----renegade legion total conversion----

I think it would be quite a good idea to preserve the universe of the renegade legion (one of the most potent and rich sci-fi universes I actually had the pleasure of witnessing). Unfortunately, since the demise of FASA, all that's left of the renegade legion material is a bunch of old non updated web pages.

Provided a few MODs and tables, I believe the renegade legion will be a charming addition to the freespace 2 library of TCs. Furthermore, the FRED editor will ensure the "preservation" of the universe (with the help, no doubt, of the last scattered renegade fans).

The way I envision it, the story will take place just after the PC title "renegade: the battle for jacob's star" (the only space sim RL game evolving around characters and a plot) and could continue to the end of the war with the TOG. The presence of a misterious race called the hivers (which nothing is known of) might also give the "unknown threat spark" freespace addicts remember from the shivans.

In short, I think that once several ongoing projects have been completed, this will definately be worth it!

Flying Shotgun with the Shivan Defence Force
I haven't seen any campaign you play sa the Shivans on, and it would also shed light on the motives of the Shivans.
It might be a big mod because I'm sure the Shivans have all sorts of weapons, ships, etc that we haven't seen, and a modder would need to seriously flesh out the Shvan arsenal (would you take a shivan loadout screen seriously if it had Shivan Mega Laser on it?).

Lightspeed's Shivan weapons pack would cover that problem I think. Alternatively one might want to try and restart the Hidden Terror campaign currently languishing on Sectorgame.-ngtm1r

Reconquest of Earth
Description: Exploration parties have found a new way to Sol (through the Shivan nebula?). Unfortunately, the Terrans there are not willing to become part of the GTVA (reason to be established in campaign).<br>
The GTVA and Terranovan Confederation (or whatever else you want to call it) duke it out (possible multiplayer head-to-head campaign). Possibly, if the route is through part of the Shivan Nebula, have a three-power war between the GTVA, TNC, and Shivans.<br>

Modding: Do not make this campaign unless you like modding or you don't care about plot holes. To avoid plot holes, you need to either plagarise a lot of FS1 craft & weapons or do a lot of modding.<br>
Neccessary:<br>
Make an Orion with Shivan beam weapons (they got them by REing the Lucifer debris) (Terran beam weapons weren't invented until after Sol was cut off, so GTBWs on a TNC Orion would be a plot hole); if it gives them a serious advantage, make weaker versions, because leaving the Confederation's Orions without beams would give the GTVA a major advantage.<br>
Either Resurrect the Athena and Valkyrie at a minimum or make new fighters solely for Confederation Pilots; make the selection good enough for until the Confeds RE GTVA fighters.<br>
Do the same for a decent selection of guns and missiles (beam weapons can be copied from the Shivans).<br>
Optional:<br>
Make a new race called the Terranovans (Latin, literal: New Earth; figurative: New Chance).<br>
Give the Terranovans some sort of signature technology, eg a fighter with AWACS technology or support-ship capability, or give them some Shivan technology (eg better drives).<br>
Balancing:<br>
If you have a three-power war in the Shivan Nebula and the Shivans overpower the Confeds easily on easy or very easy, either ask yourself whether you need the Shivans to have as much firepower, or give the Confederation a shield-penetrator (my conception of the campaign was that the Shivans still attacked Earth evenn after the Lucifer was destroyed and the Terranovans are angry no effort was seemingly made to protect them; they developed the shield-penetrator as an anti-Shivan weapon); if this doesn't help, rethink the mission(s) in question; if the GTVA is almost as badly outmatched, have them RE the penetrator.<br>

"what happened to bosch" campaigns?
I think it would be interesting to expand on the bosch mystery: I know only of one campaign: technical superiority (unfortunately aborted) who tried to cover the problem, and it left me longing for more. ===FS2 Tech Room Description===
The SSG Belial sentry gun platform appears to be a radical redesign of the Trident platform that was first encountered during the Great War. Pilots who have encountered both report that the Belial is harder to kill. It is reliably known that the Belial has twice as many laser turrets as the Trident sentry gun. Both types are used to guard storage depots, gas miners, and other Shivan installations.
Belial is an evil being in Jewish apocrypha. His name means "worthless" in Hebrew.
Belial is supposedly the father of lucifer, and also the one who gode him into evil and into fighting the war of heaven.

This class is probably the most powerful Shivan capital vessel, second only to the SJ Sathanas and maybe the SD Lucifer. In possesion of 4 forward-facing beam cannons, it can rip through the hull of a GTD Hecate or an Orion-class destroyer in under a minute, and take out smaller vessels within seconds. Its anti-capital ship weaponry make it a threat to any vessel, even one the size of the GTVA Colossus.

