subsystems, especially the engines... a dozen of shots disables it... All you need to do is sit behind it's engines and hold your fire button... and then back off for the big boom
FS2 Tech Room Description
The GTFr Triton hauls almost twice the tonnage of the Poseidon-class freighters that have served the Alliance since the Great War. The ability to distribute supplies and munitions is vital in any theater of operations. With the Triton, battle groups can keep their forces well-equipped, even if dispersed over multiple systems. The Triton not only has the ability to dock with and haul TAC units, but it also has an internal cargo bay for ship-to-ship transfers. The GTVA expects the Triton to reduce its reliance on deep-space depots, which are vulnerable to attack and sabotage.
There is no doubt that this is the biggest allied freighter in the game. The cargo container it carries, the TC-TRI, is the size of a Nimitz class aircraft carrier. It can defend itself fairly well with a Standard Flak and a HL-7 turret.

However, compared to its size, the turrets do little good. There are simply too few of them to be even considered resistance to any fighter craft, let alone bomber.

It may have a flak cannon, but other than that, it really needs escort... Because this thing is extremely fragile... If you let 1 bomber wing get near it, it's history... Even a single fighter can take the triton down easily

KillerReaper: /* Veteran Comments */

The GTW ML-70 Morning Star is an unusual weapon, described as a long-range tactical weapon. The long-range aspect is undeniable: at 2km, it outranges ever other gun except the Maxim cannon, and even most missiles. Its high projectile speed and blistering rate of fire allow hits even at its maximum range.

The most interesting part of the Morning Star however, is its kinetic properties. When a target ship is hit by the weapon, it is shaken slightly; with repeated hits, the target can be driven completely off course and will tumble out of control. This can make them easy prey for a follow-up volley of GTM Harpoon or GTM Tornado missiles.

It also has other excelllent properties. Given its range and accuracy, as well as its rate of fire, it makes an ideal weapon to intercept bombers and their warheads. The weapon does high shield damage, but minimal hull damage, making it relatively "safe" to fire at outbound torpedoes even if your shots are being backstopped by a friendly target. It also works well as the opening weapon in a dogfight: if you start hitting your target at the weapon's maximum range, their shields should be badly drained by the time you close to range with other guns or missiles and chew up their armor.

Because the Morning Star does extremely minimal hull damage, it is not a good choice if your craft has only one weapon mount. Pilots should also be aware that this gun has fairly high energy requirements. If your ship has more than two firing cannons for one its mounts, the Morning Star should be mounted on the mount that has fewer firing points. Its already substantial advantages are not increased by firing more than two at once. In theory the Morning Star and Maxim gun perfectly complement eachother, but in practice the energy demand is simply too high to make this a viable tactic.

Tech Room Data
The GTW ML-70 Morning Star improves upon the performance of the Flail gun, which was developed during the Great War. The original Flail was too expensive to mass produce, because of its limited usage/effectiveness profile. Recent advances in high-temperature optics enable the main focusing chamber of the Morning Star to produce a much more coherent beam, increasing its range and damage levels. This comes at the expense of somewhat higher energy requirements, however.

Veteran Comments
The Morning Star is a totally tactical weapon, unlike the GTW Flail, which had a useful shield-damage value in addition to its knock-around capablities. Use it to push folks around, but beyond that, forget it exists.

Excellent bomb destroyer, due to the long range, high firing rate, and low energy requirements. It is also a good weapon (if you have good aim) for the mission where you have to fight off the Pegasus fighters, and is also good at knocking around bombers to prevent them from locking onto a ship.

I've never really favoured this weapon for my own use, however I sometimes find that it increases the effectiveness of AI fighter escorts in bombing missions
If you mount this thing on turrets, sentry guns, transports, cruisers and freighters, just TRY to get near them after... These things WILL juggle you, and you won't even be able to control yourself.
Firstly, the munition itself is very small, allowing most fighters to load at least one hundred of these rockets. Heavier craft can carry several hundred. Secondly, the recycle speed on the Tempest launcher is extreme. While other missile racks require a second or two to load a new volley, the Tempest can launch in a veritable hail.

Tactically, the Tempest fills two main roles. One, it is a good short-range tool to use against slower enemies like assault fighters, and bombers. These ships have thick armor and powerful shielding, but a hail of Tempest rockets can quickly shred even the heaviest protections. The weapon's second role is the use of surgical strikes against warships or lightly armored vessels like freighters.

Generally, the Tempest is best used in dual-fire mode at all times. Given the munition's disadvantage of low damage per rocket, and the advantage of having huge numbers of them to fire, using them twice as fast is not a disadvantage. A subtle benefit of the Tempest is that when you've used up your stock of rockets, a support ship can reload this type of ordnance very quickly.

