The Agias was supposed to be a sort of long-range missile fighter, similar to the Ares, but dedicated to escorting ships. The initial idea sprung from the final missions of FreeSpace 2, where weapons such as the Trebuchet made intercepting bombers a lot less reliant on speed and maneuverability, and more on the ability to carry a lot of ordnance. Thus, it was called a 'defence' fighter in that it uses its missiles to neutralize ships from afar, rather than an 'interceptor' which uses its speed to quickly sprint to enemy positions to neutralize threats. However the table stats don't really reflect this. In the Earth Defense mod, the Angel missile was intended to be a sort of next-generation Trebuchet.