But the anti-capital beams come at a price. The Ravana-class is more vulnerable to fighter and bomber attacks than its brother, the Demon-class. Still, it would take a large number of squadrons to take out such a target.
Since most destroyers have their main beams facing forward and the odd ligher beam mounted aft (in the Hecate's case, two), it can dish out enough firepower to level the destroyer, and only take moderate damage. but this is only the case when the Hecate is alone. Roughly two wings of fighters, of any class, can knock out any anti-cap beam the Ravana wields & keep fighter cover on a friendly vessel.

Background
The SD Lucifer was a massive superdestroyer that led the Shivan incursion during The Great War. Armed with what would be termed today as 'beam cannons', the Lucifer possessed enough firepower to destroy capital ships and bombard planetary targets with ease. The vessel was rendered invulnerable to Terran and Vasudan weapons through the employment of an advanced shielding system. Unable to be stopped, the Lucifer lay waste to entire worlds, including Vasuda Prime.

In the ending phase of The Great War, Vasudan scientists fleeing their homeworld's destruction discovered Ancient artifacts on a planet in the Altair system. The information enclosed in the artifacts described the technology necessary to track vessels in subspace, something that neither Terrans or Vasudans had been able to do before. Coupled with the knowledge that shields did not function in subspace, a desperate plan was formulated to stop the Lucifer before the superdestroyer destroyed Sol.

Launching from the GTD Bastion, a small number of fighter and bomber wings followed the Lucifer into subspace as the destroyer made the jump from Delta Serpentis to Sol. The gamble succeeded, destroying the Lucifer and saving Sol. Unfortunately, the destruction of the Lucifer within the subspace corridor had the unintended side effect of collapsing the subspace corridor from Sol to Delta Serpentis, cutting off the heart of the Galactic Terran Alliance from the rest of the universe. However, the victory over the Lucifer effectively ended the Shivan incursion and Terran and Vasudan forces quickly evicted the remaining Shivan forces from their territories.

Description:
FS1 Tech Room Description
The Lucifer is the greatest threat to the survival of the GTA, the PVN, and both the Terran and Vasudan species. It wields three massive Flux Cannons which can destroy one of our capital ships in a few hits. These same cannons have been seen bombarding colonized worlds. With four full fighter squadrons, and a massive array of defensive turrets, the Lucifer would be extremely difficult to destroy.<br><br>
The fact that it is protected by a sheath shielding system which makes it completely impervious to any kind of kinetic or plasma damage makes it impossible to destroy. We have yet to find a way to breach this shielding technology. It is hoped that a solution will be found soon.
Assuming that a solution is found, we have managed to gather enough data on the Lucifer to destroy it. In a recon mission, we were able to determine that the Lucifer is powered by five reactors across its surface. If these reactors are destroyed in a short amount of time, the Lucifer will be stopped.<br><br>
If we cannot stop the Lucifer, we do not expect to be able to defeat the Shivans.<br><br>
We have no way of knowing if there are more than one Lucifer-class destroyer. However, any that exist should be considered more dangerous than a Class A threat.

FS2 Tech Room Description
The SD Lucifer was a massive superdestroyer that led the Shivan armada in the Great War. No weapon in the allied arsenal could penetrate the Lucifer's shields. In the Altair system, Vasudan scientists uncovered ancient artifacts that explained how to track ships into subspace, where the Lucifer's shields would not function. A desperate mission to attack the Lucifer in subspace succeeded. But the explosion of the Lucifer collapsed the Sol jump node, severing all contact with Earth. The victory over the Lucifer effectively ended the Shivan invasion.

Lucifer Sightings and Fleet Movements during the Great War
The Lucifer's first known sighting was in the Ross 128 system, the prelude to the Great War with the Shivans (FS1 Intro).

The Lucifer did not reemerge until 2/11/35, when it suddenly appeared in the Ribos system, destroying the Tombaugh Installation and all its defences. Terran Command believed that it had tracked the captured Shivan Cruiser, the Taranis, through subspace to the Tombaugh Installation (CB sm2-01a.fsm and CB sm2-05a.fsm).

By 2/20/35, the Shivans had completely bypassed the Terran blockades in Antares and Beta Aquilae, proceeding immediately to Deneb through Vega (CB sm2-07a.fsm). Terran Command believed that the Lucifer would attack Vasuda through Antares, while the Eva, a Shivan Demon-class destroyer, would attack through Deneb.

However, on 2/31/35 the Lucifer was seen jumping into Deneb system from the Deneb-Vega jump node with the SD Eva taking the lead(sm2-08a.fsm and its debriefing, mission briefing sm2-09a.fsm). It is unknown whether the Lucifer jumped to Vega directly from Ribos, or through Antares (the Eva entered Vega through the Antares-Vega jumpnode).

