Sam's earlier brush with these unknown entities in the N362 neutron star area culminates in a powerful vision.

Essentially a cutscene.
Notes
The portentous, mystical statements the Vishnans deliver can be hard to interpret, but they make it clear that Sam has a special role as an instrument of greater forces.
A Fredding oversight allows the player to call in a support ship, despite the fact that he is cut off from communications.

It is wild speculation, but it seems reasonable to suggest that the mystical connection between Vishnan and human has a tenuous basis in canon: Lieutenant Ash, in the last moments of his life, claimed to feel a fearful, almost supernatural connection with the Shivans.
