The 99th Skulls appeared solely in one mission during the FreeSpace 2 campaign. From what there can be gathered, the 99th Skulls were an elite squadron, probably used by the SOC. They were among the first squadrons to use the GTF Erinyes and the UD-8 Kayser primary weapons.

In that mission, a new technology appeared: The GTA Charybdis.
The craft of this squadron were designated as Skull Alpha and Skull Beta. If the GTA Hawako survives or not depends on the player's performance.

Special Operations Command (abbreviated most of the time to SOC) is a subsection of Galactic Terran Vasudan Intelligence, and is considered to be the heart of Terran intelligence gathering. It played a pivotal role in the defeat of the Neo-Terra Front and was likely the key player in the elimination of the Hammer of Light.

During the NTF Insurgency, Special Operations Command faced large pressure from Allied Command, who encouraged them to launch as many missions as possible to learn as much as they could about the NTF. Because of this, elite pilots often volunteered and most of the time never returned to their squads.

When these dangerous operations succeeded, the Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance had enough information about the enemy to launch tactical strikes against any NTF targets. These accurate and co-ordinated strikes played important role in the Battles for Deneb and Regulus. SOC Missions were carried out deep within enemy territory, and demanded stealth and discipline. When the operative's presence was revealed, they were often recalled to avoid needless casualties. As the NTF grew stronger and began to win engagements in Deneb, even the SOC operations were focused on making as much damage as possible with minimal casualties from GTVA point of view.

Specific actions
Little is known about the operations of Special Operations Command, except those missions in which Alpha 1 flew during the SOC loops of the main campaign.

The mysterious ETAK device, believed for some time to be a weapon, was the impetus for Allied Command to infiltrate the NTF via SOC operatives. Alpha 1 of the 242nd Suicide Kings was one of these spies. Once inserted into the NTF, Alpha 1 made contact with Lieutenant Commander Christopher Snipes, the SOC's undercover mission coordinator within the NTF. Once they were established within one of the NTF's fighter squadrons, the first mission undertaken by the pair was to scan the NTF Iceni and acquire any additional data possible, especially about ETAK.

This mission was complicated by the actions of Admiral Khafre, who, despite knowing the operation being carried out near the Iceni, ordered his Vasudan battle group to launch an assault on the NTF convoy against the orders of Allied Command. His choice threatened the safety of the operation and the lives of the volunteers, and the SOC operatives had no choice but to fire on the GTVA forces, not wanting the Iceni destroyed. The Iceni successfully reached the jump node to Epsilon Pegasi and Admiral Khafre was branded a traitor and court-martialled.

The next operation did not go as planned, either. The NTF squadron the SOC pilots had infiltrated was ordered to defend an Argo-class transport, the NTT Sunder. The cargo and destination of this transport was highly classified, which led to the suspicion it had something to do with the ETAK project. Snipes, with the help of the crew chief of the squadron (also a SOC operative), installed overload devices to destroy the remainder of the squadron. Alpha 1 and Snipes then attempted to hijack the Sunder with the help of a GTVA agent piloting the transport. At this point, secrecy was paramount, and the alliance deployed their new AWACS, the GTA Charybdis, to jam communications in the area, allowing the operation to remain covert.

NTF fighters responded to a partial message warning of a reactor core breach, and raced to aid the NTT Sunder. Alpha 1 and Snipes, aided by the pilots of an SOC unit, the 99th Skulls, successfully hijacked the NTT Sunder, repelling NTF forces sent to aid in the recovery operation. Blowing up a decoy Argo-class transport, Snipes managed to successfully pin the blame on another NTF commander, who was court-martialled and executed. The NTT Sunder successfully reached the Regulus system and was recovered by GTVA Intelligence.

Snipes was reassigned, and the NTF began to suspect Alpha 1 of being a GTVA operative. Sending Alpha 1 on a suicide mission, they ambushed the fighter pilot and attempted to have him executed in the field. Once again, the 99th Skulls saved the day, and recovered the pilot, as well as sensitive data that had been stashed in the fighter's computers.

Shortly before Capella went supernova, the SOC launched another dangerous mission - using Alpha 1 and three additional pilots to rescue the NTT Grall and Commander Snipes, who had ended up stranded deep in the Nebula. He was rescued from a highly electrictally-active, Shivan-infested area, along with the crew of his ship.