In retaliation for the destruction of the SD Eva, the Lucifer directly confronted and destroyed the GTD Galatea (at 1900hrs 2/31/35; sm2-10a.fsm and its debriefing, CB sm3-01a.fsm).

Shortly afterwards, the Lucifer made the jump to Vasuda through the Deneb-Vasuda jumpnode (CB sm3-01a.fsm). Once in Vasuda, 2/31/25-3/01/35, the Lucifer Fleet bombarded Vasuda Prime from orbit for 13 consecutive hours, rendering the planet uninhabitable. The 'Lucifer fleet rapidly redeployed, now searching for the Terran homeworld.

On 3/01/35-3/02/35, the Lucifer jumped to Beta Aquilae, destroying the Beta Aquilae Installation, but left the PVD Hope and the Beta Aquilae Communications Terminal intact (mission briefing sm3-03a.fsm, CB sm3-04a.fsm).

The Lucifer was not encountered until 3/02/35, when it jumped next to the Deneb-Altair jumpnode, deploying fighter wings to attack transports carrying scientists to the Altair system (sm3-05a.fsm and its debriefing).

By 3/29/35, after determining the location of the Sol system, the Lucifer was reported to be in the Sirius system to make the jump to Delta Serpentis (CB sm3-07a.fsm). GTA Command ordered the GTD Bastion to intercept and destroy the Lucifer before it could reach Sol. Admiral Shima quickly drew up plans to intercept the Lucifer at the Sirius-Delta Serpentis jumpnode. However by the time the Bastion arrived in range of the jumpnode, the Lucifer had already departed the system. Admiral Shima estimated that the Lucifer would reach Earth in 40 hours (Debriefing 4: sm3-07a.fsm).

On the GTD Bastion's final approach to the Delta Serpentis-Sol jumpnode, the Lucifer was on the brink of jumping to Sol (sm3-08a.fsm). The Bastion scrambled its fighters and a wing of Ursa Bombers to pursue the Lucifer into subspace. While inside the subspace corridor, the Ursa bombers managed to destroy all five of the Lucifer's reactors, resulting in the Lucifer's destruction (sm3-09a.fsm).

Inconsistency
In the Command Briefing of sm2-08a.fsm (2/31/35), Admiral Wolf indicates that Alpha 1 had investigated the Lucifer in Antares: "We have now entered the Deneb system. After your investigation of the Lucifer at Antares, Terran Command has deduced that the Shivans will be attempting a multiple pronged attack on Vasuda Prime coming from Deneb and Antares." However, Alpha 1 does not see the Lucifer in Antares, nor does Alpha 1 play a mission "investigating" the Lucifer in Antares. It may be that the mission designer incorrectly meant Alpha 1's investigation of the Eva in Antares near the Antares-Vega Jump Node (which jumped out shortly after its arrival; sm2-06a.fsm).

While the SD Lucifer was well-designed for FS1, it did not participate very much in the actual missions. This obviously resulted in the ship's weapons being unbalanced. For FreeSpace 2, she can be equiped with two frontier beam weapons, making the Lucifer-class a worthier adversary to any capital ship than she was in FreeSpace.}}
Name origin
The name "Lucifer" is of Latin origin. It's composed by the name lux, which means light, and the verb ferre, which has many meanings(in this case bringing and bearing fit well). The meaning of the name would be "Bringer/Bearer of Light".

Lucifer is a fallen angel who was cast out of heaven after losing The War of Heaven. Lucifer is said to be the enemy of God, and the embodiment of evil.

Lucifer is also depicted sometimes as being the judge of the Inferno, answering to Satan himself. It is said that the demonic persona Belial was his father. It's highly probable that Dante Alighieri's vision of Lucifer affected the popular vision, too. Dante represented it as a monster with three heads devouring the traitors Judas, Brutus and Cassius.

Lucifer was also one of the names given to the planet venus, when it was thought to be a star. Other given names depending on it's position were hesperos and phosphoros and, of course, the shepherd's star.

