Description:
Tech Room Description
The GTB Surt was rushed into service after the return of the Shivans in 2364. Anticpating a long and bloody war, the prototype bomber was readied for action, but never deployed due to the premature end of the war with the destruction of Capella. The Surt differs from conventional bombers by being designed to fire custom shells at an incredible speed. Built to carry this weapon, known as the 'railgun', the Surt uses an advanced accelerator ring, mounted under the main body of the ship, to propel uranium tipped explosive shells. These shells can inflict massive damage on enemy capital ships, but prevent the use of conventional bombs. They also require massive cooling for the ships reactor.
The remaining Surt bombers are currently used by the elite 192nd Bomber Wing - the Black Cats - where they have seen intensive use. It is expected a Vasudan developed counterpart will eventually replace these craft.
Inferno Nostos Tech Room Description
Advanced Terran tactical bomber.
The GTB Surt began life as an offshoot of the GTVA's next-generation bomber development program. Where conventional bomber doctrine requires wings of bombers charging a warship, running a gauntlet of antifighter beams and point defense guns, Han-Ronald designers envisioned an alternative approach. Designated as a tactical bomber, the Surt is a sniper platform, engaging enemy capital ships from extreme ranges, where defensive turrets would be useless, and fighter screens could not engage without overextending themselves. The new Archangel tactical bomb provides the necessary ranged firepower, and a dedicated PAC primary bank allows the Surt to engage warships at traditional knife-fight ranges if pressed. The Surt also is equipped with two SPELLS modules, including the MARKSMAN remote guidance system for the Archangel bomb, and the SMOKESCREEN flare/sensor-masking defense system. The Surt also mounts three defensive turrets for emergencies. However, despite being larger and less agile than the Euryale, the Surt's armor plating is considerably thinner--a concession made necessary by the mass of the Surt's many offensive tactical systems. The Surt has just entered OpEval with SOC bomber squadrons.
