The Terran Turret is a so-called blob turret (due to its appearance in non-SCP, unmodded Freespace 1 and 2. The Terran Turret has a faster refire rate, does slightly more damage-per-second, and is faster (therfore more accurate) than its bigger brother, the Terran Huge Turret. Both Terran Turrets do little damage-per-second, slightly more than the Prometheus R, as such they are mostly good at destroying bombs as really slow moving, wounded bombers and fighters. The Shivan equivilent to this gun is the Shivan Turret Laser.
I guess the only reason why this and its close brothers are still in the GTVA fleet are because there are alot of them in stock, and require little energy to operate and so therefore can be placed in great numbers throughout the hull. However, their contribution to battles are often minimal. Very minimal.