<b>Fighter squadron:</b> <br>
<b>Description:</b>

----
Background
:The PVD Hope is leaving the Antares system after an intense battle. It has sustained moderate damage and will be jumping to the Beta Aquilae system.
:We are sending two wings to help cover the Hope while it is being repaired. The Vasudans are sending their own fighters to stand guard over the Hope, but it will be some time before they arrive.
:The Hope should be in the system when you arrive. We do not believe the Shivans have enough forces in the system to mount a serious attack, but their strategies are difficult to predict.
Walkthrough
Don't be fooled by the number of directives in this mission, this is a relatively tough one. The strategy is very simple though. Focus on the Nephilim or Shaitan bombers. This is your number one priority. The Hope will jump in pretty soon after you jump in. It will be at 36% hull integrity. Three Nephilim bombers will jump in at nearly the same time as the Hope. After just a short time five more Nephilim bombers will jump in to entertain you. Two more will attack once the rest are down. Time for a change in pace.<br>

The Isis Repair should have arrived by now. One single Dragon will jump in, shortly followed by two Shaitans accompanied by two Manticores attacking the Hope. Soon the Cain class Lightning will arrive. You will be suprised how quickly it goes down if you order everyone to attack it. Then the Cain class Thunder will jump in with two Manticores as escort. After a short while the Mecross will arrive to aid you. A wing of three Dragon class fighters will attack after this. Two rounds of four Nephilim and two Scorpions will finally test you. The Vasudan reinforcements should arrive after this and you should be alright.<br>

That was a little intense, wasn't it?

Notes
Don't hang around waiting for the Hope to be fully repaired. She won't. Further, if you're in luck, you can see the Isis Repair appearing at the opposite side of the Hope and you'll have the pleasure of watching the reefer crazed Isis pilot commit suicide against the hull of the Hope. It'll take a long time, but with serious time compression and strong drink, this can be fun to watch.
Of the same technological generation as the Boanerges class, the Artemis is less heavily armed and carries a lighter weapon payload, but it is significantly more maneuverable. While the Boanerges can inflict more damage, the Artemis can undertake (and return from) missions the slower Boanerges would have no hope of surviving. All Artemis-class bombers in the GVTA fleet are currently serving with the 2nd and 3rd Battle Groups.

While not the most potent dogfighter, its primary weapons placement mean you can hit a target that is veering out of your sight, or you can compensate by aiming slightly to the left or right of your intended target. I personally love the Artemis for its maneuverability and top speed. Firing your Cyclops at full burners with this means the bombs will almost definitely hit, as they're travelling too fast to be hit. A true strike bomber, in every sense of the word.}}
The GTF Ares is a heavy fighter class during the Second Shivan Incursion. It is an upgraded version of the GTF Hercules Mark II with more missiles and thicker armoring. The Ares's production was limited because of its high specifications and maintenance cost.

Description:
FS2 Tech Room Description
The GTF Ares class of fighters is a radical upgrade of the Hercules II fighter. The power plant has been completely replaced with the newer, more powerful Nankam NA-27f model. Depleted uranium shielding has been added atop critical subsystems, making the Ares harder to incapacitate. Two primary weapon banks have been added, for greater firepower than the Herc II. This greater punch and protection come at a cost, however, as the Ares handles like a potato.

The Ares is for those times when you just want to sit back and lob missiles at people. It also makes a decent bomber substitute against heavily defended convoys of transports and cruisers. Standard usage of an Ares defensively is to load up with GTM Trebuchets, park next to what you're defending, and blow people away with paired hits at maximum range. Never try to dogfight; it is an exercise in futility.

This fighter is ideal for those who need firepower instead of maneuverability and speed. It can be armed with more missiles and is much tougher than the GTF Hercules Mark II. In fact, this fighter is tough enough to survive a glancing hit from the main beam of a Fenris at lower difficulties. Being a heavy attack fighter, it is vulnerable against faster-moving fighters. The Ares needs fighter escorts otherwise they are easily destroyed by more agile opponents.

The Ares is compatible with a wide range of weapons, including the most destructive GTW Maxim and GTW UD-8 Kayser.

Don't choose this one for the final missions. You almost always never make it to the node, and the sluggishness is just too much. You're constantly rearming with Trebutchets... no fun. :(

This fighter is essentially tailor-made for the final missions of the main FS2 Campaign, where large numbers of bomber waves predominate, as these missions are more-or less written for the player to respond to nearly everything with massed GTM Trebuchet fire and finish off the crippled survivors with GTW UD-8 Kaysers. In most respects however the Ares is actually more a light bomber than a fighter.

Excellent against Bombers (especially Seraphim and Nephilim) and Cruisers, but never, NEVER dogfight with this 'Fighter'. The Ares handles like a log of wood and can easily be outmaneuvered by any real fighter.

This fighter feels like a Herc MKI, in fact, it is a Herc MKI with better shields and armor. If you liked the Herc MKI but hated the Herc MKII, you will love this fighter.

There is something special about this fighter, first of all, its .pof file is called Bonus... second of all, You only get it if you complete the Into the Lion's Den SOC Mission (which probably everyone has done).

