The bar is a place where officers go to relax and watch the news. It is mentioned in the Reference Bible, and several cutscenes are mentioned to have taken place here. However, they were all cut from the game. The bar is located in the ITA Repulse Officer's Club. The events described in the Reference Bible are considered canon as long as they do not contradict the game.

At one point, a fight in the bar between Terrans and Vasudans erupted because a drunk, xenophobic Terran attacked a Vasudan after the Lucifer destroyed the Taranis.
Wings of Dawn Tech Room Description
The Adasya is an oddly designed cruiser-class warship. Equipped with a powerful shield generator capable of withstanding a direct hit from a Challenger's beam cannon as well as a powerful electronic warfare suite, it also has a beam emplacement capable of firing a cascade of beams at a number of different targets simultaneously. Its hull material appears to be highly resistant to energy-based weaponry but exceedingly fragile against solid projectile weapons. The Adasya's oversized reactor is highly exposed, and fighters may be able to exploit this possible weak point, though care must be taken around its homing laser point defense weapons.
Veteran Comments
{{Comment| Not only is the Adasya an oddly-designed ship, it is also unique in its own ways. While most of the beam cannons in WoD are used as some kind of frontal beam weapons, the beam sphere of the Adasya has an FOV of 360 and thus can fire in nearly every direction (it also fires in salvo mode to increase damage and beam spam factor). The homing lasers (which are in fact, secondary weapons) are quite good at destroying torpedoes and bombs. Like the tech description says, the Adasya has a really strong shield, but this fact becomes useless if you fly beneath it. The small amount of hitpoints and the gemium armor (which is also very vulnerable to bombs) make it a vulnerable target.

There are also many attractive females. However none of them will want to date you. Cause you are a loser (or have a girlfriend or wife already). Probably the first one. And FYI dakimakura are not girlfriends. Or wives.
The Fura'ngle are a crystalline race who are used as battle thralls by the Hertak in the Wings of Dawn universe. They serve as antagonists in the first Wings of Dawn campaign.

Physiology
Slowly but steadily the Fura'ngle developed from solid inorganic material into a sentient race. The Fura'ngle body consisting of a crystal like structure does not require food, oxygen or water. But is incredibly fragile against blunt impacts. Fura'ngle come in all shapes and sizes, some have limbs, some are just a crystal hump that moves about by usage of technology. As long as they consume new minerals they can live forever.

Society
The Fura'ngle government is a republic, formally the Fura'ngle Republic. Their space-based military is known as the Fura'ngle Self-Governed Fleet.

History
A slow but curious species, Fura'ngle are fascinated by new things, races and technology and spend most of their days researching and studying new things. A pacifist species, they have no desire to conquer or rule other races. Fura'ngle fear death like no other which makes them terrible soldiers. If the situation looks grim self survival usually comes first. They have a flair for dramatics and poetic speech and make for interesting story tellers, even though their voices will sound strange to many other species. The Fura'ngle have a surprisingly dark sense of humor. It's not uncommon that a research project goes horribly wrong and takes out a small city block. When this happens the brief period of grief is usually followed by a long streak of 'They died for science!' type of jokes.

When the Hertak invaded without warning or provocation the Fura'ngle expected their Zy allies to dash to their aid. But that hope crashed and burned when they learned that the sun of the Zy home world was close to going supernova and that the bulk of the Zy fleet had to assist with emergency evacuation of three planets in that system. The Fura'ngle then attempted to put up a defense for themselves by growing different designs of ships from minerals and then merging themselves with those ships. Allowing for direct control, easy maintenance and refitting of their ships. Much to their surprise they discovered that with their technology they could match and even outclass the Hertak at long safe distances. Effective resistance lasted for about a week, until the Hertak changed tactics and decided to just go for colony worlds directly. And that's when the greatest weakness of the Fura'ngle was discovered, holding a defensive line while large intimidating ships close on you requires courage, courage to face death. The line did not hold and the colony was utterly destroyed. Killing billions. This demoralized the Fura'ngle completely and they hoped they could just put an end to the fighting if they were to surrender. They did not know that they would be forced to serve as Battle thralls...

After their surrender, the Fura'ngle (in their new position as battle thralls of the Hertak) advanced on Zy systems and were forced to do battle with their old allies, or nothing of their worlds would remain.
The Yehio are a sentient race native to the Erydai system. As the Yehio were beginning to embark on early stages of global industrialization, they were discovered by the Cyrva. The Cyrva felt a need to protect this developing species from the dangers of the universe, quickly disarming the Yehio and 'guiding' them peacefully, effectively turning them into a client state.

Disagreement on the Cyrva's part on whether this choice was ethical led to escalating tensions, and eventually to the outbreak of the Doctrine War, the first civil war in Cyrvan history. Consequently, this led to the militarization of Cyrva space and the formation of the Cyrva Star Armada.

WoDArticleWoD Portal
The Cyrva are a race of 'space-elves' in the Wings of Dawn universe. Many Cyrvan characters serve as protagonists in the Wings of Dawn universe.
Physiology
Appearance wise the Cyrva do not differ much from Terrans. The most obvious difference are their 'elven' ears, which almost instantly got them the 'space elves' nickname from the Terrans. On average, Cyrvans have a hearing range between 80hz and 21,700hz.

Cyrvan males on average grow to a height between 160-180cm, Cyrvan females are on average only slightly shorter, 158-176cm. While skin color is almost always white (with the exception of the tanned from Desa) the Cyrva do have a wide range of different hair colors. Compared to a Terran, they are considerably more agile and flexible but have far less physical strength. They also have a far lower pain threshold and will take all possible measures to avoid injury.

Diseases are a rare occurrence and are seldom fatal. The average life span of a Cyrvan can vary greatly, some grow to be over a thousand years old while others 'only' make it to the eight hundred mark, signs of age usually slowly start to show around the age of six hundred. Like Terrans they are omnivores but in general have a preference for plant food.

Occasionally a Cyrvan with large wings of white feathers is born (around one in a billion), why or how this happens remains a mystery. It is possible for a Terran and a Cyrva to have a child together, but in general looked down upon from the Cyrvan side (mostly because Cyrvans tend to have only one partner for life and have a far longer life expectancy than Terrans. However it is actually encouraged on several LTW planets, though there have only been very few examples of this occurring so far.

Culture
There is no known record for any Cyrvan martial arts. While they are excellent natural sharpshooters, the average Cyrvan does not pose much of a threat in hand to hand combat.

The Cyrva have a rich culture filled with song and poetry, a lot of which is inspired by their religion. This religion known as Feryaa, which closely resembles Terran Christianity in many aspects, including the belief that there is one omnipotent God that created the universe. There is a strong taboo on research into DNA-altering genetics, not just because the Cyrva think they are already pretty damned close to perfection, but also because they believe God has not intended for them to mess with his creation on such a deep level.

This is also the reason why the birth of winged ones remain a mystery, as no one is looking into the genetics involved. The birth of a winged one is treated as a good omen for times to come and has been subject of many stories. These 'angels' are often given high-ranking ceremonial positions and are set for life, a life that many Cyrvans dream of. Few Terrans have actually seen a winged one with their own eyes.

Society
The Ten Circles
The Ten Circles of Cyrva for the Protection and Prosperity of Our Kind, often shortened to simply The Ten Circles, is the Cyrvan government and consists of ten circles, with the 10th circle being the largest, with thousands of people in it, and the 1st circle the smallest, with only a handful of elders and high admirals in it.

An example of how the system works - A project, constructing large park in a city on Desa is proposed. The 10th circle will examine, discuss and eventually votes on the project. A majority vote is reached and the project is greenlit. In 90% of the cases this is where it ends.

However, there are cases where someone in the 9th circle is completely opposed to spending resources on this project and he/she can ask for a vote about this project for the 9th circle. This could potentially mean that the 9th circle can veto the project. Which often in turn leads to lobbying to get the 8th circle to take a look at it, and so forth. The 5th circle is a special case as only winged ones are in it.

This becomes increasingly obstructive when it comes to military funding and operations, as a circle consists of both military personnel and civilians. To elaborate on that a bit more: A High Captain in active frontline service is eligible to be in the 8th circle, but is not part of the active decision making until he/she resigns from active service and takes a political military 'deskjob'. This does not apply for Rear Admirals and higher, as they are expected to be able to lead and do paper work at the same time.

Cyrva Star Armada
The Cyrva Star Armada at first glance may seem like an unorganized bunch - superiors are addressed casually by their first name by pilots and crew, while no one is barking orders. On a closer look, it can be noticed that strict discipline simply does not have to be enforced. Pilots do what is asked of them and crew members are always on time at their posts. Cyrva pilot academies do not spend hours on end drilling in routine, but have a complete focus on learning new pilots how to handle their machine and how to improve their odds of survival out on the field.

