The GTEP Hermes was a Terran-designed escape pod. The use of the Hermes in the GTA began around the time of the destruction of the GTD Goliath circa 2323, and it has since been installed in numbers on every large ship and some installations in the Terran fleet. This practice of coupling several Hermes escape pods to larger vessels continued for over four decades, long after the GTA merged with the PVN to form the GTVA.

The GTEP Hermes

FS1 Tech Room Description

The Hermes Escape pod has been used since the destruction of the GTD Goliath over 12 years ago. They are used by the crews of destroyers and installations to escape destruction. It is always best to be prepared.

FS2 Tech Room Description

The GTEP Hermes escape pod is now standard equipment on every GTVA warship of cruiser size or larger. Each ship has several escape pods magnetically coupled to airlocks scattered around the ship's outer hull. Not intended for whole-crew evacuations, the Hermes has space for up to 20 crew members. Each pod is propelled by a small fusion engine, enough to remove the pod from the immediate vicinity of an exploding warship. It is also capable of subspace jumps.

These are probably the most defenseless ships in either game, how defenseless? Go play Exodus in Silent Threat or Betrayed in Silent Threat: Reborn.

The Hermes' hull is not nearly strong enough to survive the blast wave of the ships it is deployed on, so if you plan to have escape pods leave a vessel just as it explodes, you need to find a workaround. For example, in Out of the Dark, Into the Night, the Plato's escape pod is invulnerable.