You can defend a ship against almost unlimited numbers of bombers in this ship. Hit B, lock on, fire Trebuchets, hit B again, lock on, fire, repeat until everybody dies. Forget interceptors, this is a bomber's worst nightmare.

Although it handles like a log, the sheer shielding, armor and firepower more than make up for it. This ship is death incarnate in the right hands - nothing can stand before you. Six GTW UD-8 Kaysers will turn any enemy into space dust. If you're not a good shot and have trouble with faster fighters, it's generous secondary capacity will solve the problem. Either way, the best fighter in-game for me.

Though I'm not overly fond of the Ares for my own use, it is a brilliant ship to give a CPU controlled wing. Set them up with Maxim guns and Kaysers, and give them lots of Tornadoes, then point them at cruisers and corvettes. They'll survive longer than almost any other fighter in that situation, and longer than most bombers, since they aren't quite so vulnerable to enemy fighters.

Its role is hard to describe. It has a massive amount of armour and shielding, and yet without the total lack of mobility that the Ursa displays, nor the bombs that the latter has. I guess its more of a super heavy assault fighter, because it is capable of engaging fighters better than many bombers, while being able to take on the heaviest ships.

On the easiest difficulty level, three such fighters can defend two Argoes, a Hippocrates and a Triton from over thirty Nahemas, twenty Maras and a Cain with few problems. With a little help from a GVCv Sobek, they could even take out a damaged Moloch-class corvette! That's how powerful the Ares is. It is true that the Ares lacks maneuverability and speed, but its shielding, armor and firepower compensates these drawbacks very well. Once I got my hands on the Ares in the main campaign, I kept using it, even in the last mission.}}
The GTF Pegasus was one of the most advanced starfighters in the GTVA Navy. It was specifically designed for reconnaissance and stealth missions. This class of fighter is the hardest to hit of all Terran fighters, the fastest, but the most vulnerable. Its Vasudan appropriate is the GVF Ptah.

Description:
FS2 Tech Room Description
The Pegasus is used almost exclusively for reconnaissance missions. It's the fastest, most maneuverable ship in the Terran arsenal. The craft's contours and hull materials were carefully designed to minimize its profile to detection sensors. It is woefully armored and packs only minimal weaponry, making it a death box in a firefight. Pegasus pilots are a special breed of daredevils who pride themselves on getting into and out of situations that would be the death of other pilots, all without firing a shot.
Pegasus - a stealth fighter. It's available only in Endgame, so most players won't fly it.

Besides that, it's a very nice fighter to pilot. It has only one gun mount, and a small secondary bank, but it's advantages are more than outweigh this. It's very maneuverable, so flying it is a dream, and it's invisible to radars. That means nobody can target you (unless there's enemy AWACS nearby), warheads immidiately loose lock on you, while enemy fighters and capship's turrets can only shoot at you if they see you. But even this isn't easy, because it's color and shape make it hard to see at distances beyond 500 metres.

Ideal reconnessance fighter, if used properly can be a really lethal weapon. Just imagine a wing of Pegasus, TAGing everything in sight, while remaining undetected...

Quite a fighter, but it is rather disconcertingly fragile. The incredibly small profile helps counter this somewhat, as well as the stealth ability. In addition, the colour scheme makes it difficult to see in space or in nebular environments, unlike the Ptah. It possesses superb maneuverability and a high speed, but has only one primary weapons bank and a small solitary secondary rack, meaning that it cannot accomplish anything beyond what you equip it for. In those few missions where you get to use it, try it out. But I'd say that other craft would do it more efficiently.

The Pegasus, while amazing for it's small target profile, speed, and almost complete radar invisibility, isn't really that impressive against skilled pilots. When pitted up against a group of these for training, a decent pilot in a Herc2 can call a beat on at least one of these at a time, even hitting it with dumbfire missles. Granted though, the maneuverability is great, and it is fun to fly, in almost all situations, something with more armor and weapons will probably fit the bill better.

When I first saw the tech description for the Pegasus, I got turned off completely. Who in their right mind would fly this? I held that point of view until I tried flying it for myself. Only then did I regret that the FreeSpace 2 team never made more missions involving this fighter. This has become one of my favourite fighters in the game because of its speed and agility. It may have a thin hull, small secondary bank and only two gun banks, but there are always enough Subachs and Tempests to pass around and the agility of this fighter is quite a boon to circumvent thin shields and hull. Indeed, this fighter also forced me to use these two weapons if I wanted to evade or speed up resupplying on the battlefield. Ever since, I've started using these weapons more efficiently and frequently than I did before I came across this plate of metal. My only word of warning is this: don't attempt to attack anything beyond bomber-class in this, otherwise you'll end up dead...like one of my wingmen who tried to take down a Deimos-class corvette in this.}}

The GTCv Deimos was a common ship in 2, in the hands of both the GTVA and the NTF. Faster and more maneuverable than destroyers, but with more firepower than cruisers, these ships, along with the GVCv Sobek filled a much needed role in between these two classes. Their armor is made from collapsed-core molybdenum, which giving protection against beam fire, and allowing it around 80% of the hull strength of the much larger Orion and Hecate destroyers. Their reactors are highly efficient Vasudan models, which give them the power output required to maintain their many beams and other turrets.

