LSF Ray MkIII-E in Wings of Dawn

Description:

Wings of Dawn Tech Room Description

A customized variant of the Ray Mark III, the type-E incorporates several hull optimizations and improvements to the thruster assembly, allowing for higher top speed, increased maneuverability. Lateral thrusters allow the craft to perform strafing runs on capital ships and less maneuverable targets. To reduce mass, the fighter has slightly less armor than the standard Ray III, and the shield generator is downscaled due to the thruster system's power requirements.

The reflective armor fitted on the Ray III type-E is effective at absorbing hits from energy-based weapons, but is considerably less durable against solid projectiles.

I certainly prefer this one over the Ray III-W. It gives you the speed and maneuverability you need to turn and actually get behind to shoot the enemy craft. It's shields are indeed a little weaker than the plain Ray III or W, but they also regenerate slightly faster as well. Overall, it handles more like a dream than the original Ray III and it feels like I'm flying the GTF Perseus all over again. Sadly, however, its lateral thrusters accelerate too slow to be of any real worth.

A joy to fly, especially since unlike the original Ray III (and the W), it can keep up with pretty much any hostile ship, and thus it is really tempting to take over the Ray III-W the first time you fly it. However, given craft selection available to you towards the later portions of the campaign, I found the W a far more useful addition to the team loadout, as the only other real heavy fighter, the LSF Caliburn, is a rather unwieldy piece of hardware, whereas there is another wonderful, nimble, fighter available to you later on in the form of the LSF Kaze.