Alpha 1, Snipes, and two others then volunteered to take part in a mission to infiltrate the area behind the Second Knossos subspace portal, which had been discovered by a Vasudan patrol. They flew specially-modified Mara-class fighters, captured earlier by SOC, and modified for Terran use. Behind the portal, they found numerous Sathanas juggernauts, heading towards the portal to the nebula, as well as a large fleet of Shivan cruisers and warships. This expedition's main goal was only to gather intelligence and this succeeded as soon as they gathered information about the true strength of the Shivan fleet. During the mission, the SOC volunteers inspected and destroyed three shivan devices of a type never before encountered by the GTVA. Game documentation refers to these devices as Shivan communication device, or Shivan Comm Nodes, but it is not known if the had GTVA determined this to be their function by the end of FS2.

After the destruction of these devices, they rushed back to the jump node back to the nebula and escaped.

After this mission, there is no canonical information about the SOC and its operations

The Parliamentary Vasudan Empire
Abbreviated as PVE or (non-canon) VPE. The space-based military wing of the PVE is known as the Parliamentary Vasudan Navy (PVN). Curiously, the corresponding GTA/GTN appears much less often.

The capital of the PVE was Vasuda Prime until it was devastated by SD Lucifer in 2335. Afterwards, the capital was moved to Aldebaran.

FreeSpace 2 describes the ruling Parliment of Vasuda circa the Great War as having been plagued with Byzantine infighting and serious corruption; whatever the civilian government's faults the PVN seems not to have been seriously affected by them. As Khonsu II dissolved the Parliament of Vasuda without provoking a noteable upheaval in Vasudan society, the powers of the Emperor even under the Parliamentary system must have remained relatively broad.

Speculative
Any info read here is not canon.
----
The Vasudan peoples were always living under parliamentary authority, leaving decisions to those who are skilled politicians, but also let Vasudan citizens to openly discuss and request changes in the Vasudan constitution.

Space exploration and expansion were carried out almost in the same way it has been at the Galactic Terran Alliance, initially, the Vasuda system was wholly used up, then with subspace, the empire expanded. Despite what the Terrans were hoping of space exploration, to find new home to replace the polluted and quickly deteriorating Earth, the Vasudans simply strived to find a more ideal planet to cultivate its terrain and use it for an economic prosperity. The Ribos and the Aldebaran systems both contained planets capable to supporting life. The Vasudans got accustomed to dry environment, thereby any desert-like planets were considered ideal for the Vasudan species.

Considering the fact the Vasudans were warring each other less than Terrans did, their military was not as much advanced as the Terrans'. More advantegous and advanced economy however, could have changed the tide.

Strangely enough, the balance between the two sides were even all the time.

The Neo-Terran Front (or NTF) was a rebel group led by Admiral Aken Bosch, former commander of the GTVA 6th fleet. They came to prominence after a violent military coup in the Polaris system, eighteen months prior to the events of Freespace 2. Within weeks, a domino effect saw the governments of Regulus and Sirius fall to the NTF.

This article is about the ideals of the Neo-Terran Front. For a complete chronolgy of events concerning the Neo-Terran Front, see The NTF Rebellion

Bosch's vision of Neo-Terra informs the ideology of his movement. With contact to Earth severed since the end of The Great War, Bosch imagined a new home world for the Terran race, a utopia that would restore the grandeur of the lost world. As the people of Earth once relied on Polaris to help them navigate the seas, the North Star would become the spiritual and political compass for Terrans of the new era. Bosch's message had a profound impact on the so-called Lost Generation, born during the post-war Reconstruction. Bosch's message resonated with many people, largely because his pro-Terran ideology, and eventually the actions and attitudes of the NTF as a whole, were explicitly anti-Vasudan. The NTF opposed any Terran-Vasudan alliance and called for the dissolution of the GTVA. The NTF core systems had suffered political and economic chaos throughout the post-war Reconstruction, and the Vasudans' miraculous recovery under Khonsu II's leadership embittered those Terrans still struggling to rebuild their own systems. Bosch exploited this anti-Vasudan sentiment to achieve his own political ends. The Neo-Terran Front provided the youth of Polaris, Regulus, and Sirius with a cause to fight and die for.

