The GVF Thoth is a Vasudan-designed light fighter. During the Terran-Vasudan War and Great War, the Thoth was widely regarded to be the most dangerous ship that the Vasudans could offer. Originally brought into service under the Parliamentary Vasudan Navy (PVN), the only shipyards that manufactured the Thoth defected to the Hammer of Light (HoL) shortly after the arrival of the Shivans. Consequently, the HoL used the Thoth as their primary fighter. The aftermath of Operation Templar would see the HoL destroyed, and these shipyards brought back under the PVN's control.

With an extremely thin profile, a large secondary bank, high marks for speed and maneuverability, good weapons compatibility and a single, quad-linked primary fire system, the Thoth is let down only by the placement of its primary gun mounts, its weak shield system and thin armor plating. Even during the time of the NTF Rebellion and Second Shivan Incursion, the Thoth can still be more than a match for most modern fighters in the hands of a skilled pilot.

Description:

FS1 Tech Room Description

The Thoth is the most dangerous ship to be created by the PVN. Manufactured solely at the Altairian Ship Yards, the Thoth has only been produced in small numbers as of yet. When the Altairian Yards defected to the Hammer of Light rebels, the production of Thoths by the PVN dropped to nil. The Thoth is now completely in the hands of the Hammer of Light.

What makes the Thoth so versatile is its small size, extremely high maneuverability, and advanced weapon systems. It is extremely difficult to hit, in the hands of a skilled pilot. The design for the Thoth was simultaneous with the design for the Ulysses, and these two ships were designed by some of the same technicians. Thus they are quite a match for our Ulysses class fighters. This is why they are considered a B class threat. Any non registered Thoths should be destroyed immediately, and their presence reported upon completion of the mission.

FS2 Tech Room Description

The GVF Thoth has been manufactured exclusively in the Sahr Corp.'s shipyards at Altair for over 40 years. During the heyday of the Hammer of Light, the HoL captured these yards and the Thoth became a primary fighter among HoL forces. When these shipyards were recaptured, the Thoth once again became an important component of the Vasudan navy. In the hands of a skilled pilot, the Thoth's maneuverability and small size make it a hard target to hit. A single missile bank means that a Thoth pilot relies on his primary weapons to make most kills.

Developer Notes

Excellent fighter. Small and hard to hit, with speed and maneuverability to match. Good payload makes it the most versatile fighter in the PVN.

Name origin

Thoth was an important god in Egyptian mythology. His roles were numerous, and vary between sources. He is most commonly associated with mediating disputes between good and evil. He is also considered to be the god to have taught the Egyptians writing.

Odd discrepancy between the construction dates of the Thoth. FS1 clearly states that it was designed simultaneously with the Ulysses, meaning its manufacture could start no earlier than 2335, yet FS2 says the fighter had been in production for "over 40 years." Personally, I accept the FS1 date over the FS2, mostly because of the close relationship between it and the Ulysses. While not designed by the same team, it does say some of the same engineers worked on the projects.

Despite what the FS2 Tech Description says, the Thoth's lone secondary bank is actually quite spacious, fitting up to 32 Harpoon missiles. This compares favorably with the secondary capacities of the Myrmidon and Perseus: it's identical, only in one bank instead of three or two. Similarly, it has only a single primary weapons bank, but has four guns, giving it impressive rate of fire but little adaptability once committed to the field. The main fault with this ship in FS2 lies not in the Thoth's weapons but its FS1-era ability to absorb damage, which is badly deficient by FS2. The Thoth still remains a capable medium and space-superiority craft even in the FS2 era and probably the best match-up the Vasudans have against the Perseus for best all-arounder.

Compared to the Ulysses this ship has superior firepower, but pays for it with much weaker shielding. On balance I prefer the Terran fighter.

Fun to fly but no good for doing real work. You really can't do anything but dogfight in this, and more often than not, you'll have the opportunity to do everything in the campaign except that.

Aiming with the Thoth is a bit harder than with most Terran fighters. Its primary weapons are situated too far away from each other, so smaller fighters rarely receive a full 4-bolt hit. It's like Artemis in this regard.

An effective fighter across both FS1 and FS2, the Thoth is arguably the best fighter from FS1 to come into FS2. It combines spacious missile capacity with a higher fire rate than its Perseus, Loki, or Ulysses contemporaries - the only issue being its lack of adaptability in the field. On many occasions this may not prove to be an issue, particularly with a loadout of Prometheus Ses and Tornados, but FS2 ships as a whole do a much better job of adapting to situations as they change. The Thoth just doesn't have that ability.