The CSA has little in terms of ground presence, following a doctrine where orbital control equals having surface control. CSA fleets consists of ships spanning many generations. Older ships are rarely decommissioned, but are occasionally refitted with newer technology. The CSA's Mobile Cyrvan Weapon Systems (MCWS) designs are usually in service for a few hundred years before being replaced by newer designs. Fleet deployments outside CSA space works on a volunteer basis - captains and pilots are under no obligation to follow an outbound fleet. This is not the case however, when defensive fleet action is required.

The CSA can muster about 9,500 capital ships and over 30,000 strikecraft, and has access to highly advanced shipyards in several systems.

History
Early history
The Cyrva originate from the Cyrvadia system, a sun very similar to that of Sol. For several thousand years, the Cyrva were content with just living their lives in peace with little worries. Technology was only advanced/developed when something was deemed too much work and effort. As the Cyrvan population grew, Cyrvan society developed into a unique government system where anyone who wants to be, can be part of the decision making process.

This peaceful existence continued for a long time until one fateful day, disaster struck. A meteor impacted Cyrvadia, killing millions. This brought forth a change, the Cyrva knew they could have prevented this if only they had actually made an effort to develop more technology. The Cyrva then entered a period of time known as 'The First Age of Advancement', in which they created ships for space travel, shielding to protect the ships and weaponry to destroy large asteroids in a single strike.

With these advancements, suddenly Desa (Cyrvadia's sister planet, which had long been a subject in poems and literature) came within reach. Before long, Desa was colonized which opened the eyes of the Cyrva - They could actually travel to other planets now! But why stop there? Let's travel to other stars!

A few hundred years later, the Cyrva had discovered Starlances and they colonized planets in eight star systems. The Cyrva then made first contact with a sentient race, the Yehio in the Erydai system. This race was only just beginning global industrialization. The Cyrva suddenly felt a need to protect and guide the still-young species from themselves and from the possible dangers of the universe. They quickly proceeded to disarm the Yehio and have been guiding them peacefully ever since.

However for the first time in Cyrva history, a internal conflict occurred - not everyone agreed on 'guiding' other species in their development. Usually disagreement is resolved through dialogue, but the views on this subject were just too conflicting. Eventually two clear sides formed - one side that was clearly opposed to helping other races, and the other which felt it was their duty given by God to do so. A ship captain from one of the sides armed with anti-asteroid weaponry, felt so strongly about it that she was willing to shed Cyrvan blood for it, firing on an unarmed vessel carrying people that did not share her opinion. The other side almost immediately responded by storming a building.

From there it escalated into a civil war. The war led to huge leaps in weapon and shielding technology. Whereas the pre-civil war spaceships were only used for transportation and celestial object destruction, the Cyrva were now designing and building actual warships. The civil war lasted for over five years, with the first two years spent mostly figuring out how to fight a war, no less one that spanned multiple star systems. The war would be known as the 'Doctrine War'. Eventually the side that wanted to guide other species emerged victorious. The fleets in the war were unified under a single command, the Cyrva Star Armada (CSA).

The CSA was refined into a highly professional and incredibly well-equipped force over the years. Without immediate need for further expansion and with no direct threats to their safety, the Cyrva once more entered a time in which they just wanted to live their lives in peace. A couple of hundred years passed, little technological advancements were being made and no significant events occurred - until the Cyrva entered the starlance to the Algol system, where the CSA made first contact with the LSF.

Terran-Cyrvan War
During the Terran-Cyrvan War, the Cyrva fared extremely well against the LSF in the beginning, due to their technological superiority and strategy. Starting with their first victory in Algol, then seizing Lyrae quickly, defeating the fierce resistance in both Tauri and Librae, the CSA had managed to fight their way into Harcon and Sol in just a single year. The Cyrva had suspected that the Terrans possessed more star systems, evidently since the CSA hadn't discovered Silva and Phoenicis yet due to the LSF defending Harcon to the bitter end. The Terrans were also churning out new weapon systems rapidly, while managing to build more effective ships. The Terrans did not falter even with thousands of casualties and losses, realizing the Cyrvan fleet received little in terms of reinforcements. The CSA fleets in Sol and Harcon was whittled down slowly to only a total of 457 capital ships, each Cyrvan ship lost boosting the Terran morale.

The Cyrvan public cast their doubts on the war, perhaps they had underestimated the Terrans. Fer'opal, commanding the CSA fleet had realized late that to reach the Terran homeworld, both the Sol and Harcon fleets had to be recombined. The drawback of ordering both fleets to regroup in the Lyrae system, was the Terran interpretation of the re-grouping as a retreat by the CSA, and played their hand accordingly. Swarming out to retake both Tauri and Librae, the LSF converged on Lyrae, putting massive pressure on Fer'opal. Unable to launch a counter attack due to his orders to return to CSA space and let a diplomatic approach be taken, the LSF followed the CSA to the Algol system, where they took orbit of Algol Prime. It was here where the LSF began orbital bombardment of the outpost on the planet. The intensity of the orbital bombardment's result was Algol Prime, utterly ruined - crust cracked in multiple areas, transforming the planet into molten wastelands of lava and brimstone, resembling hell itself.

Almost five years of bloodshed. The Terrans could stand equal with the Cyrvans and fight for themselves. Peace signed, the Algol system declared neutral, left as a monument, a reminder of a long but pointless war and the new name of the system, Abyss.
Tidbits from the "Ask a crew member" Thread
The following tidbits of information below are from characters in the Wings of Dawn universe, so they might contain a personal bias. The links go directly to the post, in which the information was provided.

Biology
* Cyrvan have less tolerance for high g-forces, but their ships possess anti-gravity drives and inertia cancelers.

* Cyrvans are better at handling massive information input than humans.

* Cyrvan couples tend to have between one and three children.

* Due to their long lives, Cyrvans also grow up slower. Most Cyrvans are only fully grown well after the age of 30. Their slow but steady growth also means that they don't have to go through adolescence, unlike Terrans.

* Cyrvan females don't have periods.

* Since no known Cyrvan-Terran hybrid has yet aged beyond 50 years, their life expectancy is unknown, though their growth rate is in between that of Cyrvans and Terrans.

* The appearance of Cyrvan-Terran hybrids depends of the gender of the parents. With a Cyrvan mother the persons appearance is almost indistinguishable from a pure Cyrvan. Hybrids with a Terran mother on the other hand posses looks that carry elements of both species equally, like shorter, but still pointed ears for example, much like the fictional "half-elfs" from ancient Terran fantasy novels.

* As far as physical abilities go, Hybrids seem to be on par with Cyrvans in every espect except physical strength, were they are slightly above Cyrvan average values.

* In terms of piloting skills the tested Hyrids all scorced a bit below the Cyrvan average, which still puts them above Terran pilots. Due to the small number of such people being tested, it's too early to draw any conclusions, since it could just be that the individuals in question didn't have a high aptitude for flying, rather than their racial abilities being a hinderance.

* Some Cyrvans have the ability to perceive glimpses of the future. While the ability is not exclusive to the "winged ones", roughly 40% of them have this ability to some degree. For some of those gifted individuals, this manifests in the ability to look into the immediate future at will, while others have vague premonitions in their dreams. Past experience has shown that the future is not set in stone and that spontaneous individuals are especially hard to predict.

* While already stated in Cyrvan physiology that Cyrvans generally have better reflexes and flexibility while lacking physical strength even more than their counterparts of the same gender, Daniel "Justice" Hawkings who has personally received a Cyrvan melee strike puts it into perspective: "On average, a Terran trained in hand to hand combat will pretty much always win against a Cyrvan. Cyrvan bodies are featherweight (especially the women) and their attacks have no weight behind them."

Planets and Places
* Cyrvadia is 2.73 times the size of Earth, with roughly 40% of the planet being covered in oceans, and has 0.93Gs.

Military Doctrine
* All Cyrvan military assets are bound by law to participate in the defense of Cyrvan space. This law also applies to non-Cyrvan planets under the protection of the CSA.

* The CSA does not commission terrestrial ships and only possesses minimal ground forces, which mainly consists of MCWSes in Mech form. "The Navy was disbanded many many years ago. Ships have no where to hide and are just sitting ducks when orbital bombardment comes into play. We have yet to see the day in which a hostile force sets foot on one of our planets, so until that day happens our ground forces are very likely to remain as small as they are now." - Commodore Isa'emarl Dertanya

* While it is uncommon, the CSA does not prohibit Terrans to enlist into their ranks. The majority of the Terrans in the CSA are armed security guards onboard ships or are stationed planetside. Due to the combination of few Cyrvans willing to and few Terrans being recruited into the CSA, their jobs are well-paid. Terrans are preferred when available for boarding actions, "They are... better at it." - Commodore Isa'emarl Dertanya

* When boarding enemy vessels or repelling enemy boarders, Cyrvan soldiers forgo the use of cumbersome armor and rely solely on personal shield generators for protection.

