Altair III is a non-canon planet, but it is popularized by the classic campaign The Aeos Affair.
Altair III was once part of the Ancient empire. However, the Shivans arrived and bombarded the planet. Several millennia later, the GTVA returned and made their own gold mine and base at Altair III, known as the Aeos Base. The Shivans could not tolerate a Terran base so near to them, and so sent an attack force to annihilate Aeos Base.
