The extensively used SF Mara was one of the Shivan fighters used during their second invasion. The Mara was fast, maneuverable, tough, and relatively small. The craft also had a superior secondary weapon capability that could even compete with that of a bomber-type. Like all Shivan fighters, the Mara was extremely well-shielded and its armoring was somehow superior to that of a typical Shivan fighter. Although it was still weaker than a Terran fighter's, its heavy shielding and swiftness made the Mara a formidable opponent in a dogfight. However, despite its specifications as a fighter-type, Maras were still impractical against larger vessels, thus they were often tasked with bomber escort.

It is the Mara class that was first designated of all Second Incursion-era Shivan fighters after a group of Mara fighters were detected emerging from the Knossos subspace portal in Gamma Draconis. The fighters, with the help of a Rakshasa-class cruiser, easily took down the patrolling GTVA force.

A special SOC managed to capture a squad of these fighters, and engineers retrofitted them for Terran use. Later, they were used in another SOC operation that discovered the actual size of the Shivan fleet, as well as a third Knossos device.
FS2 Demo Tech Room Description
Seems to be inaccurate
The Mara seems to be a Shivan heavy attack fighter. It is not as maneuverable as other Shivan fighters, but it packs quite a punch, and it is very resistant to our weaponry. Most often they have been used in attacking our supply convoys and transports.
Treat the Mara as a Class C threat.

FS2 Tech Room Description
The SF Mara class of Shivan fighters was first encountered by the GTC Vigilant while patrolling the Gamma Draconis jump node in the Capella system. All other information concerning the Mara is classified level Psi.
Veteran Comments
FS2 Tech Room Description
The new GTB Boanerges has been assigned to elite bomber squadrons in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Terran battle groups. The challenge of maintaining an aging fleet has motivated the GTVA to develop a new generation of ships able to withstand long-term abuse in the field. By maximizing shielding and payload (while offering enough maneuverability to make it a viable tactical unit), the Boanerges promises to remain in service for decades to come. One test pilot observed that the Boanerges handles better than any other bomber and has enough firepower to make it a formidable anti-capship weapon.
{{Comment|
Most people seem to have been disappointed with the Boanerges. I'm one of them. Despite the tech description, the Boanerges really does not seem to handle better than an Ursa. It also lacks the Ursa's second primary bank, having only a single two-gun set of primaries. In most anti-capital missions you'll want a Maxim primary, and dogfighting with a Maxim is an exercise in futility most of the time. This leaves you to fall back on your secondaries for anti-fighter protection, an uncomfortable situation, as secondaries run out. (And if you're not going after caps, why are you in a heavy bomber anyways?) It also does not seem to have a significantly stronger set of shields or a much stronger hull than an Ursa. Its only saving grace is that it has larger secondary bays and so can put a greater amount of weight on target before it runs dry... but sometimes this really does not seem enough to justify its use.

Basically the same thing as an Ursa, but with one primary and a greater secondary payload in two banks. Slightly faster too.

From the tech room description the Boanerges is really not meant to be better than the Ursa, but rather to be at least as good, the main driver for its adoption being reducing the maintenance burden. IMO the Boanerges is the better pure bomber, assuming that all heavy bomber wings are escorted by fighters, as they should be (but sometimes aren't), if you want to dogfight as well as bomb then you should really be using a light bomber like the Artemis or a Zeus, not a heavy bomber at all.

A crucial line is crossed in the Boanerges. Previous heavy bombers were incapable of dogfighting. The Boanerges is incapable of defending itself.

I've never, ever used the Boanerges in any mission that I seriously undertake (because there's always the Ursa). I fly bombers to blow up large ships; I need more firepower than speed, and the Boanerges gives me neither. I can understand that the GTVA wants to cut costs, but this isn't the way to do it! Why in the sands of Vasuda would they make a fairly-slow, boxy bomber with NO TURRET and only TWO PRIMARY BANKS? It's completely suicidal! I would never, ever recommend any of my squadmates to fly this! I'd rather be in an Ursa or even an Osiris! At least I can hold my own then!

I think the test pilot mentioned in the tech description was looking a a fat wad of cash and promotion papers when he spoke.}}
This class is probably the most powerful Shivan capital vessel, second only to the SJ Sathanas and maybe the SD Lucifer. In possesion of 4 forward-facing beam cannons, it can rip through the hull of a GTD Hecate or an Orion-class destroyer in under a minute, and take out smaller vessels within seconds. Its anti-capital ship weaponry make it a threat to any vessel, even one the size of the GTVA Colossus.
{{comment|The Ravana is scary-looking, but it's not tough. Weaker in terms of hull strength, and MUCH weaker in terms of turret strength then the Demon, the Ravana pays for its attack-oriented design with weak defenses. Indeed, fighters and bombers can range over the front three-quarters of Ravana's upper surfaces with near-impunity, and the lower-spine-mounted SAAA beam is placed too far back to defend the Ravana's main guns. It has a flak turret and another SAAA for anyone who comes up behind it, however. A capital ship behind a Ravana, on the other hand, is the Shivan destroyer's death sentence, as its engine subsystems are not strong and cover nearly the whole rear surface of the destroyer. Paired Trebuchets to the main beams the moment one of these enters the mission, then ignore it unless directed otherwise.

