The Shivans
I believe that there is a simple explanation to the behavior of the Shivans. As they live in space and have no planetary colonies, and all living things must eat to survive what do can they eat in space? I think Shivans that must be feeding off of the elements of nebulae. They cause supernovae such as the Capella supernova to form new nebulae, explaining why they attacked in 2335. The Shivans would leave a great nebula, not directly attacking other species or expanding, but would have their military look for certain stars and nebulae.