Tech Room Data
The GTM MX-6 Tempest improves upon its predecessor, the Fury missile. Faster and more deadly than the GTM Fury, the Tempest is also smaller, enabling flight crews to load more into each Secondary weapon bay. The Tempest is a dumb fire missile, moving in a straight line from its point of release. The missile detonates when it strikes a solid object or when it reaches its effective range of approximately 600 meters. Tempests are best used at close range. With a velocity of 360 m/s, nothing outruns a Tempest.
Veteran Comments
I like to use the Tempest against fighters / bombers along with guns that move at approximately 450mps, like the GTW Subach HL-7 or GTW Circe, so that the lead aim is approximately the same. As your primaries create a hole in the targets shield, the rockets will go through and quickly tear up even tough targets like the GTB Ursa or the SF Basilisk. Against cruisers this weapon works equally well, a Myrmidon with GTW Subach HL-7s and Tempests can take down a GTC Fenris or a GTC Leviathan in seconds. This missile also works moderately well against large targets subsystems, if you find yourself without better tools for the job.

Unlike the old FS1 GTM Fury This thing can actually totally destroy shields and hulls, even on fighters... If you remember that mission where you first encounter the shivans in FS1, and the best missile that was to use is the fury, well, this thing would make things much, much easier, because this one can damage shields. This missile is good against cruiser-sized ships if you have a fighter with a big missile bay, like the GVF Tauret.
Tech Room Data
The GTW-83 Lamprey cannon is a second-generation Leech gun. It drains the energy systems of its target, depleting the reserves available to the target's Primary weapons, shields, and engines. Coupled with a weapon that pummels both hull and shields, the Lamprey is highly effective against enemy fighters and bombers.

Veteran Comments
Though I've tried this repeatedly in single player, it seems to have no effect. Perhaps in multiplayer it does, so try it there and tell me.

In multiplayer the Lampray loses out somwhat, although it functions as predicted, it doesn't prevent the target from fireing missiles. In many ways it's simpley more efficent to take duel GTW UD-8 Kayser, GTW Prometheus S, or GTW Subach HL-7 to the target and get done with it rather then fiddle around with such whimsy as the Lamprey. I'm sure that under some tactical situations this is an excellent weapon however.

This thing can be quite annoying if it is used against you... If you get constantly shot at by this thing, you won't even be able to shoot a single bullet, because your energy reserves are already drained within the first 3-5 shots... Not mentioning the shields going haywire. Very effective against stuff and people who rely alot on highly energy consumptive weaponry, such as a GTF Erinyes with Full Kaysers. Shoot him with this several times, and he's hopeless

The GTM-4a Tornado is the direct descendant of the GTM Hornet swarming missiles. Like that earlier design, the Tornado launcher fires four warheads per salvo. This newer weapon is much improved though in terms of speed and agility and stands a good chance of intercepting any craft. Its range was also enhanced, and will now reach out to about 1.5km.

Though the updated swarming missiles are a better weapon for dogfighting, this design does have two considerations to keep in mind. First, the Tornado is slightly larger than the Hornet, meaning fewer missiles can be loaded into an equivalent secondary bay. And second, due to the way the Tornado's guidance systems have been programmed, it will not arm its explosive if launched without a target; so you can't shoot 'from the hip' like you can with the Hornet.

Even given these two considerations, this is an excellent choice in a fast-moving fighter melee.

Tech Room Data
The GTM-4a Tornado is an upgrade to the Hornet missile. With improved fire control systems and guidance computers, the Tornado can be fired more rapidly and with greater accuracy than the Hornet. Though physically smaller than its predecessor, the Tornado launcher fires more rockets per volley, delivering a more devastating punch. Be advised that a Tornado missile will fail to arm its payload properly if aspect lock has not been achieved before firing.

Veteran Comments
The Tornado is FS2's wish-me-dead missile. Salvo a double volley of these at an enemy fighter and he will be in dire straights, if not blown to bits. Even most bombers will have a significant chunk of their hull lost. For one-salvo killing power the Tornado can only be beat by the Trebuchet. That power comes at the price of being able to carry relatively few volleys worth missiles, however. In extended missions you are probably going to better served by a bank of Harpoons, but for quick and dirty pure stopping power, the Tornado is where it's at.

The main problem with the Tornado is that you only get half the shots you do with the GTM Harpoon, so make every shot count. This weapon is excellent, capable of taking down light bombers like the GTB Zeus is one double-fire shot, and is almost as maneuverable as the GTM Harpoon.

Either choose this, the Trebuchet, or the Tempest as your second secondary rack if you're a superiority, intercept or heavy. The first secondary should always go to Harpoons.

These things don't shoot 1 at the time unlike the GTM Hornet, all 4 or 8 of them shoot all at the same time, wich makes the punch bigger comparatively to the hornet. The drawback of this, however, is that countermeasures work better against these compared to hornets... But countermeasures won't save you anyway, because if you get the right shot with this, it can pretty much outmaneuver anything, and own you as soon as you see them coming your way
FS2 MTS Model Description
The GTSG Alastor is the Alliance's most advanced sentry gun platform. Immobile once placed, Alastors can be dropped by warships to cover a retreat, or they can be positioned to strengthen defensive firepower around strategic locations. While Alastors alone cannot hold a position against more than a few fighters, complementing the sentry platforms with a warship and several wings of fighters has been shown to present an exemplary defense against all but the most determined of foes. Two Bessmer-Kohn cannon turrets on opposing sides of the platform give the Alastor a 360-degree field of fire. The turrets are independently controlled by the latest neuralnet cyber-AI to track and target multiple ships and warheads simultaneously. This targeting software has virtually eliminated the friendly fire incidents that used to happen all too frequently with the older Cerberus model sentry platforms.
