Terran defections to the PVE
The following information is classified level Tau.
Years into the open war with the Vasudan Empire, a question has been puzzling tacticians and senior officers: why would, under any circumstance, a Terran defect to the PVE and provide the enemy with crucial data that could be exploited against the human race, possibly leading to the ultimate extinction of Terrans? Defections and surrenders have always been a factor in conflicts, yet the occurrence of these events in an unprecedented circumstance - a space war with another species - invalidates any comparison with past warfare on Earth.
After a detailed evaluation of reports, the tactical branch of the GTN has concluded that defections do not normally occur as a last resort for survival in situations where death would be certain. Instead, they seem to follow a well-defined pattern, with the defectors planning their moves even months prior to the event.
Terran defectors have a multitude of - questionable - reasons. Some see in treason a form of protest against GTA policies and laws affecting their colonies. Others believe that the Terrans are more genocidal in nature than the Vasudans would ever be and are therefore willing to side with the enemy to prevent its annihilation. Many others are apparently affected by a form of 'Exoxenophilia', defined by specialists as a cultural attraction towards the aliens. The betrayal of the human species is not perceived as a crime due to the supposed balance of the conflict, as the GTA and PVE are not deemed capable of destroying each other due to matching technologies and overall military capabilities. Defectors therefore tend to assume that war would culminate in a stalemate at most, with no credible threat to the survival of humanity.
These findings have allowed GTN to optimize the psychological screening of its personnel and ensure that possible defectors would serve reasonably far from the front lines.
Vasudan defections to the GTA
The following information is classified level Tau.
The topic of Terran defectors to the PVE has troubled officers for years now, but it comes second to its Vasudan counterpart. The enemy is characterized by a strong sense of duty and an extremely articulated culture, one that would, for all intents and purposes, make the existence of defectors virtually impossible. However, Vasudan defections to the GTA have been a factor in the war ever since 2322, when the entire crew of the PVC Kheti, in a non-critical tactical situation, surrendered to the GTC Archer following a short fire exchange in Antares.
The motives behind Vasudan defectors are far more rooted than those of their Terran counterparts. For instance, defectors are not rooted by the fear of genocidal intention towards the Terrans, as such an intention is formally excluded by leading rules of engagement in the PVN. Although the Vasudans have been under a single political entity far longer than the Terrans, old wounds from regional conflicts preceding the age of space exploration remain latent in the present-day Vasudan Empire and can spark a variety of clashes at any time. An evaluation of defections has demonstrated that they most likely occur in crews with a heritage linked to the central equatorial regions of Vasuda Prime, where the harsh conditions experienced by their ancestors resulted in deep cultural and economic differences with other Vasudans.
It is worth mentioning that a non-negligible number of defections are religious in nature, with minor cults and fanatics within PVN ranks foreseeing catastrophes based on questionable interpretations of millennia-old scrolls and prophecies. The PVE formally rejects these ideals, thus leading multiple defectors to see in Terrans and their supposed lack of strong ideals a potential audience for these messages. To this date, PVE efforts meant to mitigate possible defections are unknown, and some wonder whether they actually exist.