In The Great Hunt I was actually able to destroy the Ravana's main beam cannons before it fired on the Deimos corvettes, that's how weak they are. (Didn't make a difference, the corvette is destroyed by a SEXP). However, the Ravana, if used in its intended offensive role, can easily decimate a destroyer before being destroyed.

In a nutshell, the Ravana is useless if it is engaged from behind, and a light threat if side to side with another destroyer. This destroyer's saving grace is in its raw firepower facing foward. When deployed in a strategic position, or jumping in behind another destroyer, this beast will be your worst nightmare. Since most destroyers have their main beams facing forward and the odd ligher beam mounted aft (in the Hecate's case, two), it can dish out enough firepower to level the destroyer, and only take moderate damage. but this is only the case when the Hecate is alone. Roughly two wings of fighters, of any class, can knock out any anti-cap beam the Ravana wields & keep fighter cover on a friendly vessel. Just keep an eye on its beam cannons & you should get out all right. As stated before, the Ravana is no Demon, so it can't take as much punishment.

Ah yes, the Ravana is a fearsome sight, and it does have some fearsome weapons to suit...only that they're all pointing forwards. That single SAAA on its rear may be an annoyance to bombers, but that's all it has for rear fighter-bomber cover. Destroy it and get a corvette to jump in behind it, and the Ravana's finished.

The Ravana is one of the most powerful destroyers in FS2 (in terms of anti-warship firepower), and can beat out even an Orion in a duel. Its anti-fighter defenses are somewhat mediocre, however, and its main beams have weak armor in addition to its anti-fighter defenses being positioned poorly to defend them. You should be able to take out its main beams in a matter of seconds with your primaries without being bothered by any of its defenses.

We see three warships of this class in the main FS2 campaign and we don't know if they're widely present in the Shivan fleet. In custom campaigns the Ravana is without any doubt the most common Shivan capital ship. The player is usually tasked to destroy its main beam cannons in deja-vu missions which are an outrage to this warship. If you consider the presence of a Ravana in your custom campaign, try to avoid typos like the one mentioned above and don't make it a sitting duck easy to defeat. Don't forget that the first Ravana encountered by GTVA forces easily destroyed a corvette and a destroyer and damaged many other ships: it really is a considerable threat and the using the fire-beam SEXP to maximize firepower isn't forbidden.

One thing worth noting about the Ravana's model is that it is glitched. The destroyer's turrets can actually shoot THROUGH it and hit you, so unless you're flanking it, there isn't much of a safe spot anywhere else.

On the above comment, not only is the HTL Ravana shoot through by it's turrets, it's almost impossible to hit anything, as half it's subsystems are out in space. And on the comment above that one, Warzone is one of the few campaigns that does this ship justice. It truly inspires fear the first time the Revial jumps in. Even on the defensive, she took out a decent number of ships. Destroyers, contrary to how many campaigns play out, aren't meant to be killed in groups every mission. They're massive, valuable assets, whose commanders are the most skilled their side has to offer. How is it that the Aquitaine survives the whole campaign, yet an uncountable number of other destroyers die?}}

But the anti-capital beams come at a price. The Ravana-class is more vulnerable to fighter and bomber attacks than its brother, the Demon-class. Still, it would take a large number of squadrons to take out such a target.
The GTD Hecate-class of destroyers is the advanced, more developed version of the GTD Orion. Specifically developed to mount advanced weaponry such as flak or beam cannons, it meant a threat to any capital-sized ships.
One of the most famous of these destroyers was the GTD Aquitaine, a ship that played a major part in the Second Shivan Incursion.
Description:
FS2 Tech Room Description
The new GTD Hecate class of destroyers is replacing the Orion class as the flagship of Terran battle groups. More heavily armed than the Orion, the Hecate also carries over 150 combat spacecraft and a crew of 10,000. The GTD Aquitaine is a superb example of this new ship class, serving as the flagship of the Capella-based 3rd Fleet.
{{Comment|
The Hecate is admirably armed for killing fighters and deals with fightercraft threats far, far better than an Orion. However, if you need to form Battle Line and handle big targets, the Hecate is not the ship you want.

My best guesses as to why the Hecate would, or could replace the Orion is that it costs much less, and that it holds an extra four and a half squadrons. (There are twelve combat-craft in a squadron.) Also I suppose in an optimal battle scenario (if there is such a thing) the Hecate would be escorted by corvettes and cruisers.

It does work well in a surgical strike role, hitting smaller warships with its considerable forward firepower before they have much chance to fight back. But if attacked by a warship from any direction but the front, it's in real trouble and needs to either leave fast or rely on bomber wings to take care of the threat.

Oddly enough, I found this to be more vulnerable to bombers than an Orion.

It depends at which side you decide to attack the Hecate. Because it has such a large surface area, it needs many more effective turrets to cover every nook and cranny of the Hecate. At certain angles, the Hecate has enough turrets to easily destroy a lot of bombers, but at others, it has far less coverage.

I disagree with the previous posts. The Hecate is designed to be able to defend itself from all angles and not allow itself to be outflanked. While it is not as effective against other destroyers as an Orion, its turret placement means it would be able to outmaneuver other ships and attack them from angles they would not be able to return fire from.

It can be outflanked. At certain angles it is a fortress, but at others you can easily fly through light turret fire, or just disable the turret. In addition to this, the Hecate has exactly the same top speed and rotation time as the Orion. In effect, the Orion could also outmaneuver ships and attack from angles that are unguarded. I find the Hecate inferior to the Orion in almost every way.

