The AF Kato is a user-made Ancient fighter. Originally created for the Inferno Release 1 mod, it has since been used in several other unrelated mods to represent a fighter of Ancient origin, or of another non-GTVA faction. In Blue Planet, it served as a Vishnan fighter. The HTL version was created by the Ancient-Shivan War mod.

Inferno Release 1 Tech Room Description

This odd fighter appears to be the Ancients' main space superiority weapon. Where it has come from after the supposed genocide by the Shivans millenia ago is unknown to the Alliance. The Ancients' agenda is as mysterious as this fighter's odd design. It appears to be compatible with all Ancient weapons, and is extremely agile in combat. Ancient ships have no shields but are very heavily armored.

Ever since the inception of the subspace motivator, the beloved Kato has been the Empire's most basic and widely-produced fighter vessel. The Kato's widespread popularity throughout our ranks is due to its unparalleled versatility. A highly balanced combination of armor, maneuverability, speed and offensive capabilities allow it to undertake almost any mission profile needed. However, for missions of incredible danger and unlikely odds, the Kato has its limitations, just like anything in the universe. For these missions, more specialized craft within our fleets are needed to ensure their completion. But as the backbone of our forces, the Kato will continue to remain an indispensable asset to the Empire.

The Kato is an interceptor, and should be treated as such. It is fast and fairly maneuverable, and has an extremely thin target profile. Though it seems very small and would therefore be hard to hit, the particular layout of the Kato makes it more vulnerable to cannon fire than it appears. The AI also tends to get trapped by the Kato's poor rate of roll and ends up showing you more of a target than might a similar fighter like an Astaroth.
