ACT 3, MISSION 7
Fighter squadron: 70th Blue Lions
Description: The 70th Blue Lions assist with the evacuation of 3rd Fleet Headquarters in Capella.
Contents
Background
Allied Command has ordered for 3rd Fleet Headquarters in Capella to be evacuated. The installation is being attacked by Shivan fighters and bombers deployed from the SD Nebiros, a Ravana-class destroyer, and Headquarters' defending squadron, the 19th, was annihilated. Taking over the 19th squadron's job, Alpha wing of the 70th Blue Lions is now ordered to ensure the success of the evacuation process.
Walkthrough
This mission is reminiscent of The Sixth Wonder, the main difference being that you don't have to deal with any hostile warships (with one exception, described in Notes), but you have to spread your wingmen across multiple escort targets over a vast distance while simultaneously facing down many more (and better equipped) fighters and bombers.
Delta wing, comprising 4 Hercules Mark II heavy assault fighters, will enter the field of engagement before your wing, and will already be engaging the Shivans by the time you are done loading out. Be sure to keep that wing in one piece; you'll need it. At the start of the mission, you will also see the GTM Galen, a Hippocrates-class medical ship, near 3rd Fleet HQ, the latter already having lost half its hull integrity, and Lambda 1 an Argo-class transport, docked with the HQ. Ignore the Galen and, for the time being, Lambda 1; the Shivans are primarily concerned with attacking 3rd Fleet HQ directly, and the medical ship will eventually jump out. At this point, follow Command's advice and order all your wingmen to defend the HQ.
The GTD Messana, an Orion-class destroyer, will jump in approximately one minute into the mission. It would be wise to assign Delta wing to protect it, as some Shivan bombers will divert their attention to the destroyer. You should concern yourself with guarding 3rd Fleet HQ.
When Lambda 1 undocks, order Alpha wing to guard the transport, as Shivan fighters will jump in to attack it. You can forget about defending 3rd Fleet HQ for now; that's why the Shivan bombers only jump in 5 kilometers away from it.
Once Lambda 1 docks with the Messana, get Alpha wing to defend the installation again. Lambda 2 should jump in a few moments after Lambda 1 jumps out.
When Lambda 2 undocks with all the remaining survivors from 3rd Fleet HQ, abandon the installation and concentrate on protecting the transport only.
3rd Fleet HQ will be self-destructed by the Messana a short while after Lambda 2 docks with it; thereafter, the destroyer will jump out with the transport. Do not fly in front of the Messana or stay near 3rd Fleet HQ. The resulting shockwave from the installation's explosion should wipe out any remaining Shivan fighters and bombers. If not, destroy them and return to base when you are done.
Notes
- If the Messana is destroyed before 3rd Fleet HQ is self-destructed, the SD Nebiros itself will jump in and finish the Messana's task of blowing up the installation using its main guns, and you will be ordered to return to base. However, this cannot happen during a successful playthrough of this mission as the Messana must survive in order for you to advance to the next mission.