Two Deimos-class corvettes (The GTCv Actium and the GTCv Lysander), along with 2 wings of fighters, were the first GTVA vessels to officially come into contact with a Ravana-class vessel. The Lysander was destroyed by a beam from this ship before anyone even knew it was out there.

On the Retail FreeSpace 2 box, the Deimos is shown with several side-mounted multi-part turrets, which are not possible in the Retail version. Some older versions of the Source Code Project used to support these turrets, but were removed on the basis that they caused problems. Hence the current revised model of the Deimos does not include these. See: Feature Requests
FS2 Tech Room Description
Deimos-class corvettes, such as the GTCv Actium and the GTCv Lysander, are the newest addition to the Terran fleet. These sleek, ultra-modern warships are the products of a new era of ship design, maximizing maneuverability and firepower. Their hulls are strengthened with collapsed-core molybdenum sheathing for better protection against beam fire, and their Vasudan-designed reactor core provides more energy per ton than any other allied ship class. As the Leviathan and Fenris cruisers of the Great War are gradually phased out, these corvettes will become the foundation of tomorrow's fleet.
Realistically, while the Deimos is nice, its four heavy beams are the inaccurate slashing type which makes the statement that it's as powerful as a destroyer kinda... debatable. It's probably accurate to say though, that its anti-ship capabilities are better than the other corvettes. Its anti-figher defenses are formidable if approached without caution, but entirely useless if one approaches from the correct angle (from the front or above).

Think of the Deimos as a bigger, meaner version of the Aeolus. Your best approach is from dead ahead, even though that risks getting hit by an errant slash shot and being instantly vaporized. Side approaches must deal with an AAA beam, flak gun, bomblets from the side-mounted Piranha launcher, two Terran Light Turrets, and possibly some number of Terran Heavy Turrets. A stern approach borders on suicide, with two AAA beams, two flak guns, and bomblets from both Piranha launchers.

Although the Deimos lacks the raw firepower of Orions or Hecates, it is far more balanced in weaponry. The Orion, for instance, can be destroyed by a Medusa, and a Hecate by a Lilith, whereas a Deimos can wipe out wing after wing of bombers, then challenge cruisers and other corvettes. In a not very recent poll it was found that 41 of 62 people (66.1%) thought that, of all the corvettes in FreeSpace 2, this was the most effective, ahead of the Sobek.

Probably the most dangerous capital ship to attack in a fighter or a bomber, and its 4 smaller anti-warship beams compared to the Sobek's 2 larger VSlash beams means Deimos can take more damage than the Vasudan corvette while remaining effective.}}
The SF Astaroth was a Shivan fighter spotted right after the Shivans' resurface in 2367. The Astaroth was regarded as a poor fighter despite its speed and maneuverability.

Description
FS2 Demo Tech Room Description
We believe that the Astaroth is a Shivan Harpoon. It has a very high top speed, and its maneuverability is quite good. However, its shield system isn't strong enough to withstand constant fighting for long, which leads us to believe the Astaroth's primary purpose is to destroy enemy bombers.
The Astaroth ranks as a Class B threat.

FS2 Tech Room Description
First encountered in Gamma Draconis, the SF Astaroth is a fast, agile fighter that appears to have achieved its maneuverability at the expense of its armor and weaponry. Once the shields of an Astaroth are down, the fighter can be dispatched quickly.
It has a ridiculously small target profile, the smallest of any ship in any Freespace game, and is fast and highly manuverable, making it annoyingly difficult to deal with via primaries. While the SF Astaroth is very fast and maneuverable, its shielding and armor cannot stand much punishment and it simply lacks adequate weaponry. The Astaroth kind of reminds me of the Imperial TIE series of fighters in Star Wars, only with shields and missiles.

The Astaroth has less manoueverability than a Dragon, meaning that it won't run circles around you. And despite the small target profile, it is easier to hit, especially if you approach from the rear where you can tear them up. Also quite weak against Harpoons: if the Astaroth's shields are softened up sufficiently, a single Harpoon will punch through this ship like a hot knife through butter, even if it had 100% hull.
While far more rare than its counterpart, the Cain-class cruiser, the Lilith is one of the most ferocious cruisers we have had the misfortune of combating. It has extremely strong weapon systems, as well as a very thick armor which our cannons can barely penetrate. One for one, the Lilith can easily destroy any of our cruisers. It is for this reason that they should be considered a primary target for all bomber squadrons in the GTA.<br><br>
The Lilith should be considered a Class A threat to any ships that encounter it.

