There will never be a Freespace3.

In short, here's why:

  • Volition, inc. is the developer of the previous Freespace games.
  • Interplay owns the rights to the Freespace universe (this may or may not be true. The opposite has not been confirmed, at least, so for now let's believe that they do, OK?) {see bottom}.
  • Volition is now owned by THQ, and not Interplay.
  • If it ain't by [V], it ain't Freespace 3.
  • Vasudans wuv fishies. (not sure this is a valid reason, though)

This 'toon says it all about how we feel about people asking for it... well, almost. http://nodewar.penguinbomb.com/aotd/Turnsky/bang.jpg

A little note on the rights not residing with Interplay: an Interplay employee has stated numerous times that Interplay doesn't own the rights. Now, the guy was a helpdesk dude, so he probably doesn't know what he's talking about, but it needs to be mentioned to avoid confusion.

Interplay recently introduced their 20th anniversary edition of Freespace 2, which can be ordered on their homepage. Moreover, HOTU (Home of the Underdogs) removed the game from their download list. Go figure it yourself....(we're just as lost as you)

Mid-July, news started pouring in that controversial game developer Derek Smart is considering buying the licence for Freespace 3. The entire HLP community (with a few exceptions) is against it. For further information, you can visit the HLP forums, where you can find more about this topic than you may be expecting.

At around End-July, further news has arrived that Derek Smart is deciding not to develop FS3. Further good news arrived when Daveb from [V] posted on the forums. It seems that [v] are going to talk to THQ about the current scene and the series.