I wouldn't criticize it for its armament so much as the placement of its armament. While the Hecate is well-armed, and can generally pepper targets approaching it from a range, it has several blind spots. Any fighter or bomber approaching from the front will face minimal anti-fighter fire and can hide in the shadow of the frontal fins and blast away, to name the most significant. The rear TerSlash is useless, because it has a very limited field of fire, and is as a weapon especially useless in the rear. In addition, the Hecate is as slow as the Orion, and has no more armour than the Orion. The forward BGreen and TerSlash, while making the destroyer relatively powerful if aimed properly, is outdone by other destroyers. I guess that the fighter bay has got to count for something but overall the Hecate is ruined potential. It could use a serious armament revision, and some of the turrets could be moved to different spots on the hull.

The massive turrets on top carry only Heavy Flak. This leaves them rather unfulfilling, and their size means they're easily taken out, leaving the top part of the ship more or less open to bomber attack. GTVA would be best suited to scrap the large turrets and put a number of smaller, dispersed turrets on, including pherhaps a pair of SGreens or Fusion Mortars.
The Myrmidon is not the uberfighter tech room makes it out to be. It's actually slower than the GTF Ulysses on afterburner, and what they don't tell you about those three secondary banks is that the first two are very small. It can't carry the signature dogfighter's missile, the GTM Harpoon, but it can make use of all three of the primary dogfighting cannon: GTW Subach HL-7, GTW Prometheus S, and GTW UD-8 Kayser.

It does, however, have a problem in the primaries department. While the Myrmidon actually has six guns, granting it some serious firepower, their configuration is sub-optimal for dogfighting and hitting with the upper four guns requires some ignoring of the "Aim Here" aid. As an aside/general oddity, the Myrmidon is actually capable of carrying the GTM Helios bomb. It has enough space for four of them, giving it a considerable threat to poorly defended capital ships.

This class of fighter is ideal for those who prefer balance between firepower, strength and agility. The secondary weapon capacity equals with the Perseus with some compatibility differences. While the Myrmidon is unable to carry the Harpoon, the player needs to be better with primaries than secondaries. The six primary guns will help players with these preferences. The first and the second bank are ideally armed with GTM Tornadoes and the third with GTM Tempests. The second bank is not the best with Tempest because of the location of the firing points. Players might prefer this fighter for tactical runs as it is compatible with the GTW Akheton SDG anti-subsystem cannon. If you arm it to the first primary bank, you still have the second bank, which has four firing points to arm with the GTW Prometheus S.

The Myrmidon is actually a reasonably capable fighter, its only really important flaw is the lack of GTM Harpoon capability.

The Myrmidon sounds good on paper, but in the field, the Myrmidon is one of the worst fighters in the game. It may be fast, but its maneuverability is closer to that of a bomber than a fighter, worse by far than the Ulysses or even the Apollo. Its primaries are placed poorly for dogfighting, especially the top four, which are the ones you would normally be relying on in a six-gun ship anyway. The missile bank capacity is average at best, and it does not carry the GTM Harpoon, a fatal mistake for a dogfighter. Its target profile is absolutely enormous from any angle, and its huge engines shout "I'M RIGHT HERE! SHOOT ME!". My best guess for the optimal role of this ship is as a fast-attack fighter. Load it up with GTM Tornadoes, crank the engine power, and unleash flaming death on freighters, transports, gas miners, and other weak ships, and then get away fast before the escorts swarm you (let's leave aside the mysteriously present Helios capability, which is tantamount to cheating). Once you get the Perseus, you will never fly the Myrmidon again, except in the SOC loop where you must fly it.

The Myrmidon is an excellent fighter, people just think of it as the successor of the GTF Ulysses which it isn't, really. This fighter is much more in the vein of the GTF Apollo. It's maneuverability isn't really that bad, and those six primary shots will chew through anything very quickly. These fighters are more adaptable than the GTF Perseus, with three missile slots rather than two this fighter can carry a more varied load out, and changes to the ETS system of this ship dramatically change its abilities. If you need to defend a corvette, than attack a cruiser, then maybe take out some turrets on a Hecate, and maybe dogfight a few Dragons this ship will serve well, if you were just planning on doing any one of those things, there's probably a better fighter for the job.

A useful strike bomber. A wing of Myrmidons equipped with Helios torpedoes will pose a fearsome threat to any ship beneath destroyer class. It's secondary gun bank of 4 guns gives it a dangerous edge in dogfights.

Though the Myrmidon can carry 4 Helios torpedoes, the two are never issued together in any single player missions, making the Myrmidon useless as a strike bomber in the main campaign. But in user-made campaigns or multiplayer missions, the Myrmidon is capable of blowing up any destroyer easily. Other than that, it has 6 guns which would have made it excellently suited to dogfighting, if it had carried the Harpoon. But since it doesn't, other fighters are better suited.

Although it lacks the Harpoon, it more than makes up for this with its lack of other major flaws and its compatibility with A.) the Kayser and B.) the Trebuchet. With a quad-kayser bank you can pretty much shred things in knife-fight range anyway, so the Harpoon doesn't cause too much of a heartache. Even with Subachs, this thing can hit hard. I think the reason they left out the harpoons is that maybe would have made it *TOO* good.

