MISSION 17
Fighter squadron: None.
Description: After flying too close to the sun, Noemi Laporte is offered the chance to join the secretive Fedayeen.
Background
The UEF is currently at a nadir in its war with the GTVA. Task Force Wargods failed in its mission to destroy the GTD Carthage at Saturn after the GTD Imperieuse and the GTCv Hydra arrive and destroy the UEFg Katana, the UEFg Altan Orde, the UEFg Yangtze, and all of their support ships with its spinal mount plasma beams. The UEFg Indus, along with Sublieutenant Noemi Laporte and Captain Lorna Simms, barely manage to escape, the frigate doing a blind jump into deep solar orbit.
While this is going on, the UED Toutatis and her support ships duel the GTD Atreus and her support ships in Europa orbit. The battle is close-range and intense, doing damage with flak batteries, pulse turrets, and torpedoes.
Meanwhile, the UED Eris and her escort are in Neptune orbit, doing battle with a Chimera-class corvette, when the GTCv Marcus Glaive jumps in and fires her spinal beams amidships at the Eris; one scores a hit.
The last scene is the UEFg Indus being rescued by the UEFg Masyaf.
After the cutscene, Laporte is introduced to al-Da'wa, the leader of the Fedayeen. It is revealed that she had to be removed from Captain Simms' side by force, and that the crew of the Indus, along with Captain Simms, are being moved to the Second Fleet's radiation trauma center, and that the Indus herself is returning to drydock to work up.
While that is going on, al-Da'wa offers Laporte a chance to join the Fedayeen, in order to learn the truth behind this war...or she can waste away at Captain Simms' side, of no use to anyone. She chooses the former.
Walkthrough
This is a cutscene.
Notes
- The title of this cutscene presumably references the ancient Greek myth about the young man who built wax wings to fly to the sun, and was killed by his falling to the ground after the sun melted them. Laporte can resemble Icarus at this point, having flown too close to the sun, lost her lover, and fell to earth from her highs of victory.
- "Icarus" is also the title of the background music accompanying the cutscene. It was composed by Michael McCann as the main theme for Deus Ex: Human Revolution. A piano arrangement of this piece can be heard as incidental music throughout Acts 1 and 2.
- A pre-release version of this mission focused entirely on the battle between the Toutatis and Atreus in Europa orbit, with communications from Admiral Calder to the support ships of the Toutatis suggesting that the duel between the two fleets was a feint by Calder to draw the bulk of Steele's fleet so that the Wargods can mission-kill the Carthage. The Marcus Glaive also participates in this battle and plays the exact same role towards the Toutatis as it does to the Eris in the release version.
Total number of forces
This is not a complete listing, nor may it be accurate; the order of battle from the Saturn portion of the cutscene was copied from Delenda Est.
