The SSG Rahu class of gas miners is the Shivan equivalent of the Terran Zephyrus and Vasudan Anuket gas miners, discovered in the nebula beyond Gamma Draconis shortly before the first appearance of an SJ Sathanas.

There is a slight controversy over the Rahu's designation. Although the ship class designation for a gas-mining vessel is written simply as -G, as in the case of the GTG Zephyrus and GVG Anuket, the Rahu's full designation is oddly written as SSG, the ship class designation being -SG. The suffix -SG is usually used on sentry guns, but the Rahu is described as a gas miner. This is seen as a minor error on Volition's part in most circles, however.

The SSG Rahu

Description:

FS2 Tech Room Description

Almost nothing is known of the Rahu line of gas miners. It is assumed that they function in much the same way as our Zephyrus miners, funneling nebular gas into internal machinery that fractionates it into its molecular components for further processing. Rahu miners are armed with heavy laser turrets, so care must be taken when attacking them.

Attacking a Rahu should present you no great problems, though it is best done from the stern to avoid the turrets. Be well away from it as it explodes, because the Rahu's blast is no laughing matter, and at short range can shatter a lightly built fighter like a Serapis.

Surprisingly enough I found the Serapis the best Vasudan fighter to attack this miner with. But only when armed with a Maxim.

These are actually quite easy to disable if you get behind them and aim for the center of the rotating portion of the stern. Otherwise, these are pretty much like the other gas miners—easy to destroy, but with a large enough explosion to hurt or destroy you if you stay too close when they go up.

The Rahu has 1.5 times the armor of the Zephyrus, and almost four times as much armor as the Anuket, making it the toughest non-combat spacecraft in terms of armor, having more hitpoints than a Fenris Cruiser. This is all for naught, however, as its armament is even more pathetic than its Terran and Vasudan equivalents, mounting only three Shivan Heavy Lasers. Most of these differences are superficial though, as neither of the three ships have the means to survive any dedicated assault. The Rahu will probably last the longest as it can take the most hits, but that's about it—as stated, the most deadly thing about the Rahu is the shockwave it emits when it gives up the ghost.
