MISSION 4/4B
Location: Florence Station, Main Asteroid Belt
Background
The 52nd Nomads are scrambled to perform a dangerous reconnaissance mission and get close-in scans of the Federation superweapon.
Walkthrough
Remember A Monster in the Mist? Same thing, except this time you don't have a stealth fighter.
You can only fly a GTF Aurora in this mission. Taking EMP missiles is strongly recommended, because they'll temporarily knock out capital ship turrets.
You'll start out launching from the Chanticleer's hangar. Once the dialogue is complete, hit Alt-J and jump to Florence Station.
On arrival, you'll see the Charles de Gaulle, a Narayana-class artillery frigate in front of you, with an escort of Uhlans. Hold back with your wingmen until the Uhlans are engaged and the bombers are making their torpedo runs. Then, max out your engine power and make a run for the unknown ship. Use your EMPs to keep the flak off of you.
After the bombers force the Charles de Gaulle to withdraw, the bombers will turn their attention to suppressing the unknown ship's turrets and give you covering fire. When getting your scans of the unknown, hug the hull. The unknown ship has many, many blind spots in its point defenses, including the "jaws" of the ship near the bow. After you've scanned all required subsystems, jump out immediately. If you try to dogfight, you'll get swarmed.
Notes
- The mission name, and the name of the previous mission, are taken from Ecclesiastes 9:11. "I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all."
