General
Turrets are equiped on every military vessel, ranging from bombers to super capital ships. In FreeSpace 1, all the turrets were either standard turrets or rocket launchers, with the sole exception of two turrets on the front side of the SD Lucifer, which were beam cannons.
In FreeSpace 2, four types of turrets are feasible: Standard turret, flak gun, beam turret and warhead launcher.
Standard turrets are armed with fighter lasers or standard capital ship turret lasers. This type of turret is controlled by a human gunner. The more experienced the gunners are, the more effective they can use the turrets and thereby get more accurate.

Notes for Mission designers
You have to set each turret's Ai class individually if you want to change the Default Ai Class, set in the table data.
You can also replace standard turrets with beam cannons or flak guns. Changing turrets to warhead launchers requires tabling knowledge.

The spelling 'turrent' is wrong
