The GVCv Sobek

Description:

FS2 Demo Tech Room Description

The Sobek was put into service after the destruction of Vasuda Prime. It was created to counter the more powerful Shivan Cruisers.

FS2 Tech Room Description

Design of the corvette class GVCv Sobek began in the dark days after the destruction of Vasuda Prime by the Shivans in the Great War. The Vasudan navy wanted a vessel that could single-handedly counter powerful Shivan cruisers and provide critical support to Vasudan destroyers in battles against Shivan capital ships. The Sobek class fills those requirements admirably. Bristling with almost two dozen turrets, these corvettes are a terror to all vessels of cruiser size and below, while presenting a dire threat even to ships far larger than themselves.

Name origin

Sobek was an Egyptian god, a deification of crocodiles. He was worshiped to pacify the danger of crocodiles in the Nile River. He was said to be the symbol of strength and power in war times.

The Sobek is a fine ship in most regards, but it doesn't quite hold up to its sister class, the Deimos. With more emphasis on forward weaponry it has an advantage offensively, but anything attacking it from behind will have an easy time scoring hits. Granted, its excellent anti-fighter defenses mean nothing smaller than a cruiser can approach from behind, but even a Cain can inflict moderate damage if it gets the drop on the Sobek.

However, in a toe-to-toe duel with a Deimos, the Sobek will win, I've come to the conclusion that the Sobek is superior in capital ship combat, but much, much, much weaker in terms of anti-fighter ability. (I've seen a Deimos take out 20 more bomber wings, all other things being equal.) In fact, in a poll, the majority of people found the Deimos to be more effective overall, but the Sobek is obviously more effective in some circiumstances.

The Sobek is heavily reliant in capital ship combat on its two relatively heavy forward beams , making it fairly easy to neuter if you're supporting friendly capital ships against one.

Although not as good as the Deimos, it should be noted it can still repulse you with its numerous flak turrets.

The Sobek actually lost to the Deimos in duel on broadside. However, in a head-on engagement, the Sobek would win provided its main turrets are not disabled.

Though it does not posses the same overall capablity of the Deimos, the Sobek is still a competent opponent. Like the Mentu it is dangerous to approach from above or the rear, but it is equally vunerable to attack from below, with only three turrets covering that area. It is also better able to protect its forward heavy beams, as they lie within the arc of its forward AAA beams.

The only issue I have with the Sobek is its underside. In one particular mission, I managed to park myself underneath one and shoot down its weapons subsystem. I didn't have to worry about it killing me after that.

Destroying weapons doesn't affect beam accuracy. The previous poster is on crack.
