Alpha 1 is nearly always the player's character. Alpha through Kappa (with the notable exception of Eta, which rarely appears) are used regularly for fighter wings. Lambda is used frequently for transports and freighters. Omega is used occasionally for transports. In FS1 missions with allied Terrans and Vasudans, Terran wings are usually from the first half of the alphabet while Vasudan wings are usually from the second half of the alphabet. The only FreeSpace 1 missions that violate this "rule" are The Great Hunt and Good Luck (with Epsilon wing of Thoths). Therefore, this cannot be taken as a canon convention, but instead a preference of certain Volition mission designers, like Shivan wing naming patterns.
A mission designer need not follow this naming system, although this system is very common among mission designers.
