FRED tutorials

FRED2_Open, also known as FRED, is the mission editor for FreeSpace 2 Open (FSO). This page lists the getting started tutorials for FRED. The tutorials all cover everything needed to design a working mission, though they represent examples with different mods. Note that FRED is under constant development and improvement, thus the interface presented in the guides, especially the older ones, my not exactly match the most recent version of FRED.

These tutorial walkthroughs touch on everything you'll need to know to get you started in FRED, and it's a brilliant tool. However, it's still only an introduction to FRED. The advanced features and additional FRED lessons are listed in the FRED portal of this wiki, and the FRED subchannel on the community Discord is a fanatic and friendly place to ask for additional guidance and help.

FRED Tutorial for Retail FreeSpace 2

This tutorial is the original walkthrough for FRED that was provided when FreeSpace 2 was first released. This is the oldest walkthrough tutorial in this list.

This tutorial adapts and updates the FRED tutorial walkthrough for the contents of the Diaspora Total Conversion, which used the FSO engine to make a standalone Battlestar Galactica game.
