The ST Azrael is a Shivan-designed vessel. The role of the Azrael appears to be that of a transport, as it is capable of housing large numbers of Shivans in its hold. The Azrael is woefully armed, with only three light lasers, a maximum velocity of 55 m/s, and just below two-thirds the hull rating of a GTT Elysium to ward off attackers. The placement of the Azrael's engine subsystem also makes it extremely impossible to be disabled within a short window of time.

FS1 Tech Room Description

The Azrael is most likely a Shivan transport. While we are not completely sure of its uses, we do know that they can house many Shivans. It is not very heavily armored, and its weaponry is not too strong. This makes the Azrael the most common target for capture attempts.

FS2 Tech Room Description

Encountered on rare occasions since the Shivans first entered the Great War, the ST Azrael is the only known class of Shivan transport. Little is known about it even now, but it is believed to house many Shivans within its thin hulls. Since Azraels might be carrying Shivan pilots or other skilled crew members, it is always worthwhile to eliminate these lightly defended ships.

Name origin

Azrael is one name for the angel of death in Islam. The name literally means "assistant of god."

The Shivan equivalent to the Elysium, moderately better armed. No problem to take out, but don't destroy them too eagerly in Shell Game.

As for the ship itself, the Shivan Light Lasers are weak, but they're surprisingly accurate and rapid. If you don't pay attention, they'll nibble you down.

Something I've never personally observed but have heard about a lot: the Azrael can't be disabled because of the placement of the engine system.
