You should use a fighter that can be loaded out with the GTW UD-8 Kayser, GTW Maxim and GTM Trebuchet. The GTF Ares, if you completed SOC Loop 2, or the GTF Erinyes are good choices. If you choose the Erinyes, you can try loading out one of its secondary banks with Tempest missiles, and the other with Trebuchets, and/or settle with dual Prometheus S cannons.

People are fleeing Cappella like mad and it's up to Alpha 1, the new leader of the 70th Blue Lions to save the day!

The moment you enter the mission, you will see a severely-damaged GVCv Nebtuu, a Sobek-class corvette, attacking the Shivan corvette SCv Abraxis. Quickly target the front beam cannon of the Abraxis and destroy it with dual Trebuchets. If you do not do this fast enough, the Nebtuu will be destroyed, making the mission much harder.

Your primary objective in this mission is to make sure that Lambdas 1 and 2, two GTT Argo transports, and the GTM Vesalius, a Hippocrates-class medical frigate, make it to the Epsilon Pegasi jump node. Your secondary objective is to ensure the safe passage of the Sulla, a Triton-class freighter.

I personally prefer the Ares for this mission for a few reasons.
+
You should order your wingmen to protect the Nebtuu first, although it is highly unlikely that the corvette can hold off even a single wave of bombers. When the Nebtuu does go down, order your wingmen to protect Lambda 1. This transport will be the focus of most, if not all, of the bombers. Do your best to make sure no bombs hit either Lambda transport; they lose a third of their HP if one hits.

    a) It has more firepower than a Herc II and less than an Erinyes.

    b) It has a massive secondary bank in which you can stash all the trebuchets you'll ever need.

    c) Luckily, speed really isn't an issue. (Because, not despite this is an intercept mission.)

As for the weapon loadout I would recommend a kayser in the bigger slot and a subach in the smaller. This'll make quick work of pretty much everybody. As for the secondaries, load up on trebuchets. Yee-ha!
+
The key to this mission is being systematic. Remember which bombers you fire your Trebuchets at and use only your guns on them. As this mission is almost completely dominated by the arrival of bombers, you should also use your Bomb key often to target bombers and incoming warheads. Expect multiple waves of Seraphim, Nephilim, and Nahema bombers.

 +
If things get too hot during the mission, you can call in Theta wing (4 Erinyes fighters armed with UD-8 Kaysers) for reinforcement. If Alphas 2 and 3 die, Delta wing will jump in to assist you.

Alrighty, first off, this can be an extremely overwhelming mission the first time around, but if you know how to fly it becomes an absolute cake run. Right as you jump in you are greeting by the Nebtuu finishing off the Abraxis, a Moloch class corvette. Don't bother with its frontal beam cannon because it only shoots at the Nebtuu. You are also greeted by a nice wing of Nahemas about ready to launch their ordinance. Make sure you have your trebuchets are on single-fire for the Nahemas, and let it go at which ever you have targetted. Move onto the next bomber making sure it's a different one, and then the next. A trebuchet will finish off a Nahema on most difficulties, but if not, they'll warm it up for your lasers to blast it away. After you've shot a trebuchet at all Nahemas* there, check for bombs using your "B" key by default and eliminate any warheads inbound.
+
At about two to three minutes, the Gibborim, a Cain-class cruiser, will jump in from Epsilon Pegasi. For the moment, you can ignore it even though you are issued a directive to destroy its beam cannons; if you stray more than three kilometers from the convoy, Command will lecture you. Keep a few Trebuchets to destroy its main beam cannon and continue pursuing any nearby Shivan fighters and bombers. Once the cruiser gets within the Trebuchet's lock range, set your missiles to dual-fire mode, target its main beam cannon and fire a salvo. This should take out its main beam cannon. If not, fly ahead of the convoy and destroy it.

Note: Sometimes the Abraxis isn't killed off by the Nebtuu for a while which really screws things up. I usually just start over.
+
By the time you destroy the Gibborim, the rest of the mission should be pretty easy. Escort the four ships and take out any Shivans that jump in, prioritizing bombers. Once the four ships have made the jump to Epsilon Pegasi, you may return to base.

*The key to this mission is being systematic. Remember which bombers you unload your trebuchets at and don't waste more on them. You can waste a lot of intercepting time by sitting behind bombers at full health and just shooting at them.

After that initial firefight, a couple more wings of Nahemas will jump in rapid succession, and due to their short distance, you may not be able to use your trebuchets effectively. Don't panic, just remind your wingmen that they are not spectators and check periodically for bombs.

After a little bit more of this, a Cain class cruiser will enter from the jump node you are trying to reach, and command will warn you of its fearsome Sred! Don't worry about taking out its beam immediately, because you'll probably have to adjust your angle, and More nahemas are about to jump in anyway, some close, some at a distance. Just follow your gut as what you want to prioritize, but BE SYSTEMATIC!
+
You will obtain a Meritorious Unit Commendation for defending the entire civilian convoy (Lambda 1, Lambda 2, Vesalius, and Sulla).

* If you completed SOC Loop 2, you will also be given a choice to fly the GTF Ares for this and the next three missions, on top of the other ships available for choice by default.