That cause, however, was not all it seemed. While Bosch's apparent motives were relatively simple and straightforward, he saw the entire NTF rebellion as little more than a means to an end, calling them a "mob of stupid cattle." Bosch's true intentions, while not made explicitly clear, essentially involved dissolving the alliance with the Vasudans in order to forge a new alliance with the Shivans, an alliance which, in Bosch's mind, would have protected humanity forever. Almost all of the NTF's ideologies and actions can be traced back to this goal. Bosch's anti-Vasudan message allowed him to target Vasudan systems, where Ancient ruins holding key information about the Shivans could be plundered. He stole the NTF Iceni as it would make the ideal vessel for his eventual trip into Shivan space, and he built ETAK in secret in the Boadicea asteroid facility to hide his true intentions from the GTVA (though action by the GTVA suggest that at least elements of Alliance command knew what he was doing and intended to allow him to complete his work, before taking ETAK for themselves).

The downfall of the NTF came about due to a combination of factors, but can largely be attributed to two things: Firstly, as Bosch's goal grew nearer, he began to expend resources on non-critical (to the NTF) battles which would allow him to enter the Shivan Nebula to make contact with the destroyers. This severely weakened the NTF fleets which were already reeling due to the second factor in their downfall, the deployment of the GTVA Colossus.
No dates more specific than the year (2367) are given for the events of Freespace 2, so we cannot be certain of the exact date of the rebellions emergence, and it could be any time between June of 2365 and June of 2366.
The Neo-Terran Remnant is a terrorist/pirate group that operates in former NTF systems and is made up of the remnants of that organization not adequately mopped up after the events of the rebellion. They operate under a similar ideology to the old Neo-Terran Front (anti-Vasudanism, establishment of Polaris as a new terran capital) but have lost much of the influence and military might of their parent organization. Lacking both manpower and military might, they often carry out terrorist attacks against civillian populations, financed by piracy.

http://freespaceserver.cjb.net/topace/wiki/GTVASign.jpg

The Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance (or GTVA) is the central government in Freespace 2. Formed by an alliance between the Terran blocs that were the result of the breakup of the GTA and the Vasudan Empire, the first iteration of the Alliance came into being under a historic treaty in 2345, ten years after the Great War, which built on the ceasefire and eventual cessation of hostilities in the 14 year war brought on by the arrival of the Shivans. This treaty organization recognized the autonomy of its constituents as it provided a framework for trade and mutual defense. The Great War had effectively transformed the enmity between Terrans and Vasudans into a lasting fellowship.

As the industry and economy of the Terran-Vasudan systems recovered, support for a more powerful GTVA gained momentum. In 2358, delegates signed into existence the Beta Aquilae Convention (BETAC), named after the system where the constitution was drafted and ratified. BETAC dismantled the governments of the Terran blocs and recognized the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Vasudan Imperium as the supreme authorities of Terran-Vasudan space.

Under BETAC, the Vasudans and the Terrans maintain separate fleets under a single command structure. A warship is designated GT or GV, indicating whether it is Galactic Terran or Galactic Vasudan. The two species openly exchange information and technology, and the most recent fighters and bombers can be modified to accommodate pilots of either species.

Technically, BETAC is but one of a series of conventions and treaties that define how the GTVA functions as a political, military, and economic entity. However, the significance of BETAC as the cornerstone of the Terran-Vasudan alliance made it the favored target of NTF propagandists during their rebellion.

Galactic Terran Intelligence (GTI) was the vast intelligence gathering arm of the Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA), responsible for many of the strategies and technologies developed in the Great War. GTI did much of the GTA's research and development and was behind several new designs, in addition to its namesake intelligence function. Its stated primary objective was "to provide Terran Command with accurate and comprehensive information regarding the tactics, technologies, activities, and strategic objectives of our enemies, specifically the Shivans and the Vasudan insurgency, Hammer of Light."

GTI appears to have grown well beyond the GTA's control by the end of the Great War, and was probably in this position well before then. At the end of the Great War, following the SD Lucifers destruction, the GTI rebelled against the GTA. Their ultimate goals are not clear, for they never had the chance to carry them out. However, the GTA believed they intended to overthrow the GTA and dissolve the Terran-Vasudan alliance.

