All these ships are from FS1, and the comments on weapon loadouts appear to apply to FS1 mainly. Some things may vary when these ships are selected in FS2.

Pictures are from the official FS1 site and the Descent Network.

GTF Apollo: This ship is vastly underrated. There is a general consensus among the FS2 community that the Apollo is worthless once you meet the Shivans. That's not true. The Apollo may not be terribly maneuverable and is on the slow side, but it is relatively durable and its guns are very well-placed. It can't carry the Phoenix V or Banshee, but it does carry the Prometheus, so weapons compatiility isn't as bad as many people think. The Apollo is best when you need a jack-of-all trades: it has better missile capacity and armor than the Valkyrie and Ulysses and more maneuverability and speed than a Herc. It's tied with the Herc as my favorite ship.

GTF Valkyrie: This ship is really fast, but not as maneuverable as the Ulysses. It is on the flimsy side: 200 shields and 200 armor. It can carry 120 Furies or 7 Phoenix Vs, so missile capacity is okay. It has four gun mounts and can carry the Prometheus, so its primary firepower is pretty much equal to an Apollo or Ulysses. All in all, it's a good interceptor, but get into a big firefight and you're toast.

It can carry not only the Promethus, but the Banshee as well - though you'll need to switch banks frequently to get the most out of the configuration. This ship is among the all time favorites - some even rate it higher than its succesor the Perseus.

GTF Ulysses: I don't like this ship. Its missile capacity is terrible, it can't take as much damage as an Apollo, and its guns are really spread out--not good if you're attacking a Manticore. It can carry the Disruptor Adv., so you need it to disable the Dragon, but otherwise it's not very useful.

GTF Hercules: This ship handles like a brick and kind of looks like one, but it's a damn good brick. With six gun mounts and the ability to carry pretty much everything except for bombs and in very large quantites, the Herc will chew anything that wanders in front of it to itty-bitty pieces. It has 600 shields but only 250 armor, so watch it during the subspace mission because it's hard to dodge in a Herc. It makes a decent interceptor if the bombers are far away because it can carry 16 Phoenix Vs. Just don't let them get too close because the Hercules is not much more maneuverable than a bomber.

Another all time favorite. Although some tend to call it slow, with afterburner-happy pilot this ship can be quite speedy - it still turns like a brick

GTB Athena: A fast strike bomber that can outrun and outmaneuver the Herc, the Athena is a good choice during the early part of the game, but later it will start collecting dust because it can't carry the Prometheus and because bombing missions are best done with a bomber that can carry real bombs.

GTB Medusa: The name Medusa is fitting: this bomber is almost ugly enough to turn you to stone. But it will be your workhorse in bombing missions until you get the Ursa. It is really slow and unmaneuverable, and only has two gun mounts, so you'll rely on your escorts a lot. It can carry the Tsunami but not the Harbinger.

GTB Ursa: The slowest and worst-handling Terran bomber in the game, the Ursa is the only ship that can carry the Harbinger (aside from the Amun, which is a Vasudan ship) and thus the bomber of choice when you're fighting destroyers. It has five gun mounts, although they're not positioned very well. Competent escorts are a must.

PVF Anubis: This thing is awful. It doesn't just suck, it blows. It can go pretty fast, but it has NO AFTERBURNER, tiny secondary banks, only two gun mounts, and weak shields and armor. The Vasudans have to deploy them in hordes or use them for kamikaze attacks for them to be able to pose much of a threat. Feel free to slaughter them left and right.

PVF Horus: As fast as the Manticore, the Horus is hard to hit. Once you do get a couple of hits in, the Horus will go down easily. With 200 shields and 120 hitpoints, this thing might as well have a hull made of paper. Fasters ship even in the later Freespace era. It has a slighly better arnament than the Valkyrie. You'll be lucky to get your hands on it during the Great War era. Later it's too old to carry a puch.

PVF Seth: The Vasudan heavy assault fighter is smaller and less well-armed than the Herc, but it is nonetheless a threat. The Seth is faster and more maneuverable than the Herc and has an insanely fast afterburner.

PVF Thoth: The Vasudan answer to the Ulysses, the Thoth is fast and powerful. Be afraid.

This is supposed to be a replacement for the Amun, but I think the Zods should have just stuck with it. The Osiris is a poor bomber. It lacks the bomb capacity, primary punch, and strength of the Amun. Easy meat.

I always thought of the PVB Amun as being like a garbage truck. It's big, ugly, slow, and gets rid of trash Fenris-class cruisers. Make no mistake, the Amun is a nasty threat, especially to an Orion, which can't defend itself against fighters and bombers. It is the slowest bomber in the game, topping out at 40 m/s. It may not be able to dodge fire well, but it can take tons of punishment and really dish out the hurt on attackers with four gun mounts and two turrets.

The opinions on these ships are those of Woolie Wool and do not necessarily reflect those of anyone else in the community