The SC Lilith class of Shivan cruisers is a far-deadlier foe than the Cain class. Nearly impenetrable armor plating enables it to withstand tremendous punishment, enabling its nine turrets to lash out at warships and combat spacecraft with impunity.
{{comment|The Lilith is, in FS2, probably the single most effective cruiser in the game. It gains this title simply because it is ridiculously difficult to destroy. This cruiser can survive a dual Helios hit! This thick armor also makes it very difficult knock out critical subsystems and weapons, while its main beam cannon is a destroyer-scale LRed, giving it a nasty punch. Despite its durablity, its antifighter defenses are only marginally superior to the Cain, with its Shivan Cluster launchers instead of Fighterkiller missiles.

Ridiculously well armed and protected, but extremely badly armed for combating fighters. Interesting how the Moloch can mount 3 SReds, the same as the Rakshasa, but this can mount one sodding huge LRed despite being smaller than the Moloch and only slightly bigger in total size than the Rakhasa.

If this ship comes out during an escort mission, be sure to have at least 3 Trebuchets and use them to destroy that LRed Beam before they tear your escort to shreds.

The Cain and the Lilith. What really lets every Cain and Lilith down is that they have absolutely no rear protection at all! That SAAA can hit every in front of, below and to the sides, but it can't strike any enemy fighter or bomber at six O' clock or above! What's worse is that this very turret is best taken out from the rear, where it's visible for all to see. Just blow it up with a volley of Tempests, and the cruiser's a goner.

The real pain for me was always the Shivan clusters, which give devastating all-around protection. They're recessed in little hexagons on the sides and are hard to hit. An individual cruiser is always an easy target, but they're usually found in groups- which means cluster missile hell in this case.}}
Name origin
In Hebrew mythology, Lilith was a female Mesopotanian demon associated with spreading illnesses and diseases.

Lilith is referred sometimes to the demonic aspects of the female sex: Supposedly, when eva bit into the apple in god's garden and corrupted adam, she took the aspect of lilith (which is why she is sometimes identified as the "first wife" of adam). It is said that lilith's offspring formed the incubii and succubii, demonic destructive personas incarnating sin of the male (incubii) and female (succubii) sexes.

Weaker in terms of hull strength, and MUCH weaker in terms of turret strength then the Demon, the Ravana pays for its attack-oriented design with weak defenses. Indeed, fighters and bombers can range over the front three-quarters of Ravana's upper surfaces with near-impunity, and the lower-spine-mounted SAAA beam is placed too far back to defend the Ravana's main guns. It has a flak turret and another SAAA for anyone who comes up behind it, however. A capital ship behind a Ravana, on the other hand, is the Shivan destroyer's death sentence, as its engine subsystems are not strong and cover nearly the whole rear surface of the destroyer. When deployed in a strategic position, or jumping in behind another destroyer, this beast will be your worst nightmare. Just keep an eye on its beam cannons & you should get out all right. As stated before, the Ravana is no Demon, so it can't take as much punishment.
Veteran Comments
{{comment|Moloch is a poor excuse for a Shivan vessel and an even poorer excuse for a corvette. A Lilith poses more threat to allied forces than this big target. Its only saving grace is its ability to carry fighters, but it's never enough to turn the tide of battle.

The Moloch is an opponent to be taken seriously, despite all the negative commentary, and the statement a Deimos can take one on successfully is somewhat debateable. Shivans use much more effective (and faster-cycling) direct-fire beams, of which the Moloch has three SRed-types. Like most Shivan capital craft, its antifighter defenses are rather less impressive then those of a comparable Terran ship. Despite this the Moloch's defenses are nonetheless probably the best, pound for pound, of any Shivan capital craft. It mounts a considerable number of flak guns, and they are well-posistioned. The broadside flaks are placed in such a way as to make them difficult to target at range, but still provide good coverage to the sides of the ship. Eliminating them requires getting in dangerously close. The aft flak is more vunerable, but is also a heavy mount and still capable of inflicting significant damage. The Moloch is a dangerous opponent to an unwary fightercraft. Fortunately, there are no anti-fighter beams.