V made a number of flubs with the tables for FS2. It's likely that the Myrmidon either WAS intended to be a next-gen strike bomber, or was copied from a table for said bomber, and was incorrectly modifed. This would explain the Helios, and also the sub-par handling, armor, and the lack of dogfighting missles. (Remember, most of the games fighters and bombers can carry both Hornets and Tornadoes)}}
RNI Systems' GTF Myrmidon replaces the Ulysses as the Alliance's primary space superiority fighter. The Myrmidon has received high marks for speed, maneuverability, armor, and loadout. An ultra-efficient hull configuration provides space for three secondary weapon systems, a first for Terran-Vasudan fighters. This versatility enables Myrmidon squadrons to fulfill a range of combat roles, from light assault to heavy reconnaissance. In the Deneb system, the 53rd Hammerheads of the GTD Aquitaine have demonstrated the effectiveness of the Myrmidon against NTF forces.
Nankam Aeronautical’s GTF Myrmidon replaces the Ulysses as the Alliance’s primary space superiority fighter. A joint Terran-Vasudan endeavor, the Mymidon has received high marks for speed, maneuverability, armor, and loadout. An ultra-efficient hull configuration provides for the mounting of three secondary fire control systems, a first for Terran-Vasudan fighters. ==Description:==
FS2 Tech Room Description
GTF Erinyes craft are fresh off the drawing boards of Triton Dynamics. Though fast and heavily armored, their main attraction is firepower. With eight primary banks and two secondary weapon bays, Erinyes are at the top of the combat craft food chain. Both sets of weapon banks have been designed to maximize compatibility with the greatest possible number of weapon system. Erinyes-class ships are being evenly distributed through the GTVA fleet, but only elite pilots are currently authorized to fly them.
{{Comment|
The pinnacle of GTVA technology, nothing and no one (smaller than a destroyer, anyways) is superior to the Erinyes. Pilots used to having lots of missiles in a heavy fighter will be somewhat disappointed, but the Eryines does have more missiles then the standard GTVA fighter. Those eight primary cannon, however, are truly impressive in their destructive power. Unfortunately, the Erinyes mounts a few too many guns for its capicator to handle on mid-to-high difficult levels and so should mount a mixed armament, unless one is an expert marksman.

This ship is good for all purposes, whether they be attack or escort. The secondary banks are somewhat for a vessel its size, but greater than most and especially compensated by its enormous firepower. Getting hit by a full bank of Prometheus S will put anything in bad shape, especially considering how close the shots are to each other, which means that it is not likely you will be hit by a glancing shot. However repeated firing will drain your power supply quickly, which It also has lots of armour, and good maneuverability and speed for a heavy fighter, and a small target profile when viewed from the front and back, though it can be easily hit from the sides.

The real advantage of the Erinyes is its versatiliy, it can mount nearly every non-Bomb weapon, sure most ships can do one or two things better than it can, but It betters every one of them in at least one useful respect. Its the only 'Everyman' Fighter in either game not to suffer from not being able to mount some of the better ordinanace, and nothing chews through entire Shivan Bomber waves quite as fast as close in Primary fire from an Erinyes. This is the fighter that rewards good piloting more than any other

Fans tend to overrate the Erinyes's specifications and regard it as undefeatable and indestructible simply because it has 8 primary banks. It is doubtlessly an advantage, but every advantage has a disadvantage: The Erinyes eats more primary power than any other fighters in the game. In addition, it is slow, inmaneuverable, and easy to hit even from long range. While a skilled pilot is able to survive an attack from behind, the Erinyes still rates low on survivability due to its large size and sluggishness. Although its weapon compatibility is excellent, anti-cruiser and anti-warship bombs cannot be mounted on the Erinyes. It's pretty suitable for escort missions as long as proper fighter escort is given to take down any interceptor fighters that might attack the escorters. With its firepower, taking down bombers is easier than with any other craft, but in order to maintain a pauseless flow of laser, you must divert more power to your primaries. This usually means slower shield recharge or even less speed; or usually both. Its disadvantage in escort missions is its low speed, which is rarely compensated by its superior primary firepower. Getting from one side of a Hecate to another is time-consuming.

There is little need for Prometheus or Kaysers on this. 8 Subachs can do serious damage and be fired continuously, though some additional stopping power could be supported, if that is your choice

True, a simple all Subach loadout is very effective. I personally prefer to carry one Kayser and one Maxim, myself. The Kayser for normal dogfighting, the Maxim for attacking small capships, and shooting down bombs. Of course, this does eat energy like a pig...

I don't mind flying an Erinyes... but in my opinion, it eats up too much power. That's why I would prefer the GTF Ares to this, despite the fact that the Ares is slower. I will give praise to this fighter, however, for its durability and maneuverability. However, it is an energy hog if you attempt to fire dual Kaysers. I won't be too mad over its secondary banks though; just fill them up with Tempests and be done with it! With the kind of primary firepower this ship sports, there is almost no need to have aspect-seeking missiles.

For sniping fighters, nothing beats an Erinyes with 8 Prometheus S: Comparable damage per shot to a Kayser, better range and accuracy and energy efficiency. The higher rate of fire of the Kayser is insignificant if we can't keep it up thanks to energy constraints.

GTF Ares is better in most regards, except sheer one-shot close range stopping power and more importantly, maneuverability. With this, you can destroy even a Dragon if you're good - it takes just one or two hits. Weigh this against additional Trebuchets you can load on an Ares.

