The GVD Typhon |
When the first of the PVD Typhon-class of destroyers was deployed during the Terran-Vasudan War, it devastated Terrans 4th Fleet at the time of its first engagement.
When the Shivans first emerged, both races deployed the best of their forces. For the Vasudans, their task force was led by the PVD Pinnacle. One such vessel, the HLD Anvil served as the flagship for the dissident group of Vasudan rebels, the Hammer of Light.
After the Great War ended, many Typhon-class ships were armed with beam and flak cannons and, in a limited number, saw action during the Shivans' return in 2367. However, the destroyers power grid was ill suited to these new weapons and its forebear, the GVD Hatshepsut, was superior on every possible aspect.

Description:
FS1 Tech Room Description
Where the Aten cruiser failed, the Typhon succeeded well past expectations. The Typhon is an incredible work of engineering and the model of Vasudan technology. When the first one was sighted at the Vega Engagement, it was laughed at by our technicians as a foolish display of non utilitarian design. The subsequent destruction of the GTD Eisenhower and the total decimation of the 4th fleet changed their minds very quickly. The Typhon should never be underestimated. It wields massive weaponry, and has more armor plating than any Terran Destroyer. Its only known weakness is its turret armor, which is significant, but lower than expected. In the two years since this ship first appeared, we have only managed to destroy two of them.
The Typhon is considered a Class A threat to any ships within the same system. Do not engage without backup.
FS2 Tech Room Description
The GVD Typhon was the height of Vasudan military technology when it appeared to face Terran forces during the early days of the Terran-Vasudan War. The first Typhon was sighted at the Vega Engagement and quickly destroyed the GTD Eisenhower and much of the 4th fleet. The more recent Hatshepsut class of destroyers is larger and wields a deadlier array of armaments, but the Typhon is still a match for almost any foe. Up to 30 wings of fighters or bombers can be housed within its docking bays, ready to engage at a moment's notice.

Name origin
In Greek mythology, Typhon attempted to replace Zeus as the god of mankind. After his defeat, he was exiled to Mount Aetna (Etna), and is said to be the cause of Etna's volcanic activity.

Veteran Comments
With 20,000 more hit points, the Typhon is better-armored than the GTD Orion, but the Orion has a much stronger broadside- 66% more turrets in FS1, and 3 times as many beams in FS2. Although the Typhon's anti-bomber/fighter defenses are better than its Terran equivalent, a determined attack by heavy fighters could wipe out 90% of those defenses with minimal casualties, in FreeSpace 1 or 2. The Typhon's only real advantage in either game is two more fighter squadrons.
But perhaps the Vasudans are smart. Bombers are the real capship killers, and the Typhon's impressive 30 wings and better anti-fighter armament would give it an edge in an FS1 battle versus Orion. Particularly in a battle with FS1-style unshielded fighters, the Orion's blob turrets can be dodged, but the Typhon's FighterKiller aren't as easy to shake off. Despite the advances in capital ship defenses in FS2, large ships are still sitting ducks against a real fighter/bomber attack, like in most space shooters.
On the second comment, the advantage of the additional fighter squads rarely comes to play in a mission. FREDders rarely have it work like that. That point really is only valid when thinking pure canon, not how things work in-game.
