a note on the veteran comment, though true i think the class was probably based on real world AWACS which are similarly high profile targets but rely on fighter protection for their safety during combat operations. though AWACS aircraft don't see front line positioning, the ranges of modern weapons still place them under threat. Also it allows for storyline elements by providing realistic reason for scrambling a rushed defense for a high intensity fighter mission.