I could just never learn to love the Erynies. During the Capella missions, i always took a Perseus or Herc 2 over this. }}
Description:
FS1 Tech Room Description
The Cain is by far the most common cruiser in the Shivan fleet. It is also the weakest. However, the Cain should not be underestimated. It has many turrets, as well as a cluster bomb defensive mechanism. As a strike cruiser, the Cain mostly appears in attacks against GTA or PVN capital ships and cruisers. In these cases, it should be destroyed immediately. The primary weakness of the Cain appears to be its unshielded turrets. Most of the turrets on the Cain can be destroyed with minimal damage.<br><br>
The Cain is a Class B threat.

FS2 Tech Room Description
The weakest of the Shivan cruiser classes is designated SC Cain. These vessels were commonly encountered during Great War battles. Cains are considered to be slightly stronger than the GTC Fenris cruiser class.

Description:
FS2 Tech Room Description
Fast and highly maneuverable, the GVF Serapis is primarily used as a bomber interceptor. Its thin armor and weak shields give it a low survival rate in dogfights against more heavily armored fighters. Despite having only two primary and secondary weapon banks, the Serapis has been retrofitted to accommodate almost any loadout in the GTVA arsenal. Veteran Vasudan pilots love the Serapis for its agility and loadout options. Some Terran pilots who've been privileged enough to fly it claim to prefer it to any Terran fighter.
{{comment|
The Serapis is deployed as if it were a space superiority fighter in the Vasudan missions of the Main Campaign, but don't let that fool you. This is in fact a civilian ultralight for airshows. While that sounds harsh, it is unfortunately rather true. A joy to simply fly thanks to its speed and manuverablity, the Serapis is also disturbingly fragile, at least as much as the FS1-era GTF Valkyrie if not more so. The Serapis has an extremely high attrition rate in combat: AI pilots drop like flies in it. Give them Taurets, Horuses, or Seths instead during the main campaign.

The Serapis is a light interceptor which was not designed to survive in prolonged battles. Those who liked flying the GVF Horus or the GVF Thoth will probably like this fighter as it is superior to its predecessors. The main strength of the Serapis is its weapon compatibility. A pilot who prefers intercepting fighters to doing heavy assault will most likely prefer this during the Vasudan missions. It is to be noted that most Terran interceptors have better combat performance though.

The only real reason you should choose this is for the fact that it is the only Vasudan fighter compatible with the Maxim. Its maneuverability and moderate speed makes it good for getting behind bombers and chalking them off, but its lack of armor and shielding make it a bad choice for all but the most skilled of players in engaging other fighters.

This fighter is useless. It has less shielding and actually goes slower than the Valkyrie of old. Its only saving grace is its ability to carry the Maxim and its extra missile bank (which is minuscule anyway). Always use the Tauret or Horus when you can, rather than this paper-thin pair of wings.

"Some Terran pilots who've been privileged enough to fly it claim to prefer it to any Terran fighter." This is because they're idiots. The Serapis is slower than the Horus, has weaker shields and armour, and is only marginally more manoueverable. It's only advantage is the extra missile capacity, but since you'll die before you can use them, this isn't much of an advantage. Whoever classed this as an "Advanced" interceptor is having a joke. And as for comparing it to Terran fighters...

The Horus is a far better interceptor than this thing. Intercept needs high speed, good manoeuvrability. While this is one of the most manoeuvrable fighters you will ever have access to in the game, it just doesn't have the speed to do intercept. One thing to note however, is that in the right hands, it is a surprisingly capable dog fighter. But it is extremely fragile, to the point that you may want to reroute some power to shields. You really can't take more than a few hits. But overall I find it much more like the Ulysses than anything else. Its a supreme dogfighter like it, but it cannot stand prolonged combat, even less so than the Ulysses. However, it does have a second secondary (Giving it more versatility and a total capacity more than twice the size), and it does have a Maxim, which is a bit odd, but allows it an option when dealing with warships, and makes it good for hunting down transports, freighters and miners.

The Serapis can fly, but it's made out of tracing paper; I've seen a video where the front quadrant of a Serapis — at full power, by the way — was completely taken down by just one hit from a Shivan laser mounted on the rear of a Rakshasa (a second shot knocked the Serapis' hull integrity from 100% to 79%). It has a few advantages over the Horus, however, in that it can carry the Maxim, and that it lacks the inertia of the Horus while pitching. This is why I would rather use this ship for intercept than use the Horus.

Piece of crap. Flies well, but is taken down in just a couple shots.

It is worth mentioning that the Serapis has a higher energy output than anything short of an Ares or Mara, 70% more than a Perseus or Ulysses. The fast recharge and excellent handling make this very survivable if one takes being shot at seriously instead of shrugging it off and finishing the current target first (bad idea given the low shield capacity). I find it the ideal craft for destroying waves of fighters and taking cheap shots at capital ships with Maxims in between.
If this was compatible with Kaysers (putting all that power to good use), I would prefer this over any Terran Fighter.