Government and Law
* "Members from the 10th up to the 6th circles are elected democratically and serve for a period of 10 years. There are no clear written rules for the upper circles. Sometimes they just elect someone from the 6th circle by majority vote. Sometimes, someone gets in by some extraordinary feat and so forth." - Commodore Isa'emarl Dertanya, the election of members into the Circles

* The Cyrvan government allows immigration of Terrans, but due to strict restrictions and the attitude most Cyrvans have towards Terrans, it happens only rarely. "As far as I know you have to be able to understand and speak the basics of our language so you can get around without the use of a translator. You also need to have a understanding of Cyrvan culture and mannerism. I believe they also screen you on your intelligence and I heard being good looking also helps..." - Lt. Crystal Is'va Dertanya

* Despite many Cyrvans not being fully grown by that time, they are considered as adults, once they reach the age of 30 years.

Culture and Society
* During war, sometimes Cyrvans apply a kind of "war paint" to their faces, called Hyalj. Most families have their own design to which some individuals like to add their own personal touch.

* Usually Hyalj are considered little more than adoration, though there are some rare exceptions.

* With some families it represents the role as a warrior or the symbolizes the first kill.

* In Feyraa, the Hyalj have spiritual roots.

* Cyrvan use a unified credit system, name starting with "Ies". Regarded as hard to pronounce for Terrans (or at least for JGASF pilot Misuzu Stella ). Among Terrans it's usually just called Cyrvan Credits (or short CC) and is currently slightly below the Terran UC in value, even after the damage the Terran economy took after the Hertak invasion.

* Cyrvans commonly retire when they are between 700 and 800-years old.

* Among Cyrvans there is only a single religion called "Feryaa". The majority of the Cyrvan race are currently members of this denomination. LSF Lt. Crystal Is'va Dertanya provided the following information about this religion:

"Feryaa is the name of the only religion we have, it has pretty deep roots in our culture and every day life. The Cyrvan government has for the most part always been about 'practical' things in life and is probably one of the least Cyrvan things influenced by Feryaa. I do not know of a lot of atheists."

Technology
* MCWSes eject the entire cockpit as a life pod. The flight helmets are not vacuum-proof by themselves, but incorporate shield generator that can be deployed around the helmet, or even the whole body.

* MCWS flight suit power reserves can sustain a full-body shield for 51 hours, 347 hours for helmet-only shield.

* Currently Cyrvans do not use AI in military applications as far as the Terrans know.

WoDArticleWoD Portal
In the Wings of Dawn universe, Terrans have become a space faring race. Many Terran characters serve as protagonists in the Wings of Dawn story.
Physiology
Thanks to generations of genetic tinkering, Terrans have grown to be a strong and intelligent race. The average life span is around 140 years and signs of old age only start to set in around the 70 year mark. The average male height is between 190-220cm, the average female height tends to vary between 165-200cm.

History
Early history
One of the biggest events in the history of humankind happened in the year 2198 of the old calendar. The year in which Einstein's 'I do not know how the third World War will be fought, but I can tell you what they will use in the Fourth, rocks!' quote was proven wrong. World war three only lasted one day and only one type of warhead was used: Nuclear flavored.

When the dust settled one clear victor emerged, the western continents. Thanks to highly advanced missile interception technology and large scale experimental energy shield generators the west managed to get through a nuclear holocaust with relative minor damage. Reconstruction efforts started almost immediately afterwards and with in a span of 20 years the remains of humanity managed to terraform a nuclear wasteland into rich grasslands.

While it was never clearly recorded who fired the first shot in the war, it is generally claimed that it was planned ahead by the western continents. The most used evidence for these claims are the previously unknown technologies (terraforming, energy shields, altering genetics) and the almost unreal fast recovery of the suffered damage.

Shortly after the war the remaining countries (West Europe, North America, Australia and Japan) united into one nation, the 'united earth union'. A technocratic government was instated and much value was placed on technological advancement. Genetic modifications on unborn babies were also conducted on a large scale, making the new generation highly resistant to diseases, stronger and more intelligent. Certain personality traits that were deemed 'unwelcome to the continued survival of mankind' were also removed. Having your child undergoing genetic modifications was not a choice.

It wasn't long before the now-united mankind started shifting their gaze towards the stars. With new drive technology, the other planets within the Sol system now became within range, and before long humanity set out to terraform and colonize the moon, Mars and later on the moons of Saturn, Neptune and Jupiter.

United Earth Union
The United Earth Union was formed after the Third World War and was both the government and the military for the Terrans for over two hundred years. As a technocracy, it placed great value on technology and science and many consider this the reason why humanity started successfully expanding into space so soon after a world devastating war. The people in ruling positions were selected on skill and talent. The UEU controlled all colonies from the central capital on Earth. The UEU also instated the new calendar based on standard time units instead of the day and night cycle of the Earth.

Eventually however, it grew corrupt over the years when people unfit for positions refused to give up their seat of power and more and more 'unethical' research was being conducted. The UEU was overthrown when the colonies rebelled and reached Sol after a short war. In its last moments it destroyed a lot of evidence of 'genetic crimes.'

The League of Terran Worlds was later set up to replace the UEU. The military force was known as the League Star Forces (see below).

Terran-Cyrvan War
When the Cyrva made first contact with the Terrans in the Algol system they were surprised just how much the Terrans resembled them in appearance. But it also became clear to them that the Terrans are but a young and inexperienced race and needed to be protected against their own destructive tendencies. Likewise the Terrans did not expect that their first contact would be with 'space elves' but welcomed the encounter. Before long, this joy started to turn into irritation. The Cyrva were looking down on them and soon started suggesting that it would be best for the LSF to disarm themselves and let the CSA handle the defenses of the Terrans. The Terrans refused and in response mobilized and send a large fleet into the Algol system and claimed the system as their own. This caused the Cyrva to decide that a quick military victory would be prudent to show the Terrans just how powerless they are.

The LSF fleet consisted of 7,000 capital ships and over 18,000 fighters, well organized and in formation for a 'line vs line' type of battle. The CSA entered the Algol system with 4,500 capships and around 12,000 MCWS. What the Terrans did not know at that time, was that only 750 of those ships would be actually invading. The CSA opened the battle by subspace jumping behind the rearguard of the LSF and taking out the command ships of the fleet. This caused a lot of confusion among the LSF lines, they still had a large CSA force in front of them around the node and they did not receive any orders to turn around and engage the fleet behind them. The attacking CSA fleet wasted no time and did another jump, this time to the outer left flank of the LSF line and started destroying the LSF ships there from a flanking position. After the situation became clear, Rear Admiral Zego assumed command of the fleet and ordered all ships to engage the attacking CSA fleet. By this time however, the LSF had already lost over a thousand ships and three thousand fighters, whereas the CSA had only suffered a few MCWS losses.

In response to the LSF now actively trying to engage them, the CSA fleet started backing up, keeping the LSF ships just inside their own range while staying out of range from the LSF heavy weaponry. Furious, Rear Admiral Zego ordered all ships to hold position and ordered a massive fighter and bomber strike. In response the CSA fleet also held position and launched their MCWS. Zego was aiming for this moment and ordered all capital ships forward again and to continue forward 'until you can see the white of their eyes'. This maneuver was successful, the LSF managed to close in and did not allow the CSA fleet to get away again. However what Zego could not anticipate was just how vastly superior CSA technology was. The CSA point defense weapons ripped through LSF ships like a knife through hot butter, while the LSF heavy turrets could hardly penetrate the CSA shielding. The LSF fleet started breaking up and retreated back to the Lyrae node.

The end result: The CSA lost four frigates, two destroyers and one cruiser was damaged. 500 MCWS were lost. The LSF lost 5000 capital ships, of which 3000 were disabled and taken prisoner, and over 6000 fighters.

The CSA then continued on into the Lyrae node, easily crushing the blockade that was put up in a hurry and seized control of the system. The Cyrva predicted that the Terrans had no more than three systems under their control. The fleet was split, one was send to the Tauri system, the other to the Librae system. Both encountered fierce resistance but eventually the CSA ensured control of these systems too. After a whole year of fighting, the CSA fleets entered Sol and Harcon. It not only seemed like the Terrans had far more systems than initially thought but also like they were rapidly producing new weapon systems and more effective ship designs. The CSA fleets received little in the terms of reinforcements and were slowly but surely starting to lose fighting power. One more year passed, Terran causalities and losses numbered in the thousands, the CSA fleet was down to 457 capital ships. Each ship they lost caused a cheer in the LSF fleets as they had realized that the invading fleet received little to no new reinforcements. Some ships even had a counter to keep track. The Cyrvan public opinion was starting to turn more and more against this invasion. Perhaps the Terrans were not as immature as a race as they had thought? Hearing stories from families that had lost their loved ones also did little good for the support of this war.

The Cyrvan fleet commander, Fer'opal, started realizing that in order to reach the Terran homeworld he would need the fleet currently fighting in the Harcon system as well and ordered both fleets to regroup in the Lyrae system. The LSF took this as a sign that the enemy was on the run and launched full scale counter attacks, retaking Librae and Tauri and putting immense pressure on the CSA fleet in Lyrae. Before Fer'opal could launch a counter attack of his own however, he received orders to return to CSA space. A more diplomatic approach would be taken, the Terrans had shown that they would not need the Cyrva to watch over them but that they could stand shoulder to shoulder with them.

