The GTT Elysium is a class of Terran transport used by the Galactic Terran Alliance and later the Galactic Terran-Vasudan Alliance. It is stated to have been used "Since the start of space colonization" (although this gives rise to a discrepancy between the FreeSpace 1 and FreeSpace 2 tech descriptions) and remains in use as of the conclusion of the Second Shivan Incursion. During the Great War, the GTA used the Elysium for boarding operations, evacuations, as well as general-purpose transport. As of FreeSpace 2, the Elysium is supplemented by the GTT Argo which has better armor and weaponry, but is still used for lower-risk operations.

According to the FreeSpace Reference Bible, Elysium transports regularly go through minor upgrades, but these upgrades keep the original idea of a simple personnel transport intact.

The GTT Elysium

FS1 Tech Room Description

Since the start of space colonization, this standard transport has been used by everyone, both civilian and military. While it has undergone minor changes time and again, it remains a simple design: A vehicle meant to transport personnel from one place to another.

FS2 Tech Room Description

The GTT Elysium class of transports has been in service for over 40 years. Its mission hasn't changed from the time of the Great War - to transport civilian and military personnel from one star system to another. The Elysium is very poorly armed, with a single Subach HL-7 cannon, and also suffers from thin armor plating. Only desperate circumstances find Elysiums anywhere near the front lines. Assaults and dangerous transport missions handled almost exclusively by the much tougher GTT Argo class.

Name origin

Elysion (Latinized spelling Elysium) was a section in the Greek Underworld. It is a graveyard for the spirit of those who were heroic and virtuous. That place is comparable, under certain points of view, to the Paradise.

Putting this transport in a battlefield is like putting a shoe-box in a firing range: it's just not going to survive. The ML-16 / HL-7 turret isn't going to deter anything but a wounded Zeus.

The Elysium has absolutely no combat value whatsoever. However, it is fairly maneuverable and fast, but that doesn't stop it from being a hassle to protect or being extremely easy to destroy.

The Elysium's speed and maneuverability, perversely, only serve to make it more difficult to escort properly. It is just fast enough to get out of the range where you can easily respond to threats while you're dogfighting the first one that comes along, but not fast enough to actually protect it in any way.

Can be vaporized by an Erinyes with dual Maxims in less than 2 seconds. If you're escorting one, make absolutely sure there are no enemies attacking it, as it will get destroyed if there are.