I could never adapt to vasudan ships. They're philosophy of having faster, weaker craft seems to plague even their most heavy bobmers. Especially for the AI, manueverability and speed doesn't seem to save them. The Perseus is by far a better craft, having nearly equal loadout and handling, equal primaries, and is even faster in both normal and afterburner speeds! Though, as mentioned above, the Serapis has much better energy recharge, that's not the biggest help if you have a number of enemies on you, which makes it hard to quickly take them out. The Perseus also can't carry Maxims, but given the plethora of other craft available, theres much better options than this.
FS2 Tech Room Description
Learning a lesson from the bomber losses of the Great War, Vasudan defense contractor Akheton designed the GVB Bakha, a fast, agile bomber that could still deliver a warship-shattering payload. The Bakha's dual Akh-12 engines are baffled and masked, giving it a small profile for heat-seeking missiles. The bomber's speed and maneuverability make it the craft of choice for taking out destroyers and corvettes with multiple flak, AAA, and anti-ship beam turrets. Over 6,000 Bakhas have been produced in the orbiting shipyards around Vasuda Prime.
{{comment|The Bakha is a Vasudan version of the Artemis, pretty much. Like most Vasudan equivalents it maneuvers better and is somewhat tougher. Unlike the Artemis, the Bakha has two gun banks, much better positioned for dogfighting than those of the Artemis.

The Bakha is truly a bomber with pretensions of the wild life, and can dogfight fairly well against any heavy or space superiority fighters you may encounter. Don't let it go to your head, though, as the interceptors can still outmaneuver you easily. Also keep in mind that you have only two secondary banks (the bomber-issue third is missing) and that diverting power to your engines does not increase your speed, only the rate at which your afterburners recharge.

Never quite understood the Bakha. The Vasudans had a superb bomber in the form of the Sekhmet, which can do everything the Bakha can do, if not better. What I'm wondering is why they're wasting production capacity on the Bakha when they could simply run only Sekhmets through the lines. The Bakha is a good bomber but it simply doesn't hold up to the Sekhmet. Maybe it's the slightly better maneuverability and the secondary gunpoint, but those are not nearly big enough advantages in my view.

Probably simply a cheaper version of GVB Sekhmet, as that is superior to it in all regards. Simply try Bearbaiting in a Sekhmet with cheats. (FREDded version with ship picker)

The Bahka just doesn't know what it wants to be. Like most other vasudan ships, it's severely deficient in shields. Though it can carry Helios, don't expect that to matter much. Fighters seem to latch on to you, and in any situation were a Bahka would be used (eliminating hostile destroyers and corvette before they can damage friendly forces, strategic strikes on large capital ships) the fighter defenses alone on the hostile ship spell death, especially on higher difficulty levels. Making matters worse, the Bahka can't carry Maxims, defeating on of the few good purposes of dividing the firepower. This also means that a Bahka can't snipe off enemy turrets from afar, thus clearing an area for an attack run.
The GVC Mentu cruiser is the lightest of the new Vasudan warships. Following the Great War, allied scientists developed the beam cannons that now serve as the primary armaments of today's GTVA warships. Rather than modify existing ships, the Vasudans developed new designs to mount these weapons. The Mentu's 16 turrets include heavy beam cannons for duking it out with other warships, as well as AAA and flak turrets to fend off smaller craft. The GVC Somtus and the GVC Mycerinus recently demonstrated the strength of the Mentu against NTF forces in Epsilon Pegasi.
{{comment|The Mentu is victim of poor weapons placement. Its main weaponry, flaks and AAA beams, is pointed upwards; attack from below, and pay the most attention to enemies below. It is also worth noting that, despite the techroom description, the Mentu mounts no anticapital beams. That said, if deployed in pairs arranged to provide mutual protection to their undersides (read that: bottom facing the other's bottom at 50 meters or less) or providing additional anti-aerospace protection to a larger ship with its guns facing outwards from the larger craft's hull and using the larger ship to protect its vunerable underside, the Mentu can be every bit as dangerous as the Aeolus.

Despite its absense of capship weapons, it is best in its role as a cargo escort against lots of bombers and no capital ships. Having a group of them in a convoy can cause trouble for all sorts of enemy bombers despite the lack of significant defensive weaponry on its underside.

A number of campaigns have equipped the Mentu with one or more Svas beams, in addition to other, smaller armament changes. Be warned if you attempt to approach one in PI, for example, though the changes are more easily apparent there than other mods.
When the first of the PVD Typhon-class of destroyers was deployed during the Terran-Vasudan War, it devastated Terrans 4th Fleet at the time of its first engagement.

When the Shivans first emerged, both races deployed the best of their forces. For the Vasudans, their task force was led by the PVD Pinnacle. One such vessel, the HLD Anvil served as the flagship for the dissident group of Vasudan rebels, the Hammer of Light.

After the Great War ended, many Typhon-class ships were armed with beam and flak cannons and, in a limited number, saw action during the Shivans' return in 2367. However, the destroyers power grid was ill suited to these new weapons and its forebear, the GVD Hatshepsut, was superior on every possible aspect.

Description:
FS1 Tech Room Description
Where the Aten cruiser failed, the Typhon succeeded well past expectations. The Typhon is an incredible work of engineering and the model of Vasudan technology. When the first one was sighted at the Vega Engagement, it was laughed at by our technicians as a foolish display of non utilitarian design. The subsequent destruction of the GTD Eisenhower and the total decimation of the 4th fleet changed their minds very quickly. The Typhon should never be underestimated. It wields massive weaponry, and has more armor plating than any Terran Destroyer. Its only known weakness is its turret armor, which is significant, but lower than expected. In the two years since this ship first appeared, we have only managed to destroy two of them.

The Typhon is considered a Class A threat to any ships within the same system. Do not engage without backup.