The LSF followed them through to Algol and initiated a fierce orbital bombardment on the military outpost the CSA had established on Algol prime. Devastating the planet as the crust was broken on several places. Turning it into a hellish place of lava and brimstone.

After almost five years of space warfare, peace was signed. The Algol system was declared neutral space and renamed to Abyss. It was to be left as a monument, a reminder of a long but pointless war.

Today
League Star Forces
The League Star Forces is the military branch of the current Terran government, the League of Terran Worlds. The LTW is a confederation of all Terran controlled systems. The biggest difference with the UEU is that each colony is now allowed to make its own laws and is free from the control of some far away government. Each planet has its government elected by democratic means. The prime minister of each planet serves as a representative for the central LTW meetings.

Each system is responsible for building and maintaining a fleet, which is put at the disposal of the LSF. LSF high command consists of a fleet admiral of each system. The Intelligence branch of the LSF consists mostly of people from the Lyrae system and is known for being highly skilled at its job. Fleet commanders have learned that they can usually trust the info they receive from Intelligence.

Joint Guardian Angel Strike Force
The Joint Guardian Angel Strike Force is a joint project between the Terran and Cyrvan navies. Students from both races receive their training at Abyss station and after five years will end up serving on a Guardian Angel class carrier, which will be the center piece of the new battlegroup. The program is not aimed to increase the fighting power of both races but to encourage cooperation, interaction and friendship between each other, so that both races will understand each other better and that a war will never break out again.

Each year there will be a new Guardian Angel class carrier for the next class of graduating students. The 1st JGASF has been assigned to LSF space. The 2nd will be assigned to CSA space, the 3rd will be assigned to LSF space again and so forth.

Abyss station is a large space station orbiting the wasteland of Abyss Prime. It has design traits of both Terran and Cyrvan architecture. Functions as the primary trading hub between the two races. While it has a strong shield generator, it is only armed with a few point defense systems.

Predator is an official short story written by Fred Saberhagen and published by Interplay. It it not known if it is considered canon, though it is generally not regarded as canon because there are many inconsistencies between the four stories published by Interplay and the game itself. Volition does not seem to have been involved with the stories, either. However, there are no confirmations from Volition itself.

The following is a repost of Saberhagen's short story Predator.
Predator
Talavera sometimes thought that being on this kind of a patrol was in some ways a lot like hunting, walking the woods with a sporting weapon under your arm. But of course there were many other ways in which this business was a whole lot different.

Talavera was a radioman-gunner, and occupied the rear seat of the two-man recon ship. Whenever he raised his eyes from his own display panel and controls, he could look over Captain Colby’s shoulder, and when Colby happened to turn round in his combat chair, Talavera could see the captain’s face. At the moment, their small craft was a good many light years from Earth, trying to spy on a bigger Vasudan military vessel.

As it happened, Talavera’s instruments were the first to pick up the mysterious object, at a range of almost a thousand kilometers, and he called the captain’s attention to it at once. A minute later, the main detectors had locked on, and the onboard computer had matched the unknown object’s radar profile with that of a known type of Vasudan lifeboat.

"I’m going to get a little closer," said the captain tersely.

And when Colby had maneuvered to within ten kilometers of the object, there was no longer any doubt that what they had found was indeed a Vasudan lifeboat.

"Can’t have come here by itself," Colby muttered on the private intercom.

"No sir," Talavera agreed. It was obvious that a sizable enemy ship, almost certainly the one they had been looking for, was somewhere nearby, or had been recently.

The Terran recon craft was prowling on the outskirts of a solar system devoid of naturally habitable planets. But interspersed with the system’s lifeless planetary children were several thick belts of asteroids, many of the orbiting bodies not much more than dust particles. With this kind of configuration, the system offered endless opportunities for ships of any size to hide. The Vasudans were known to have done some mining here, for certain rare and important minerals, and a big part of the Terran recon mission was to learn more about that operation.

Now, at Colby’s orders, Talavera worked with swift delicacy to establish subspace radio contact with their home base, exchanging signals with an effective speed many times that of light. Breaking radio silence was always somewhat risky, though coding and carefully beamed transmission minimized the danger. But the discovery of an enemy lifeboat seemed to offer such a special opportunity that the captain considered it necessary to inform the people back at base, even before investigating further. The war between Vasuda and the Galactic Terran Alliance had now dragged on for almost fourteen standard Terran years, and by now each side was in some ways well known to the other; but the actual capture of any substantial amount of hardware was an uncommon event. And the fact of a lifeboat suggested the possibility of being able to take prisoners, and prisoners were always valuable.

Presently, the decoded voice of a Terran operations officer sounded from a speaker in the recon ship’s cabin. "You have to investigate, of course. But watch yourselves. Could be some kind of a booby trap, or trick."

"Yeah, thanks for nothing," Colby muttered aloud, to Talavera and to himself. Then, opening for transmission again, he responded officially: "Acknowledge, Base. Preparing for EVA."

Moving at the captain’s orders, Talavera put on his space suit, armed himself with a handgun--the only portable weapon available-- and went out through the airlock. A minute later he was approaching the enemy lifeboat, a stubby cylinder about ten meters long. As far as Terran instruments could tell, it wasn’t emitting any kind of beacon. There was no visible lock on the outer door of its airlock, only a simple handle by which, he supposed, it could be opened.

Using tightbeam communicator, Talavera reported on the situation to the captain, who was of course also watching through a small video camera mounted on the radioman-gunner’s shoulder. Colby had the recon ship’s modest armament focused on the lifeboat from a couple of kilometers away.

The next step, of course, was to look inside it. Talavera got his orders.

Pistol drawn, he went in. He could tell when the inner door of the lock opened that there was comfortable gravity inside, and the interior, virtually all one compartment, was nicely pressurized. But he kept his helmet on, and its airmikes picked up the sound of ragged breathing, from a single pair of lungs.

The cramped space he had now entered was dimly lit, and seemed to be almost filled with bunks. But only one of them was occupied. Talavera pointed his handgun, then slowly lowered it again.

There was only one Vasudan in the lifeboat, and he was badly wounded. There were bloodstains, some old, some fresh-looking, on the clothing and the bunk. The figure in the bunk had two arms, two legs, two eyes and a mouth, arranged in a basic body plan not too different from that of Terran humanity. But, as was normal for his race, the Vasudan’s skin was the texture of leather, mottled brown, and his four limbs appeared to be all bone and sinew where they protruded from its clothing.

The figure turned its head and looked at Talavera, and raised one empty hand in a feeble gesture, that might have been intended as a greeting.

Being taken prisoner was not necessarily the worst thing that could happen in this war--certainly not, if you were a Vasudan.

Moments later, the man in the bunk spoke to Talavera. "I have been trying to reach you. To reach your ship." The Vasudan’s voice came through clearly, processed into crisply enunciated Terran Standard by the little translator he was wearing, part of which was visible in the form of a small microphone projecting near his mouth. The translated and reprocessed mechanical voice sounded incongruously strong and healthy. "I have a message of transcendent importance for all your people."

"Sure you do," said Talavera immediately. He knew that the Vasudan translating devices worked both ways, and as soon as the words had left his mouth, he wondered if they would be rendered to his prisoner as a sincere expression of agreement, the exact opposite of his intention. But on second thought he supposed it didn’t matter in the least.

"Take it easy," he added. "I’ll be right back." Nodding to the Vasudan in what he hoped was a reassuring way, he turned and went back to the airlock, because he thought that from there it would be easier to confer with the captain. Their exchange of words was brief.

It would have been ideal if the recon ship could have towed the whole lifeboat home, but that was obviously impossible. Talavera hastily scanned the lifeboat’s interior for any small objects that might be of military value, but could identify nothing.

"Of transcendent importance," repeated the Vasudan when Talavera came back to him. Then he added: "Our former modes of conduct are inadequate."

Whatever. "All right, buddy, I’m not going to hurt you. Not as long as you admit that for you the war’s all over." And Talavera helped the wounded prisoner get his space helmet on before he tried to move him. He was able to leave the translator in place.

"The war is over for us all," the crisp mechanical voice responded, between intervals of ragged breathing. "The cleansing force of the ancients comes upon us."

Well, the translators weren’t perfect, Talavera reminded himself, after pondering that last remark for a moment. At least he didn’t think it sounded like anything a man would say who was determined to go on fighting.

The prisoner made no objection to being moved to the Terran ship, and the transfer was soon accomplished, the abandoned lifeboat left behind. Atmosphere and gravity inside the Terran ship were close enough to Vasudan standards for the prisoner to feel as comfortable as his wounds would let him.

While Captain Colby remained in the pilot’s seat, ready to take immediate action at the first sign of renewed enemy presence nearby, Talavera got the prisoner established in his own bunk, brought out the medical kit, and set about trying to bandage the worst of the alien body’s wounds. Terran and Vasudan were biologically similar in many ways, but also different enough so that Talavera didn’t want to attempt any additional treatment. If it had been an Earthman he was patching up, he wouldn’t have been optimistic about the patient’s chances for survival.

