The Champion class carrier has extensive figher squadron facilities that allow it to provide combat support from the rear lines. But it is by no means defenseless at close range, it is all round well armed with anti capital ship weapons and point defense turrets.

SF Champion Tech Room Description

A relatively new design, the Champion-class carrier was designed to conduct mobile, long-range support operations for the SF. It's extensive figher squadron facilities allow it to provide combat support from the rear lines, where it can retreat using it's fast-cycle jump drives if threatened. Though it often won't need to, as the Champion sports enough firepower to challenge most capital ships itself.
