The Kato is a user-made Ancient fighter. Originally created for the Inferno Release 1 mod, it has since been used in several other unrelated mods, like the Ancient-Shivan War and Blue Planet - in which it served as a Vishnan fighter.

The original Kato, as seen in INFR1.
The high-poly Kato, as seen in the Ancient-Shivan War.

Description:

INFR1 Tech Room Description

This odd fighter appears to be the Ancients' main space superiorty weapon. Where it has come from after the supposed genocide by the Shivans millenia ago is unknown to the Alliance. The Ancients' agenda is as mysterious as this fighter's odd design. It appears to be compatible with all Ancient weapons, and is extremely agile in combat. Ancient ships have no shields but are very heavily armored.

The Kato is an interceptor, and should be treated as such. It is fast and fairly maneuverable, and has an extremely thin target profile. Though it seems very small and would therefore be hard to hit, the particular layout of the Kato makes it more vulnerable to cannon fire than it appears. The AI also tends to get trapped by the Kato's poor rate of roll and ends up showing you more of a target than might a similar fighter like an Astaroth.