While Colby concentrated on getting his ship moving again, the Vasudan continued the conversation--actually it was more of a monologue--he had begun when he first laid eyes on Talavera. He kept talking, despite his injuries, and what must have been additional pain induced by Talavera’s clumsy treatment. He introduced himself as Tak--at least that was the way his name sounded, coming through translation. And he kept reminding the two Terrans that he had surrendered deliberately--at least that was how he saw the situation.

"Why did I do that? you must be asking yourselves."

"Because you had no choice?" asked Colby over his shoulder. In spite of all the other demands on his attention, maneuvering the ship and watching for the enemy, the captain was trying to listen with half an ear to what was going on in the cabin behind him.

Tak ignored the comment. His attitude, even flattened out and helpless as he was, seemed to say that he hadn’t come their ship to listen to them, but to preach. "And the answer is this: because there is something of overwhelming importance that must be explained to all the Terran people, on all their worlds. I come before you as the Hammer of Light."

"What was that?" asked Colby, frowning. "He comes before us as what?"

"Don’t know what he means, sir." Talavera had now returned to his own combat chair, sitting before his own controls and panel display. As gunner and radioman, he had plenty of things to keep him busy too. "Sounded like ‘Hammer of Light.’"

Time passed while Tak, strapped into Talavera’s bunk, kept gibbering about some great new Galactic force, before which all other beings must bow down. The "ancients," whoever they were, had known about this entity, but modern races had forgotten. Talavera was sure he heard the word "Shiva" once or twice. All his own memory could connect with that word was a vague image of some ancient Earthly god.

"Does he have a fever?" Colby asked his crewman, after a while. "The way he’s babbling."

"Damned if I could tell, captain. If he was an Earthman, I’d say no. Skin didn’t feel that hot."

The Terrans were were not bothering to restrict their talk to private intercom, and some of what they were saying to each other must have come through to the prisoner. He began to speak more slowly now, with pauses as if for thought, as if to refute the charge that he was babbling. But whether what he was saying actually made more sense was hard for Talavera to tell.

But presently, what Tak was telling his captors began to sound like important news indeed. He said his wounds were not the result of combat against another Terran ship, nor of an accident.

Now Talavera was paying attention to every word, though he kept his face turned toward his panel. Now and then the captain’s head swiveled round, and he glanced back at the occupied bunk. Unless Tak’s whole story was indeed a fever dream, it began to sound like there had indeed been serious mutiny aboard the Vasudan. A mutiny connected with, triggered by a dispute over, the same matter of overwhelming importance that Tak kept talking about. The immediate cause of rebellion had been the failure of some of the men on board--including, it sounded like, the spacecraft commander and most of the officers--to see and acknowledge the glorious truth that the Hammer of Light proclaimed to them.

Captain Colby turned his head again, caught his crewman’s eye, and made a gesture indicating that he wanted to communicate on intercom. When they had both switched over to throat mikes and headsets, and the prisoner, and the prisoner’s translator, would presumably be unable to hear their conversation, the captain said. "Talavera, this could be very big news. Better get on the horn to Base again."

"Yessir." With every reason to believe that a powerful enemy was somewhere near, normal procedure called for maintaining radio silence. But the information now being conveyed by the prisoner sounded important enough to make the risk of signaling worthwhile. Whatever the true nature of Tak’s transcendent force of Light might be, whether any such thing actually existed or not, the report that some Vasudan spacers were ready to mutiny over it was news of the first significance.

Presently the voice of the operations officer at base was coming through again. "Captain Colby, can you induce your prisoner to talk some more?"

"I don’t think you understand, Base. So far, getting him to talk has not been a problem. Getting him to shut up might become one, if he keeps jabbering like this."

"Are you recording what he says?"

Colby glanced back at Talavera, who shook his head. "Negative, Base. We haven’t been, so far. We’re both of us already trying to do about three things at once."

Just flying the ship, in this locale so thick with dust and rocks, was anything but routine. Before Colby could dash for home with his prisoner, he had to maneuver to the proper subspace node, and that meant some groping and jockeying in normal space; his autopilot could accomplish most of this maneuvering, but the captain had to keep an eye on the process. Talavera was fully alert also, but while going through the routines of his job he had time also to talk to the prisoner.

When Talavera felt able to look away from his panel for a little while, he turned his head and asked the prisoner: "So, tell me again, Tak, what happened on your ship? I’m not sure I understood you the first time. How’d you get hurt?"

The wounded man seemed to be trying, and what he said was at least consistent with his earlier story. Not all Vasudans, apparently, were willing to see the Light, obvious as its truth must be to all right-thinking beings. Some kind of mutiny had indeed flared up on his warship--the Hammer of Light rebels had been in a distinct minority, and had failed to take over the vessel. The most they had been able to achieve had been the freeing of one of their number in a lifeboat, to carry on the work of spreading the all-important message.

Seeing that he had the full attention of one of his captors, at least for the moment, Tak kept emphasizing, trying to pound the point home with feeble gestures, that this transcendent Galactic force--Shiva, again--foretold by the Ancient Ones, was even now present, or very near.

"You mean near us in space? Near this ship, this very moment?"

"That is what I mean. But the fools on my own ship would not believe me when I tried to warn them." And there Tak had to pause for a spasm of ragged breathing.

At the captain’s urging, Talavera attempted some interrogation on what seemed to the Terrans to be more practical matters. But questioning Tak about the size of the Vasudan vessel from which he had escaped did little good; it was like pulling teeth to get him to discuss its type, armament, or its original mission. His conversation was almost totally confined to one subject. But virtually everything he said confirmed, at least indirectly, the existence of serious conflict dividing the crew of the Vasudan warship.

Tak himself was a fanatical member of what seemed to be a religious-philosophical sect, calling themselves something that translated as the Hammer of Light, that had to some extent broken away from the rest of the Vasudan race.

And again and again that mysterious name kept coming up: something, or someone, whose name came through the squawker in translation as Shiva, or the Shivans. The position taken by the extremist, Hammer of Light heretics was that the Shivans should not, must not, be resisted.

"Do you know, Terrans, anything of the ancient legends of my people?"

"Not a whole lot," admitted Captain Colby, cautiously.

There was nothing Tak wanted more than to educate his captors on that subject. Pausing now and then for a sip of water, he talked on. Talavera and the captain learned of the fatalistic legends, the stories of the Ancient Ones. Much of what the Vasudan said was obscure to his audience, and remained so even when Tak tried to explain. But one idea was coming through more or less clearly now: that of an avenging power or force, by which the Galaxy sought to keep its subspace levels free of intruding vermin. "And Shiva is very near. Shiva was almost upon my ship when I left it."

"The vermin is us, I suppose?" Colby asked over his shoulder. "Terrans in general?"

"Terrans and Vasudans too," said the clear, energetic voice from Tak’s mechanical squawker. The wounded Vasudan seemed to think no better of his own people than he did of their long-time opponents in the war.

Colby and Talavera weren’t even entirely sure that they were getting Tak’s message straight--there might be problems in translation, or their prisoner might indeed be delirious. Quite possibly both conditions were in effect.

Talavera tried to sum it up. "So. You mutinied because you thought your captain was wrong, in his determination to resist this Shiva--whatever it is, exactly?"

"The commander of my ship was wrong even to try to get away from Shiva. Shiva will find him yet . . . " There was more, compelling in a way because it was so repetitious.

Talavera was getting the definite impression that their Vasudan prisoner had studied Terran history and mythology. He might be babbling, out of his head at times, but he wasn’t ignorant. Tak knew who Earthly Shiva was, and thought his character a good match for the legendary entity that had haunted the Vasudans from the epoch of their most ancient records.

The clear voice of the wounded man went on and on, militant, almost hypnotic. Talavera was beginning to get an eerie feeling that, in a way, he and Captain Colby were the prisoners.

And now, the area of most dangerous maneuvering within the system had been reached. "The node is near now," muttered the captain. "Just a little farther--"

And that was the point at which the Vasudan ship attacked. As the captain feared, they had probably been waiting in ambush at the node.

Talavera thought the Vasudan vessel was almost certainly the one from which Tak had defected; but whether it was the same or not made little difference, as it came hurtling out of a dust cloud’s concealment toward Colby’s ship.

For just a moment before the enemy struck, Talavera could hear it coming. The sound of a ship’s passage through airless space might be heard aboard another ship, through the medium of the wave of virtual particles that a passage at such speed evoked.

The interior of the little recon craft was suddenly filled with slamming impacts, deafening noise, the blinding flare of weapons, brutal acceleration despite the buffering effect of interior gravity. Colby fought his ship as best he could, Talavera used skillfully such weapons as he had available, but in moments it was obvious that they were about to be overwhelmed by superior Vasudan force. At least there was only one enemy ship, and it must have been weakened somewhat by internal combat, that had cost it at least part of its crew. But it was still too strong for the lightly armed Terran recon craft. Nothing that Talavera or Colby could throw at the Vasudan made a dent in its defenses.