FS2 Tech Room Description
The GVD Typhon was the height of Vasudan military technology when it appeared to face Terran forces during the early days of the Terran-Vasudan War. The first Typhon was sighted at the Vega Engagement and quickly destroyed the GTD Eisenhower and much of the 4th fleet. The more recent Hatshepsut class of destroyers is larger and wields a deadlier array of armaments, but the Typhon is still a match for almost any foe. Up to 30 wings of fighters or bombers can be housed within its docking bays, ready to engage at a moment's notice.
{{comment|The Typhon poses a threat to fightercraft much more then the Orion. In FS1 it mounts a number of rather dangerous FighterKiller missile batteries; in FS2 it has acquired flak guns and AAA beams to supplement its now-marginally effective missile batteries. Treat it carefully at first, but if you can identify and remove the more dangerous turrets, the Typhon becomes much less of a problem.

With 20,000 more hit points, the Typhon is better-armored than the GTD Orion, but the Orion has a much stronger broadside- 66% more turrets in FS1, and 3 times as many beams in FS2. Although the Typhon's anti-bomber/fighter defenses are better than its Terran equivalent, a determined attack by heavy fighters could wipe out 90% of those defenses with minimal casualties, in FreeSpace 1 or 2. The Typhon's only real advantage in either game is two more fighter squadrons.

But perhaps the Vasudans are smart. Bombers are the real capship killers, and the Typhon's impressive 30 wings and better anti-fighter armament would give it an edge in an FS1 battle versus Orion. Particularly in a battle with FS1-style unshielded fighters, the Orion's blob turrets can be dodged, but the Typhon's FighterKiller aren't as easy to shake off. Despite the advances in capital ship defenses in FS2, large ships are still sitting ducks against a real fighter/bomber attack, like in most space shooters.
Name origin
In Hebrew, Moloch is most commonly associated with sacrifice.

Moloch is a form of the ancient Carthagian god Baal, named moloch-baal. This god was depicted as a winged taurus with a fire breathing mouth in which men were thrown in to be sacrificed. The bible then demonised moloch baal: Possibly the golden taurus the hebrews were worshipping when moses came down from the sinai mount was referred to this deity.
{{comment| The Moloch is a poor excuse for a Shivan vessel and an even poorer excuse for a corvette. A Lilith poses more threat to allied forces than this big target. Its only saving grace is its ability to carry fighters, but it's never enough to turn the tide of battle.

The Moloch is an opponent to be taken seriously, despite all the negative commentary, and the statement a Deimos can take one on successfully is somewhat debateable. Shivans use much more effective (and faster-cycling) direct-fire beams, of which the Moloch has three SRed-types. Like most Shivan capital craft, its antifighter defenses are rather less impressive then those of a comparable Terran ship. Despite this the Moloch's defenses are nonetheless probably the best, pound for pound, of any Shivan capital craft. It mounts a considerable number of flak guns, and they are well-posistioned. The broadside flaks are placed in such a way as to make them difficult to target at range, but still provide good coverage to the sides of the ship. Eliminating them requires getting in dangerously close. The aft flak is more vunerable, but is also a heavy mount and still capable of inflicting significant damage. The Moloch is a dangerous opponent to an unwary fightercraft. Fortunately, there are no anti-fighter beams.

The fighterbay is never used in the Freespace 2 campaign. The Moloch has by far the worst firepower and anti-fighter defenses of any corvette, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a niche. The Moloch is a cruiser hunter, easily capable of destroying one of the best cruisers in the game, the Aeolus, which the Moloch survives without suffering any real damage. However, when faced with a cruiser and a wing of heavy assault fighters, as in the demo mission Crisis in Capella the Moloch is in deep trouble, provided the fighters can destroy its main beam turrets quickly enough (they can). Under few circumstances will a Moloch prevail over a GTCv Deimos, unless the Moloch launches bombers, the Deimos's many flak guns and AAA turrets add to its total firepower, and although the SReds are definitely more accurate, the TerSlash does 2.2 times the maximum sustained damage, and the Deimos has four, as opposed to the Moloch's three. (It should be noted however that the absolute number either ship can bring to bear of its totals is only two. If that.) However, if the Moloch is a good distance away, its accurate SReds will be more effective than the TerSlash beams of the Deimos. Still, in a poll, it was found few people actually consider the Moloch superior to the Deimos.

I don't wanna insult anyone, but everybody who says this ship isn't dangerous has never fought it! :) The plating of its turrets is more than poor in comparison to the over corvettes, yes. But:
Firstly: Its anti-fighter missiles can hit you everywhere. At a Sobek, I can hide beneath the rear side and it won't hit me if I just take out one single flak gun.
Secondly: The convoluted design of the Moloch makes it much more difficult to disarm than a Sobek for example. At the Sobek I can park two klicks above and eliminate almost all of its turrets, including the main beam cannons. At the Moloch the antifighter and beam cannons are evenly spread all over the ship.
My conclusion: Maybe not as good as the Deimos, but definitely better than the Sobek - which is already deadly!
Do not underestimate the Moloch, just because of the distorted image the main campaign gives of it. They also misused the Aeolus!

Not as good as the Sobek. It really isn't. No anti-fighter beams on this thing. But its still troublesome to attack due to the sheer number of missiles it can shoot out. The SReds are a little underpowered in comparison to its size, but it is still capable of taking out cruisers and other corvettes.

The Moloch has a blind spot if you position yourself directly in front of it with a slight elevation. Here, the only weapon that can hit you is a single blob turret which is easily taken out, leaving you safe to lob off bombs with no fear of flak.