Not all members of GTI were in on the plot; among those left in the dark was GTI's own special-operations branch, based on the GTD Krios. Pilots from the Krios acquired information about rogue activity in the GTI before the rebellion could be officially declared, and GTI attempted to eliminate this information before it could be used against them. They destroyed the Krios but failed to kill all the pilots involved or all the escape pods that the Krios launched.

The surviving pilots of the Krios joined the GTD Soyakaze and lead the effort to uncover what GTI was trying to do, eventually encountering the Hades super-destroyer, a GTI super weapon equal to the SD Lucifer in both firepower and armor. In a remarkable display of exceptionally superb GTA piloting skill and exceptionally idiotic GTI strategy, the Hades was destroyed before it was ever deployed in an offensive role. The destruction of the Hades effectively ended the GTI rebellion.

GTI is known to have operated a number of Orion class destroyers.
*GTD Krios (destroyed)
*GTD Myrmidon
*GTD (name never shown)
The GTD Soyakaze may or may not have been a GTI destroyer. In any case, by the end of the campaign it was allied with the GTA.

The Galactic Terran Alliance was an alliance formed by the human race after the unification of the peoples at Earth. Abbreviated as GTA. The space-based military wing of the GTA is known as the Galactic Terran Navy (GTN) but referenced as such only in the Freespace Reference Bible. The intelligence branch of the GTA is Galactic Terran Intelligence (GTI).

Speculation
Any info read here is not canon. The following section needs to be cleaned up to separate the facts from the interpretation.
----

The beginning
The Galactic Terran Alliance was formed in the first years of the age of space exploration, when the nations of the Earth have unified and formed an alliance. In the beginning, there were linguistic difficulties, but later, the English language later became a common language all through Terran space, even though not all GTA citizens spoke it as if it were their mothertongue, or did not speak it in a way that could be understood.

Initially, the alliance was focusing on economic and research factors, but later, with the discovery of Subspace, building, maintaining and developing a space navy was at hand.
----
Expansion
The Alliance spread their empire all through the Sol system, building shipyards, repair yards and other kind of factories or supply depots. By the end of the 23rd centaury, the GTA had already taken up the whole Sol system and also spread to Delta Serpentis and Beta Aquilae.
----
Wars
In 2320, the GTA first encountered the Vasudans. At the beginning, there was no armed conflict, the war only erupted in the year of 2321, when a Vasudan representative was murdered. Both sides mutually declared war on each other and the 14-Year War began.

After forteen year of seemingly endless war, when the Shivans destroyed both Vasudan and Terran targets, the two sides signed an armistice and turned against the cosmic destroyers. The most important war in the history of both species began.

Ross 128 had already been lost, Betelgeuse, Beta Cygni and Ribos also fell to the Shivans' superiority. When the Shivans took Antares, it became clear for the GTA that if the Vasuda system falls, they lost the Vasudans. In the effort to defend Vasuda from the mighty Shivan fleet, innumerable Terran pilots fell. Even after all the sacrifice both sides have taken, the SD Lucifer bombarded Vasuda Prime, killing billions of innocent Vasudans after only fourteen hours of ceaseless bombardment.

Sol was the next target of a Shivan attack. If it had not been for the Vasudan refugees who found the Ancient records, the Earth would have also been debilitated. Thankfully to the successful extraction of the Ancient data, the SD Lucifer was destroyed in the Subspace tunnel between Sol and Delta Serpentis, causing the jump node to collapse.

Although the Shivans were defeated and the Great War has come to an end, putting the dissolution of the long-living alliance was at hand.
----
Dissolution
In the year of 2345, the Terrans and Vasudans officially formed an alliance, called the Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance, causing the end of the Galactic Terran Alliance.

The Beta Aquilae Convention was ratified in 2358, which centralized power in the Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance. As its name indicated, it was signed at Beta Aquilae, which is also known to be a highly important base of operations for the GTA. The convention included the common law in GTVA space and defended civilian rights. It also controlled military behaviour and regularised military morale. After days of debate and concillation, both sides agreed on all points of the pact and the Beta Aquilae Convention was born.