In just a bit longer some seraphim (one wing) will jump in quite a ways off. Fire two trebuchets at each but don't pursue them; some more Nahemas are inbound close to the freighters which you should be able to neutralize fairly quickly. (Remember to check for bombs! Now would also be a good time to take down the Cain's main beam turret.)

Briefing
 +
If one searches though the briefing, they will find the icons of two Shivan ships in the third slide: a Moloch corvette named Kemwer, and a Rakshasa cruiser named Juesaes. Their presence in the briefing (along with the additional waypoints assigned to the Nebtuu, described below) leads to speculation that the node was supposed to be blockaded by the named ships, but was cut in the end.

GVCv Nebtuu
 +
In the highly unlikely event that the Nebtuu survives the Shivan bombers attacking it after the Abraxis is destroyed, it is scripted to go well ahead of the convoy to the Node and engage the Gibborim when it arrives. If the Nebtuu again survives, it will simply head off to the side of the node and park itself there. It plays no further role in the mission then.

With those pesky Nahemas history, turn your attention to the seraphim and let loose a heaping helping of your unbridled fury!
+
Objectives
 +
Although the Sulla is carrying destructible cargo, you will not be penalized as long as the freighter makes it to the jump node.

 +
Scoring
 +
The SCv Abraxis has a value of 5,000 points, so be sure to get the kill for it.  Fire off several Maxim and/or Trebuchet shots (and be sure to take down the critical forward SRed turret) when the mission starts.  With luck, the Nebtuu will finish it off with beams before it gets into flak range.  Make sure to keep your wingmen occupied so they don't take away your kill.

Now I'm not sure if the next bit is a FRED mess-up, but if so, it's certainly welcome. You get quite a bit of down time, except for a small ways off from the node a single Mara and a Nahema. (Strange, no?) Kill 'em and you're done.
+
The reason for this is probably due to the fact that in retail FRED, score values did not change when the ship class was changed. Volition probably added a Ravana or Demon and then later changed it to a Moloch.

ACT 3, MISSION 6

Fighter squadron: 70th Blue Lions

Description: A convoy in transit from Capella to Epsilon Pegasi has been attacked by Shivans. The 70th are sent in to oversee their successful transit.

Background

A convoy consisting of two transports, a medical frigate and a freighter has been attacked by Shivans on their evacuation from Capella to the Epsilon Pegasi jump node. The convoy's only escort, the GVCv Nebtuu, has called in for reinforcements, so Alpha wing of the 70th Blue Lions have been sent in.

Walkthrough

You should use a fighter that can be loaded out with the GTW UD-8 Kayser, GTW Maxim and GTM Trebuchet. The GTF Ares, if you completed SOC Loop 2, or the GTF Erinyes are good choices. If you choose the Erinyes, you can try loading out one of its secondary banks with Tempest missiles, and the other with Trebuchets, and/or settle with dual Prometheus S cannons.

If things get too hot during the mission, you can call in Theta wing (4 Erinyes fighters armed with UD-8 Kaysers) for reinforcement. If Alphas 2 and 3 die, Delta wing will jump in to assist you.

By the time you destroy the Gibborim, the rest of the mission should be pretty easy. Escort the four ships and take out any Shivans that jump in, prioritizing bombers. Once the four ships have made the jump to Epsilon Pegasi, you may return to base.

Objectives

(Objectives are viewable by pressing F4 and going to the Objectives tab)

  • Primary Objectives:
    • Escort the Lambda 1 and Lambda 2 to the Epsilon Pegasi node
    • Protect the medical ship Vesalius
  • Secondary Objectives:
    • Destroy all hostile targets
    • Protect the cargo ship Sulla

Medals

You will obtain a Meritorious Unit Commendation for defending the entire civilian convoy (Lambda 1, Lambda 2, Vesalius, and Sulla).

Tips

  • If you completed SOC Loop 2, you will also be given a choice to fly the GTF Ares for this and the next three missions, on top of the other ships available for choice by default.

Notes

Briefing

If one searches though the briefing, they will find the icons of two Shivan ships in the third slide: a Moloch corvette named Kemwer, and a Rakshasa cruiser named Juesaes. Their presence in the briefing (along with the additional waypoints assigned to the Nebtuu, described below) leads to speculation that the node was supposed to be blockaded by the named ships, but was cut in the end.

GVCv Nebtuu

In the highly unlikely event that the Nebtuu survives the Shivan bombers attacking it after the Abraxis is destroyed, it is scripted to go well ahead of the convoy to the Node and engage the Gibborim when it arrives. If the Nebtuu again survives, it will simply head off to the side of the node and park itself there. It plays no further role in the mission then.

Objectives

Although the Sulla is carrying destructible cargo, you will not be penalized as long as the freighter makes it to the jump node.

Scoring

The SCv Abraxis has a value of 5,000 points, so be sure to get the kill for it. Fire off several Maxim and/or Trebuchet shots (and be sure to take down the critical forward SRed turret) when the mission starts. With luck, the Nebtuu will finish it off with beams before it gets into flak range. Make sure to keep your wingmen occupied so they don't take away your kill.

The reason for this is probably due to the fact that in retail FRED, score values did not change when the ship class was changed. Volition probably added a Ravana or Demon and then later changed it to a Moloch.