The fighterbay is never used in the Freespace 2 campaign. The Moloch has by far the worst firepower and anti-fighter defenses of any corvette, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a niche. The Moloch is a cruiser hunter, easily capable of destroying one of the best cruisers in the game, the Aeolus, which the Moloch survives without suffering any real damage. However, when faced with a cruiser and a wing of heavy assault fighters, as in the demo mission Crisis in Capella the Moloch is in deep trouble, provided the fighters can destroy its main beam turrets quickly enough (they can). Under few circumstances will a Moloch prevail over a GTCv Deimos, unless the Moloch launches bombers, the Deimos's many flak guns and AAA turrets add to its total firepower, and although the SReds are definitely more accurate, the TerSlash does 2.2 times the maximum sustained damage, and the Deimos has four, as opposed to the Moloch's three. However, if the Moloch is a good distance away, its accurate SReds will be more effective than the TerSlash beams of the Deimos. Still, in a poll, it was found few people actually consider the Moloch superior to the Deimos.

I don't wanna insult anyone, but everybody who says this ship isn't dangerous has never fought it! :) The plating of its turrets is more than poor in comparison to the over corvettes, yes. But:
Firstly: Its anti-fighter missiles can hit yout everywhere. At a Sobek, I can hide beneath the rear side and it won't hit me if I just take out one single flak gun.
Secondly: The convoluted design of the Moloch makes it much more difficult to disarm than a Sobek for example. At the Sobek I can park two klicks above and eliminate almost all of its turrets, including the main beam cannons. At the Moloch the antifighter and beam cannons are evenly spread all over the ship.
My conclusion: Maybe not as good as the Deimos, but definitely better than the Sobek - which is already deadly!
Do not underestimate the Moloch, just because of the distorted image the main campaign gives of it. They also misused the Aeolus!

Not as good as the Sobek. It really isn't. No anti-fighter beams on this thing. But its still troublesome to attack due to the sheer number of missiles it can shoot out. The SReds are a little underpowered in comparison to its size, but it is still capable of taking out cruisers and other corvettes.

The Moloch has a blind spot if you position yourself directly in front of it with a slight elevation. Here, the only weapon that can hit you is a single blob turret which is easily taken out, leaving you safe to lob off bombs with no fear of flak or AAA beams.

Another thing to note is that it doesn't have any AAA to begin with.
Moloch is a form of the ancient carthagian god baal, named moloch-baal. This god was depicted as a winged taurus with a fire breathing mouth in which men were thrown in to be sacrificed. The bible then demonised moloch baal: Possibly the golden taurus the hebrews were worshipping when moses came down from the sinai mount was referred to this deity.

Description:
FS1 Tech Room Description
The Basilisk seems to be a Shivan heavy attack fighter. It is not as maneuverable as other Shivan fighters, but it packs quite a punch, and it is very resistant to our weaponry. Most often they have been used in attacking our supply convoys and transports.<br><br>
Treat the Basilisk as a Class C threat.

FS2 Tech Room Description
The SF Basilisk is a Shivan heavy attack fighter. Slow but heavily armed and well-protected, the Basilisk targets slower-moving vessels, such as bombers, freighters, and gas miners. Their powerful lasers make them a danger to all such craft, so they must be engaged and destroyed as quickly as possible.
Name origin
In European legends, a basilisk is a reptilian beast that can cause death by a single glance. it is referred to as the snake king and represented the royal power in the babylonian traditions. The basilisk was demonised by the bible, making it an unholy beast.
{{comment|<i>When escorting craft smaller than a cruiser, priority should go to destroying attacking Basilisks before smaller Shivan fighters. If allowed to reach their target, a wing of Basilisks will make one's escort list shorter very quickly.

However, the Basilisk is both slow and ungainly. Between its lack of manueverability and an afterburner that the AI seems to never use, the Basilisk resembles a heavily shielded target drone (that you should nevertheless refrain from going head-to-head with).

The Basilisk is infact, the most heavily shielded fighter in FreeSpace 1, that really doesn't matter, however, as you can practically destroy it with an ML-16 or Training Laser, because of its horrible maneuverability and large target profile.

Skewer it with the Banshee. It may have thick shields, but the hull strength is extremely low. For escort missions, you should destroy these as a priority second only to Bombers, since their Hornet-style missiles can heavily damage targets.

Ridiculously slow, weakly armored. More of a distraction then an actual threat.

Despite that they are very slow, they ARE heavily shielded, more so in fact than any other fighter in the game. Once you punch through their shields, however, they're toast since their underlying hull is paper-thin. However, they are not to be ignored if you are protecting a transport, freighter or even light cruiser. It also has a smaller rotation time than the Tauret or indeed the Myrmidon.

Thankfully, one of the most common fighters you will find in-game. Don't bother using missiles on it unless you need to kill it in a pinch. But don't underestimate it. They are quite capable of ruining transports, freighters, and even cruisers.}}