Again, the great, slamming impacts of near misses and minor hits.

The Terran’s hull had been breached once, and Talavera could feel a trickle of blood coming down his forehead. It was lucky for him and for the ship that he did not lose consciousness, because fragments from the same blast had injured the captain too. Colby was slumping in his seat.

Fortunately, the hull was self-sealing, and the ship still functional. They were not dead yet, though they were very near it.

Colby, before passing out, managed to break contact with the enemy, but he couldn’t get far away enough to hide, and his situation was now hopeless.

"Captain. Captain?" Talavera tried for a while on intercom, and then gave up.

Seeing that the spacecraft commander had been seriously wounded, Talavera was able to activate an emergency set of dual controls, and from his gunner’s position assumed command of all ship’s systems. Colby, still strapped into his combat chair, was drifting in and out of consciousness, but part of the time he could at least watch what was going on.

On his screens Talavera could see the enemy, the Vasudan destroyer, once more coming after them for the kill.

In his desperation, Talavera manipulated his subspace radio equipment in such a way as to broadcast freespace vibrations, at top volume and all across the available frequency spectrum. The recon ship was letting out the loudest howl that it could utter.

Colby had regained consciousness in time to observe his radioman’s action. "What the hell are you doing, Talavera? Give me back the con--" And by using the master switch that was on his panel, the controls of course were his for the taking.

But the captain’s protest was in vain, his action came too late to interfere with what his crewman had just done.

Moments later, just as the little recon ship was about to be destroyed, a ship of a kind that neither Terran had ever seen before responded, bursting out of subspace through what appeared to be a red hole in the fabric of reality. The captain was on intercom again, shouting something, but Talavera didn’t know what, he couldn’t listen. All he could do was watch, as the incredible shape went pouncing--there seemed no other word for it--on the lesser Vasudan predator that had been about to blast the Terran recon vessel out of existence.

Talavera might be temporarily paralyzed by what he saw, but Colby wasn’t. He had now reclaimed command, and the stranger’s miraculous intervention gave him the second or two he needed to microjump in intra-system distance, getting to a node that allowed him to escape at interstellar speed a few moments later. In moments, the strange conflict they had glimpsed was billions of kilometers behind.

Colby slumped again.

Talavera got the controls back. This time, since the captain’s override had already been used once, it was necessary for him to stumble his half-dazed way over to the captain’s position and flip the main switch back again.

Then the wounded gunner moved unsteadily over to his bunk, now stained with Vasudan blood, and looked down at the wounded occupant. "You were right," he said to Tak. "Shiva was coming for us. Shiva came. I watched it take your ship."

"Blessed be the Light," breathed Tak.

"But," said Talavera, "Shiva’s not getting this one." He put out a hand and grabbed a nearby stanchion, to emphasize which ship he meant.

Tak looked at him. "Then why did you call it?" And at the same time, the voice of the wounded captain sounded from behind him. Colby had managed to rally one more time.

"Talavera. What the hell did you think you were doing there, sending a beacon for them? I saw that transmission, high-volume, in the clear. I could charge you with treason. Mutiny."

Talavera dragged himself back to his own seat, where he slumped down wearily. "I wasn’t giving up, captain. I was hoping to get help. Didn’t figure it was much of a chance, but it was the only chance I could see. And I think it worked."

Colby was looking at him blankly.

The gunner sighed, and tried again. "Ever spend much time out in the woods, captain? No, not where you come from. I have, though." He paused, letting his gaze drift around the cabin, looking for the words he needed. "Small animal, hunted by a big one. Almost always the little one keeps as quiet as it can, the same as it tries to stay out of sight.

"But when it knows it’s almost caught--I mean right at the last damn moment, when the pearly gates are yawning--or the big pearly teeth--then there’s just one more move that it can make. That’s when it gives up on keeping quiet, and saving breath, and lets out the loudest scream it’s got.

"There’s a reason it does that: there just might be an even bigger predator somewhere near; and if there is, and the big one hears the scream, it knows there’s game on hand. And if the big one comes on the scene before the screamer’s dead--well, it’s a whole new game, and just maybe the little screamer can get away.

"Captain, after what our guy here told us, about Shiva and all that, I thought there was a fair chance that we had a bigger predator nearby. Well, maybe only a small chance. But better than none." And he looked at his commanding officer hopefully.

But the captain was not going to understand, though his eyes were open and he looked thoughtful. With a chill running along the back of his neck, Talavera realized that the captain had just died, before his radioman could learn whether or not his explanation had been believed.

As for the Vasudan . . .

Turning his gaze in that direction, Talavera found it practically impossible to read emotion on the alien face, any more than he could hear it in Tak’s voice as it came through the translator. Tak drew a deep breath and asked him: "Where is this ship now?"

"On its way home," Talavera said, and watched another indecipherable change spread over the dying Vasudan’s face.

Eventually he did manage to raise home base again on subspace radio, and let them know what had been happening. Again, he went through a brief explanation of his survival maneuver.

After a pause, the operations officer at the other end commented: "Evidently your tactic worked."

Talavera wondered if they were only humoring the distant victim of injury and battle shock, speaking to him soothingly. In imagination he could hear the dialogue in Operations: Agree to anything he says. He said he had a head wound. Just get him to bring the ship back to base. After turning the transmitter off he repeated to himself: "Any chance is better than none."

"It’s finished me," said Tak’s translator, into the quiet cabin, and fell silent. Talavera got up and went to look over the Vasudan, and made sure that he too was dead.

Turning his body awkwardly in the cramped space, he made his way back to his combat chair. Controls in hand, he could feel reasonably confident that he was on his way home.

Of course neither he nor Colby had ever got around to recording anything their prisoner had said. Bringing in a dead Vasudan would offer some support for Talavera’s story. Not nearly as much, of course, as he might have got from a live witness, an intelligent being who could have given corroborating evidence, preaching his gospel of surrender.

Now Talavera could only hope that he would be believed when he got back to base--if he got back to base, for it was by no means certain that his damaged ship was going to make it. And he could only hope that if he lived to get there, they wouldn’t put him in the ward of raving psychos. Because he was going to have to stick to his story, and the story was that something else was out there in deep space, something large and terrible, powerful enough to crunch up tough Vasudan battle craft like pretzels.

Shiva.

If the Terran Alliance was going to survive, its leaders were going to have to believe Talavera, when he came to warn them. What they would be able to do then, how they might try to deal with Shiva, Talavera couldn’t guess. But before they did anything they would have to be convinced.

If only some other Terran spacer, somewhere else, could also catch a glimpse of Shiva’s face, and bring home the word . . .

Tidbits from the "Ask a crew member" thread
The following tidbits of information below are from characters in the Wings of Dawn universe, so they might contain a personal bias. The links go directly to the post, in which the information was provided.

Government and Law
• Despite having a dark history with the UEU's genetic engineering, the LTW has not outlawed it yet.

Culture and Society
• There is a growing movement among Terrans attempting to recreate racial traits such as different skin colors, something that was forcefully engineered out of the human race by the UEU.

• The Terran currency is the "United Currency", or "UC". Originally introduced by the hated UEU, the LTW decided to retain the UC for its practicality after it's demise. Currently, UC values slightly above that of the Cyrvan Credits, even after the damage the Terran economy took during the Hertak invasion.

Military Doctrine
• "In the LSF, each fleet has its own hand to hand combat trainings and styles. Each effective and deadly in their own right. However none of these martial arts have ever accounted for the possibility of facing a four-armed lizard that has twice your physical strength and a completely different center of gravity. Or an overgrown praying mantis that has three times your arm length in attack range. We're currently trying to figure out how to best train our combat personnel for these engagements." - LSF Lt. Commander Daniel "Justice" Hawkings on training of LSF soldiers

• "LSF boarding forces wear Mk. IV powered armor suits with personal plasma shield generator attachments. For weaponry, they are usually equipped with Ion Particle rifles (think of a really scaled down VX-02a) and Gauss pistols. Some detachments prefer using physical combat shields and/or the heavier but less mobile Mk.IV-D heavy armor suits with the Ion Particle scatter rifles." - LSF Lt. Commander Daniel "Justice" Hawkings on equipment of LSF soldiers

Technology
• Most LSF strikecraft drop the canopy design in favor of a fully-enclosed cockpit, such as the standard Cleo-132 cockpit - Equipped with 3 monitors capable of resolutions up to 32768x32768, 80x zoom, multi-spectral display (infrared, ultraviolet, etc.), multi-target tracking and fire/radar warning receivers.

• Ironically even with such an advanced cockpit, there is no bright light filtering that can potentially blind pilots.

• Terran ships are capable of direct atmospheric re-entry and atmospheric jumps after making complex, time-consuming calculations, while blind atmospheric jumps risk ship destruction.

• The LSF does not use AIs in military applications, but a near-sentient AI in the Io Shipyards manages every detail of ship construction.

