Blue Planet Tech Room Description

The GTCv Ophion was a heavy corvette project intended to supplant the Deimos as frontline combatant, relegating the latter to destroyer escort duties. Designed in the years immediately following the Second Shivan Incursion, the Ophion drew on lessons learned from engagement with NTF and Shivan warships. She was initially armed with a battery of four "Thorned Fist" medium beam turrets located amidships in contrast to the Deimos corvette's fore and aft placement. The introduction of meson reactor technology into the fleet and the anticipated increase in power reserve allowed a further two beam turrets to be incorporated into the design. Thick molybdenum armour covered critical areas of the ship, making her almost impervious to most forms of attack. Multiple "Houndtooth" turrets supplemented the "Crow Lash" flak defense to provide adequate defense against strikecraft and warheads.

A brutish dreadnought, the Ophion's combat role mirrored that of the GTVA Colossus - to wade into the middle of hostile warship formations, fists flying. Her ideal combat environment was to be outnumbered by several smaller cruisers and corvettes where she could bring maximum firepower to bear.

This battle role would quickly fall out of favour with High Command, whose 2369 Strategic Paper centred around the need to resolve engagements quickly and decisively in the event of invasion. The Threat Exigency Initiative focused on developing powerful beams, fast lightly armoured warships and rapid-fire pulse turrets. The Ophion was armoured to absorb hits and outlast the enemy - newer warships were armed to annihilate threats before they were hit. The Ophion never made it past the design stage before being cancelled in favour of the Chimera and Bellerophon. The cheaper, but arguably less powerful Deimos corvette would continue to be the backbone of the Galactic Terran battle line. Patrons of the Ophion school of design would eventually see their efforts vindicated with the Diomedes strike corvette.
