Sam's earlier brush with these unknown entities in the N362 neutron star area culminates in a powerful vision.

It is wild speculation, but it seems reasonable to suggest that the mystical connection between Vishnan and human has a tenuous basis in canon: Lieutenant Ash, in the last moments of his life, claimed to feel a fearful, almost supernatural connection with the Shivans.