Timeline
*NC0000 - Start of the new calendar
*NC0025 - All of the suitable moons in Sol terraformed and colonized
*NC0027 - IO shipyards constructed
*NC0030 - The first starlance discovered
*NC0038 - After intensive research, a jump drive that is capable of entering the Starlance is developed.
*NC0040 - First successful manned jump through the Starlance to the Tauri system.
*NC0045 - The third ship that is Starlance jump-capable, the UEU Explorer, is missing after its jump to Tauri.
*NC0052 - An outpost is established on Tauri II and soon after a colony is established, marking the first permanent Terran presence outside of Sol.
*NC0053-70 - More Starlances are discovered. In this time frame colonies in the Polaris, Grens, Harcon, Silva, Lyrae, Librae and Phoenicis are established, greatly expanding the human sphere of influence and giving the human race nearly infinite resources.
----
*NC0071 - The colonies are starting to feel oppressed by the Earth-centered government. Genetic modifications are still being enforced despite the fact that the human population now numbers in the billions. The cry for reform becomes louder each day. The UEU slowly grows corrupt over the years and outright rejects all proposals involving reformation of the government.
----
*NC0072 - Fed up with being treated as second-rate citizens, having to abide by old laws and the UEU government dead set in its ways, Librae and Phoenicis declared open revolt. The Silva shipyards supported the rebellion in secret by providing the rebels with the latest cutting-edge fighters and weapons.
----
*NC0073 - The UEU is slow to respond to the uprising and soon starts to lose control of the situation. The UEU sends a fleet to each revolting system in a slow response, but half the fleets were already lost, due to defectors and ambushes staged by mercenaries from Harcon. Encouraged by the success of the rebellion, Tauri, Harcon and Polaris each joined the revolt.
----
*NC0074 - After a short but bloody engagement in Sol between UEU loyalists and rebel ships, the United Earth Union's reign came to an end. From its ashes arose a new government, the League of Terran Worlds, that would no longer function with Earth as its center point. All of the Terran fleets were united under the LTW's military arm, the League Space Forces.
----
*NC0077 - The LSF is going strong, the economy is in top health, political reforms have raised the morale of the population and new technological advances are being made. A scouting fleet in the newly discovered Algol system encounters ships of unknown design. First contact was established with the Cyrva.
----
*NC0078-83 - Terran-Cyrvan war
*NC0084 - Peace was signed, Algol renamed to Abyss as a monument of the pointless war.
*NC0085 - Relations between the two races improved at a rapid pace after the war was over, the main reasons were that the CSA did not attempt planetary invasions, disabling LSF capital ships instead of destroying them and that Cyrvans and Terrans closely resembled each other in appearance. Before long the two races signed an alliance.
----
*NC0086 - New colonies were established in the Vega system.
*NC0089 - Ravi colonized.
*NC0090 - Alpha Draconis discovered.
*NC0094 - The idea of a joint space academy was proposed.
*NC0096 - After two years of heavy debate, the idea is rejected in its current form.
*NC0102 - Alpha Draconis colonized.
*NC0128 - The alliance continues going strong and the idea of a joint starbase and academy project is once again proposed.
*NC0131 - The project is accepted by both parties and the construction of Abyss Station gets the green light.
*NC0135 - Construction of Abyss Station completed, work on the Academy section begins.
*NC0138 - Construction of the Joint Academy on Abyss Station completes, but disagreements in teaching methods lead to delays.
*NC0140 - The Joint Academy finally opens its doors.

Music tracks in FreeSpace are determined by the music tables. Mission designers can use the Mission Specs editor (Shift-N) to set the music track that the mission will play. In-mission music is dynamic: it changes depending on in-mission events. This is the list of such events:
*Arrival of enemy ships (can be disabled for certain ships in FRED)
*Arrival of friendly ships (can be disabled for certain ships in FRED)
*Completion of mission goals (can be disabled for certain mission goals in FRED)
*Player death
*Ambient (when enemy is either not present, or are well outside firing range)
*Battle

Apart from in-mission music are briefing music tracks that are played only in command and mission briefings. They can be set in FRED through the Briefing editor (Shift-B). Briefings are limited to one track per mission; command briefings share the same track as the briefing. In FRED 2 Open, the Fiction Viewer uses its own music.

Furthermore, there are three music tracks for debriefings: "Success", "Average", and "Failure". "Success" is played if all mission objectives are met and the player is allowed to progress in the campaign. "Failure" is played if the player is not allowed to progress in the campaign. "Average" is played if the player is allowed to progress, but has not satisfied all primary and secondary objectives. Recent builds of FRED 2 Open allow mission designers to select which tracks are played under each of these three circumstances through the Debriefing editor (Shift-D). The engine had been capable of this since at least 3.6.10, but FRED 2 had yet to integrate it into its GUI.

Lastly, each main hall has its own music track. These tracks can also be used in command and mission briefings.

FreeSpace Open supports much finer control of in-game music, allowing mission designers to specifically tailor musical scores to the events and tempo of a mission. Soundtracks can now be changed during the mission when desired, and any track can also be played at any time (including briefing and mainhall tracks, or any tracks placed in the music folder). This is possible through several new SEXPs:

*change-soundtrack
*play-sound-from-table
*play-sound-from-file

Retail supports only *.wav files, but FreeSpace Open also supports *.ogg files.

List of tracks
Most tracks were created by Dan Wentz, who composed the majority of the music for both 1 and 2. Some 1 cutscene scores were collaborations with Steven von Kampen, a composer and sound designer from Noiz Audio who was hired for the project.
Other
Some music that was created for the games but not included in the game files was released to the community in a music pack. The pack included some remastered versions of game tracks, as well as several unused outtakes, cutscene scores and trailer music. The pack also contained a humorous bonus track, "Bite Me".

The pack can be downloaded from this thread on Hard Light Productions.

Remixes
In early 2012, composer Dan Wentz revisited his old work, creating remixed versions of many familiar tracks from both games. The remixes were published on the internet on audio distribution website SoundCloud. Dan Wentz himself also visited the Hard Light Productions forums and created a thread entitled FreeSpace Music Remixes dedicated to the subject. The remixes remain in progress, and plans have been announced to release the remixed tracks into a format suitable for in-game use.

Someone with the FS2 reference bible should look at the cutscene script and see what this destroyer is called. I have a copy lying around on my hard drive, I think, I just can't find it on my PC or on the Net. Mustang19

I'm not even sure if there is an FS2 ref bible. People call it the Legion because of a certain interview with [V] staff. [V] staff confirmed that it was not the Galatea. Someone asked if it was the Legion, and [V] staff said "Call it that if you want." So there's no real certainty about the Legion, unless you take that vague answer. - Snail

Altered it to fit with the story as it was told by Eishmto, feel free to change it back or fix further; working from memory. - ngtm1r

Fixed the grammar, but the substance of the story remains the same. I just wish we had some Volition Watch article or something to link to. Doesn't anyone remember when and where this meeting with V took place, and isn't there some kind of transcript? Mustang19

Non-canon material on 'canon' articles
Setting aside the issue of where 'Legion' comes from anyway: cool, look, a mod note on a canon article! Can I go add a Blue Planet box on the Carthage? (I don't think this is a good idea or a good precedent to set.) General Battuta 15:02, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
*Wait, the BP Carthage already has an article here. - TopAce 16:32, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
**You're right, it does, but I'm just worried about articles that mix canon material with non-canon stuff, even if clearly marked. For example, it'd be pretty irritating for every single FreeSpace 2 beam weapon to have a Blue Planet tech description in a red box. Or, in this example, for the GTD Carthage's entry in the FS2 ship list to have the Blue Planet entry included in a non-canon box. Maybe I'm jumping at shadows? General Battuta 22:07, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
***I'm with Battuta on separating canon and non-canon material. Apart from being a little distracting, it also encourages the behaviour of people like ITA Master (among others) who decide to go and add their non-canon stuff to canon pages. I also think we should seriously consider completely redoing articles like Terran-Vasudan War which are almost entirely made up of non-canon stuff, despite ostensibly covering a 'canon' subject. N.B. I remember having a hilariously awesome flamewar with Mobius over this very topic a while back. Good times. :) - Snail 02:54, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
Snailhttps://wiki.hard-light.net/index.php?title=TC-Meson_Bomb&diff=38336TC-Meson Bomb2012-04-19T15:28:33Z
Snail: /* Statistics */

The UEC Custos is a class of patrol cruiser built for the Federation Navy. Smaller and lighter than the massive Sanctus class, Custos cruisers fare poorly in the beam-heavy combat environment that makes up much of the Federation-Alliance conflict, but crippling Sanctus losses have forced Admirals Netreba and Calder to include these cruisers in their fleet maneuvers. They are capable of limited torpedo strikes against soft (or, when supported, hard) targets and have adequate point defenses to handle bomber attack.

The Custos is notable for its highly modular design, a quality which made it economical in peacetime and flexible in wartime. The directive to prepare Custos units for front-line combat led to a crash upgrade program that enhanced the Custos' agility and electronic warfare capabilities in order to give it a fighting chance against beam attack and heavy assault wings armed with swarm missiles. Orders were also placed for Custos spaceframes modified from the keel up for expanded capabilities, but these craft were apparently never produced.
The Custos is now deployed as an ad-hoc convoy harasser, screening element, and electronics warfare platform to anchor maneuvers by other Fleet elements.