The Neo-Terran Front refused to accept the conditions of BETAC and completely ignored its presence until it could be used to unsettle GTVA Command, who must follow the convention. The epitome was when the NTC Trinity was found in the Shivan Nebula. The captain of the Trinity referred to his rights as a prisoner of war, based on the Beta Aquilae convention. GTVA Command has no choice but to put capitulate and attempted a rescue.

Specifics of BETAC
We know certain specifics of the Beta Aquilae Convention from ingame data, though, of course, we can not expect to know everything of what is likely to be a long and complex treaty. However, the following has been confirmed by in-game sources:

* Prisoners of war may refuse to answer questions put to them by their captors.
* Firing on escape pods is against the rules of war.
* Civillians are not to be fired upon by either side during a conflict.

Overall, the specifics of BETAC resemble those of the Geneva Convention, and the Terran half of this treaty was probably based on this, or whatever had succeeded it by 2358.

Airborne Warning and Control System, more commonly known simply as AWACS is a piece of equipment which only special ship classes have. *better beam weapon accuracy
*detection of stealth fighters and bombers
*blocking communication and often confuse radars
*enables confused radars to properly detect enemy craft
The 70th Blue Lions, as an elite squadron used the most advanced ships and weapons. They flew the GTF Erinyes and were among the few squadrons to have permission to use the UD-8 Kayser laser gun and the Infyrno warhead.

News about the number of Shivan juggernauts were surfacing when the Blue Lions assisted the Evacuation of the 3rd Fleet headquarters at Vega. The pilots performed admirably and saved both evacuation transport and the GTD Messana. The station had to be self-destructed after all personnel were taken on-board the Messana.

After, the evacuation of the whole Capella system started. The Blue Lions escorted the civilian vessels, among them a medical ship. The mission was successful.

There was little time to complete the evacuation, so the GTVA had to keep the jump nodes leading outside safe. The GTVA Colossus and the remnants of the 3rd Fleet blockaded the jump node leading to Vega. It happened in this mission where the GTVA Colossus was destroyed despite all the feats of the 70th Blue Lions, there was nothing to be done.

It is no wonder this Elite squadron received the task to defend the GTD Bastion so that the destroyer could seal off the jump node leading to Vega. The mission succeeded, but when Capella became a supernova, only a very few pilots escaped, some of them were of the 70th Blue Lions.
Admiral Bosch's Neo-Terran Front was close to total defeat. The remaining NTF warships were defending the Iceni or making blockade runs to escape to the nebula beyond Gamma Draconis. These targets are to be intercepted, as many as possible. Only bomber squadrons such as the 64th Raptors could do it. The NTD Uhuru, the NTC Pax, the NTC Liberty, and the NTC Undaunted were trying to break the allied blockade, clearing the way for further NTF escapees. This attempt was brutally thwarted, the NTD Uhuru, an Orion-class destroyer was destroyed along with other cruisers.

Two new technologies assisted the 64th in this battle: the Artemis medium bomber and the Mjolnir Remote Beam Cannons. The Artemis was fast enough to face fighter escorts and engage warships at the same time.

After the battle, Allied Command intercepted a transmission, revealing the location of the Iceni. By the time the bomber pilots arrived, the Iceni had already made the jump to Gamma Draconis. The Raptors engaged the local NTF warship, the NTD Vindicator and destroyed it. Then a Vasudan corvette assisted the Raptors and destroyed more NTF vessels. The 64ths were present at the showdown: They assisted the GTCv Monitor in keeping the vicinity of the Knossos portal clear, but using sabotage, the NTF Iceni escaped.
The first known actions for the Hammerheads took place during the Great War, when pilots from the squadron were launched from the GTD Bastion in Delta Serpentis to assist in the assault on the SD Lucifer in the subspace tunnel to Sol.

The pilots who survived that combat remained forever in the Sol system.

