Baldr is a planetoid orbiting Dubhe, subject to research and exploitation after the Great War. Though little information is known about this planetoid as well as a similar celestial body in the same system, Hodr, both of them provided evidence of an old civilization dating back to 35 million years prior to the events described in FreeSpace. Cross analysis of these findings, attributable to the secret project 9CT, and a general assessment on the evolution of the Dubhe star system, both provided evidence that these planetoids have been colonized by an interstellar species whose characteristics, motives and goals remain totally unknown. Dubhe's red giant phase, combined with active tectonics on both planetoids, have cancelled any tangible proof of this civilization from the surface, whose presence in the geologic record has so far been suspected only via isotopic excursions and other perturbations of the atmosphere compatible with industrial activities.

Baldr and his brother Hodr are characters from Germanic and Norse mythology.