:See also: Enemy wing names

Volition used letters of the Greek alphabet to designate friendly wings.

*Alpha
*Beta
*Gamma
*Delta
*Epsilon
*Zeta
*Eta
*Theta
*Iota
*Kappa
*Lambda
*Mu
*Nu
*Xi
*Omicron
*Pi
*Rho
*Sigma
*Tau
*Upsilon
*Phi
*Chi
*Psi
*Omega

Alpha 1 is nearly always the player's character. Alpha through Kappa (with the notable exception of Eta, which rarely appears) are used regularly for fighter wings. Lambda is used frequently for transports and freighters in FS2. Omega is occasionally for transports (with greater frequency in FS1).

In FS1 missions with allied Terrans and Vasudans, Terran wings are usually from the first half of the alphabet while Vasudan wings are usually from the second half of the alphabet. The only FreeSpace 1 missions that violate this "rule" are The Great Hunt and Good Luck (with Epsilon wing of Thoths). Therefore, this cannot be taken as a canon convention, but instead a preference of certain Volition mission designers, like Shivan wing naming patterns.

A mission designer need not follow this naming system, although this system is very common among mission designers.
Description:
Blue Planet: War in Heaven Tech Room Description
The Ainsarii is a next-generation stealth fighter recently commissioned for the United Earth Navy. A swift and maneuverable fighter, the Ainsarii has sacrificed armour to house an advanced electronics scrambling suite and a high-performance reactor to power it. It was developed by Jovian scientists independently of the GTVA's Pegasus project. Strangely, although all signs suggest the Ainsarii has entered limited production, none have yet been deployed to combat units on even a trial basis.
A laser is a device that emits a highly coherent beam of light. Many weapons in the FreeSpace universe are referred to as lasers, however, being slow-moving 'blobs' of matter, they would not be considered lasers in real life. Although beam weapons are never mentioned as being lasers in the games, their mechanism is known to somehow involve photons, which are an integral part of laser technology.

Examples
Weapons that are explicitly referred to as lasers include:

*GTW ML-16 - The ML-16 is referred to in its tech description as being an Argon laser focused using a ceramic optical system.
*GTW Disruptor - The Disruptor is described as a gas-focused krypton laser that is diffused by the injection of NO2 into the chamber just prior to the emission of the laser light.
*GTW Flail - Despite being referred to as a 'rifle', the tech description also describes the Flail as being a krypton laser.
*GTW Prometheus - According to the tech description, the Prometheus is an argon laser that is "generated at the destructive frequency" of the target material.
*GTW Subach HL-7 - The Subach is described as being "a xaser weapon, firing an intense, highly focused beam of x-ray emissions."
*GTW Akheton SDG - Although its mechanism is not mentioned in the game, it is stated to have been based on the same principle as the Disruptor.
*GTW Prometheus R and GTW Prometheus S - Described as being based on the same technology as the original Prometheus.
*GTW Morning Star - Described as being based on the same technology as the Flail.
The Guardian Angel is the first ship of its class, a front-line battlecarrier capable of favourably engaging enemy warships of cruiser class and below while carrying a large fighter compliment. The 900-meter long design incorporates four hangar bays for rapid strikecraft deployment along with a formidable and diverse array of weapon turrets, allowing the ship to hold its own against most threats.
The design also provides comfortable living spaces for its 400 crew, minimizing fatigue during extended deployment.

A new ship of the Guardian Angel class is planned for each new class of Abyss academy graduates based on the evaluations of the previous classes, gradually modernizing the LSF fleet.
A refit to the Challenger class rectifying some of its design flaws, the Challenger II carries a more powerful shield generator and has its torpedo launchers replaced by broadside Phaser and a heavy turret mounted on its ventral side. These changes make the Challenger II far less vulnerable to enemy flanking maneuvers.
The reflective armor fitted on the Challenger is effective at absorbing hits from energy-based weapons, but is considerably less durable against solid projectiles.
The Challenger is a 517-meter long cruiser with a 230-man crew built around a powerful forward beam cannon array, capable of knocking out smaller warships in a single shot. The only modern capital ship still mounting torpedo launchers, the Challenger mounts overwhelming forward firepower, but relies heavily on a proper fleet formation to cover its flanks from enemy warships.
Wings of Dawn Tech Room Description
The Challenger is a 517-meter long cruiser with a 230-man crew built around a powerful forward beam cannon array, capable of knocking out smaller warships in a single shot. The only modern capital ship still mounting torpedo launchers, the Challenger mounts overwhelming forward firepower, but relies heavily on a proper fleet formation to cover its flanks from enemy warships.

The reflective armor fitted on the Challenger is effective at absorbing hits from energy-based weapons, but is considerably less durable against solid projectiles.

Note: The last mission, Good Luck, has no soundtrack. However, a CD of enhanced music tracks provided by Dan Wentz implies that this track was intended to be used in Good Luck. It would have been the only standard single-player FS1 mission with this music.

FreeSpace 2
Music tracks in FreeSpace 2 are named after books of the Bible.
THIS IS AN IMPORTANT PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ANNOUNCING THAT VALUED COMMUNITY MEMBER DROID803 HAS ANNOUNCED THAT HE HAS SOMETHING TO ANNOUNCE (BUT HE HAS YET TO ANNOUNCE IT).

THERE IS CURRENTLY NOTHING TO ANNOUNCE EXCEPT THAT DROID803 HAS ANNOUNCED THAT HE HAS SOMETHING TO ANNOUNCE WHICH MEANS THAT IT IS LIKELY OR AT THE VERY LEAST REASONABLY PLAUSIBLE THAT THERE WILL BE SOMETHING TO BE ANNOUNCED IN THE FUTURE.

WHEN THERE IS SOMETHING TO BE ANNOUNCED IT WILL BE ANNOUNCED THAT THERE IS SOMETHING TO BE ANNOUNCED. IT WILL PROBABLY BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY THEREAFTER. IT IS ALSO PROBABLE THAT WE WILL ANNOUNCE THAT WHATEVER IT WAS THAT WAS TO BE ANNOUNCED HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED. IT WILL PROBABLY NOT BE ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED THAT WHAT WAS TO BE ANNOUNCED HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE A LITTLE RIDICULOUS.
The GVFr Bes is a Vasudan-designed freighter. Despite the Bes being a ship that was brought into service after the end of the Great War, it is never encountered in the single player FreeSpace 2 campaign.
Description:
FS2 Tech Room Description
For the past 20 years, the GVFr Bes has been the mainstay of Vasudan shipping fleets. While some Terran systems languished in the post-war era, the Vasudans experienced an economic recovery that was miraculous, given the annihilation of their home planet. Experts credit the policies of the restored Imperial government that emerged following Khonsu II's dissolution of the Vasudan parliament. As commerce among the Vasudan systems resumed and expanded into Terran worlds, a new generation of space-faring cargo vessels was required to meet the needs of this burgeoning economy.
FS2 MetaStream Model Description
For the past twenty years, the GVFr Bes has been the mainstay of Vasudan commercial and military shipping fleets. While some Terran systems languished in the post-war era, the Vasudans experienced an economic and industrial recovery that was nothing short of miraculous, given the annihilation of all life on their home planet. Experts credit the policies of the newly restored Imperial government that emerged following Khonsu XVII’s dissolution of the Vasudan parliament. As commerce among the Vasudan systems resumed and expanded into Terran worlds, a new generation of space-faring cargo vessels was required to meet the needs of this burgeoning economy.
Veteran Comments
The Nordera are a primitive, war-like race who are used as battle thralls by the Hertak in the Wings of Dawn universe. They serve as antagonists in the first Wings of Dawn campaign.

History
The Nordera had barely entered the industrial age when the Hertak visited their homeworld. The Hertak saw that this race of simple minded but physically strong warriors could very well turn into excellent battle thralls. So they gave a show of force, united all Nordera tribes on the planet and promised them endless glory and opponents to fight. They then helped them get into space and gave them control over several planets in different systems. In return they gained an army of utterly fearless warriors that will obey their every command when properly motivated.

The Nordera have little in the terms of culture or tradition and it is likely that they will descend back into a savage state should the Hertak ever decide to abandon them.

Society
The Nordera have no society to speak of.

Ships
Although Nordera spacecraft are typically low-tech and crudely constructed, they are still fully capable of challenging their Terran and Cyrvan counterparts, albeit in some cases by sheer volume alone. Nordera craft are armored with heavy steel plating which is highly resistant to solid projectiles, but significantly more vulnerable to energy-based weaponry. Their main armament of solid projectiles and high explosive torpedoes, although primitive and largely incapable of breaching energy shields, remains highly effective against the reflective armor used on most Terran ships. The large amounts of explosive material stored on board as fuel and ammunition cause sizable explosions when Nordera vessels are destroyed.