The squadron was eventually transferred to the Aquitaine, but no data is available on their activities until just prior to the Second Great War, when the 53rd Hammerheads oversaw the evacuation of Cygnus Prime and later encountered the NTF Iceni, buried within the Boadicea Installation in the Deneb asteroid belt. They were then sent to intercept the Iceni at the jump node as it escaped Deneb, but they failed due to bad jump in coordinates and Command's decision to pull the blockade. After the Iceni's escape, the Hammerheads engaged and destroyed two cruisers with the help of the GVD Psamtik, the NTC Impervious and the NTC Glorious.
The Hammerheads are the first squadron the Player joins in Freespace 2.
After the NTF started their assault in Epsilon Pegasi, the Suicide Kings were called in. They defended Enif Station from a large-scale bomber strike, while the GTVA Colossus took care of the NTCv Hawkwood, the corvette which was attacking the base. After this success, the GTVA Colossus started to get resupplied, in preparation for engaging and nullifying the NTF forces. The target was the NTD Repulse, Admiral Koth's command vessel. The Colossus was resupplied and a plan to stop the Admiral formulated.

The Suicide Kings received a mission worthy for their squadron name: They had to lure an NTF squadron, consisting of twelve Hercules fighters away from two NTF Fenris cruisers and keep the hostile cruisers alive, forcing the Admiral to interfere and move to protect the cruisers. When the NTF Repulse made its appearance, the GTVA sent in the Colossus to force the Admiral to surrender. He did not. The Repulse set a collision course with the Colossus and the monstrous warship had to destroy the NTF destroyer. The Suicide Kings could not do anything about this.
The 134th Barracudas squadron, being an evaluation unit, tests weapons and reports their efficiency to superiors, often subjectively. When the NTF forces were withdrawing from Polaris and Regulus, the Barracudas squadron was assigned to the nebular theatre to test the new Target Acquisition and Guidance missiles and the Pegasus stealth fighter.

The Barracudas faced some Shivan resistance while escorting the convoy which was carrying the protoypes. The convoy ships suffered no casualties and the test could commence as planned. The pilots who were assigned to test the TAG-A missiles faced Shivan targets and got overwhelmed and outgunned. Though one pilot survived the engagement, by the assistance of the GTCv Warspite.

The next step was to test the Pegasus fighter which also did not proceed exactly as planned. The GTD Aquitaine was ordered to withdrawn and pilots from the Barracudas squadron escorted the command ship until she made it back to Gamma Draconis.
----
Speculative, non-canon
It is unknown whether the Barracudas tested the AWACS ship, the GTA Charybdis or not. It is, however, pretty sure the Barracudas did not have permission to test the GTF Erinyes or the UD-8 Kayser in combat.
The NTF was defeated. Because of this, the GTVA focused on searching the nebula for Shivan targets. In a mission to destroy Shivan gas miners the GVCv Tatem came under attack by a SJ Sathanas-class vessel which easily destroyed the Vasudan corvette. The GVD Psamtik was quick to retreat back to Gamma Draconis and on order, the Scorpions oversaw the demolition of the Knossos subspace portal to prevent the Sathanas from entering Teran-Vasudan space. The 203rd Scorpions took major part in the fight against the Sathanas. For more information, see SJ Sathanas and GTVA Colossus.

After the victory over the Shivan juggernaut, the Scorpions received the task to find Aken Bosch and the NTF Iceni inside the nebula. They did find the Iceni, but the Admiral had probably been taken by the Shivans. In that mission, the GTVA attempted to retrieve the specifications of the ETAK device by rescuing the crew of the Iceni. It barely succeeded before the self-destruct system came online.

The Scorpions were present when the second Sathanas juggernaut destroyed the GVD Psamtik. After the destruction of their former command vessel, they got reassigned to the GVD Memphis, where they finished their duties by helping the Aquitaine escape the nebula.
It is the 107th Ravens who were first deployed to the Knossos portal to eliminate local Shivan forces and pave the way for Professor Mina Hargrove's research team to examine the portal. GTVA Command then ordered the Aquitaine to lead a scout inside the nebula. Inside the fog, Kappa wing of the 107th Ravens suddenly vanished. The Ravens assisted two Deimos-class corvettes, the GTCv Lysander and the GTCv Actium in clearing the nebula, but the strike force encountered a Ravana destroyer, the SD Ravana which destroyed one of the corvettes, the Lysander with a single beam salvo. The 107th Ravens then switched duties from Heavy Attack to Bombing. At the cost of heavy casualties, the SD Ravana was destroyed.
----
It is known that the 107th Ravens had existed fourty years before the events of FreeSpace 2.