Don't be fooled by the large 'eye' in the front- it's just a blob turret, though it should be an anti cap beam. If you've ever flied against one of these, you know the first thing to do is take out the pirahna turrets, otherwise you'll be ripped apart. They explode at the same time as another is launched, so watch out. the best way to take one of these out is to treb the missle turrets, then send in a wing of bombers while you deal with the fighters. Be warned, the underside has some serious antifighter power, you'll quickly be battered by several blobs, swarming heat-seekers, and at least one flak.

FS2 Tech Room Description
Only one class of Shivan ship is classified as a corvette - the SCv Moloch class. Though they're physically as large as the GTCv Deimos class, Molochs do not seem to pack the same punch. They are far more deadly than any Shivan cruisers, however.

It is well-armed cannon fodder, however, and going head-to-head with an Aeshma should be avoided, as those Shivan Mega Lasers can be somewhat painful. Outmaneuvering the Aeshma should not present great problems for anything short of a Boanerges or Ursa.

Worst Shivan ship in the game. I bet even Amazons' could dogfight this thing... and win. In As Lightning Fall, these things seem to have the dumbest AI ever. They just sit around you and try to take a peek in your cockpit... Really. They just come around, get in front of you and look at you, firing an occasional, badly aimed shot.

If you end up fighting wings of these fighters, take the opportunity to kill them all. They're slow, big bullseyes, and will help you rack up more kills towards promotions and aces.

Practice your sniping skills on this fighter. Take the Prometheus, target one Aeshma and start shooting at max range. Usually I can take one of them before they close in at 1100m, the second one goes down soon after the first. These things don't even try to evade shots.

During the Derelict mission where the Nyarlathotep awakens, these things can barely hold their own against Amazons guarding the destroyer. Try editing the tables and flying an Aeshma yourself sometime. You'll see why the AI has so much trouble with it; maneuverability is terrible and isn't compensated for with armor or armament.

This class of ship is ridiculous. As per the above comments, it always flies head-on towards you! I think even cargo containers pose a greater threat than the Aeshma. No strategies are needed to kill a ship of this class.
Veteran Comments
{{comment|<i>When escorting craft smaller than a cruiser, priority should go to destroying attacking Basilisks before smaller Shivan fighters. If allowed to reach their target, a wing of Basilisks will make one's escort list shorter very quickly.

However, the Basilisk is both slow and ungainly. Between its lack of maneuverability and an afterburner that the AI seems to never use, the Basilisk resembles a heavily shielded target drone (that you should nevertheless refrain from going head-to-head with).

The Basilisk is in fact, the most heavily shielded fighter in FreeSpace 1, that really doesn't matter, however, because of its horrible maneuverability and large target profile.

Skewer it with the Banshee. It may have thick shields, but the hull strength is extremely low. For escort missions, you should destroy these as a priority second only to bombers, since their Hornet-style missiles can heavily damage targets.

Ridiculously slow, weakly armored. More of a distraction than an actual threat.

Despite that they are very slow, they ARE heavily shielded, more so in fact than any other fighter in the game. Once you punch through their shields, however, they're toast since their underlying hull is paper-thin. However, they are not to be ignored if you are protecting a transport, freighter or even light cruiser. It also has a smaller rotation time than the Tauret or indeed the Myrmidon.

Thankfully, one of the most common fighters you will find in-game. Don't bother using missiles on it unless you need to kill it in a pinch. But don't underestimate it. They are quite capable of ruining transports, freighters, and even cruisers.

I love this ship! Get a Herc with Banshees and Hornets in FS1, spear these ships, serve them on a silver platter, and watch your kill count go up. Nice large target, slow, no maneuverability, and the shields are easy to get through with the Banshee.

Deceptively small, the Basilisk lacks the sheer bulk of a Terran-style assault fighter when seen from a distance But it packs the firepower; don't treat it otherwise.

I actually find this and the Aeshma hard to hit, for some strange reason. They are at the same time slower than a bomber and as agile as a fighter to me. And watch out, they tend to be loaded with hornets. If you've ever played the knossos mission in BP, you'll know how deadly an attack run by a wing of these can be. Break them up before your screen fills with yellow streaks.}}

On the second comment, the advantage of the additional fighter squads rarely comes to play in a mission. FREDders rarely have it work like that. That point really is only valid when thinking pure canon, not how things work in-game.
FS1 Tech Room Description
The Faustus Science vessel was, and still is, a civilian craft. However, in the 14 years since the Terran-Vasudan war began, more and more of these were commissioned by the GTA in order to pursue military research. However, its obvious value, poor fighting capabilities, and lack of speed make it a prime target for enemy ships; hence, you will rarely find many of these anywhere near the front lines of battle.

FS2 Tech Room Description
The GTSC Faustus is primarily a class of civilian research vessels. During times of peace, they serve as mobile laboratories for scientists in many disciplines. During wartime, however, Faustus vessels are commandeered by the military, mostly for weapons research. It was on a Faustus ship, during the Great War, that Shivan shield technology was first reverse-engineered from a captured Shivan fighter. Faustus vessels have poor armor and only a few weak turrets for defense. Only desperate circumstances find a Faustus anywhere near the front lines.
In Latin, faustus means "auspicious" or "lucky." In classical German legend, Faust is a character who makes pact with the Devil.
