Story
With over two decades of activity, Inferno (INF) is a mod of historical relevance for the FreeSpace community. Over the course of its development, Inferno experienced a total turnover of its team, which also resulted in major changes to the plots and concepts behind this project.

Inferno is an unofficial sequel to Freespace 2, centered on the restoration of the Sol jump node in Delta Serpentis. 35 years after Capella, the GTVA re-established contact with the Earth Alliance, the warlike rulers of Sol that emerged from the ashes of the GTA.  A war between the GTVA and the EA rages on, with the Vasudans remaining neutral in the conflict. During the EA-GTVA war, the Shivans return.

The core plots of Inferno show what happened years after the Capella incident and the consequent restoration of the Sol jump node in Delta Serpentis. In circa 2400, the GTVA finally managed to restore contact with the Terran home system, only to be faced by the Earth Alliance, the new ruler of Sol which emerged from the fragmented ashes of the GTA. A war between the GTVA and the EA rages on, with the EA penetrating in GTVA territory. The Vasudans remain neutral in the conflict, a debated choice which caused relations between the two species in the GTVA to be somehow politically compromised. In such an intricate tactical and political scenario, the Shivans once again appear to threaten the existence of Terrans and Vasudans alike.

In addition to the main Post-Capella plot, Inferno covers the events that occurred in Sol following the destruction of the SD Lucifer in 2335. In these sister campaigns, new conflicts rage on in Sol between the key colonies of Earth, Mars, Jupiter and beyond, eventually culminating with the emergence of the Earth Alliance.

General notes
There are two distinct Inferno continuities - the so called old continuity, and the new continuity. Inferno Nostos (Nostos) is the only released campaign from new continuity, while Inferno Release 1 (INFR1) and Inferno: Alliance (INFA) are the only two released mods of the old continuity. Nostos and INFR1 are set in circa 2400, while INFA is set in circa 2345. New continuity releases are all intended as upgrades of their old counterparts: Nostos is a significant upgrade over INFR1, and is also meant to go beyond the events described in the first mod, completing the main story; Inferno: Alliance Standalone (INFASA), now renamed as Inferno Alliance Reborn (INFAR), is meant to be a total replacement of the former INFA, focusing entirely on post Great War Sol. A campaign named INFA2, meant to fill the gap between INFA and the main INF timeline, was also conceptualized but progress on it never actually started.
+
The Inferno Classic continuity, made up of Inferno Release 1 and Inferno: Alliance is in hibernation. A campaign named Inferno: Alliance 2, meant to fill the gap between INFA and the main INF timeline, was also conceptualized but no release ultimately was made. Team member Mobius ultimately ended up shifting assets from Alliance 2 into the Series Resurrecta continuity, and these campaigns retain various references to their origin.

The growing number of acronyms and campaigns meant to replace their predecessors instead of further developing and completing the story have led to some criticism with respect to this project. In addition to that, the original INFR1 and INFA releases were affected by the presence of large and unused warships, plots generally regarded as poor by community members, and overpowered weapons. These represent the core issues that the new continuity is meant to address and ultimately solve in order to provide a single and consistent story.

It is worth noting that the original INFASA plans involved the release of small, independent minicampaigns meant to make use of the models and armaments not shown in the main INFASA campaign, which was set in Sol. These included Vasudan and Shivan fleets balanced for 1 warfare. Several such minicampaigns were started but remained in hiatus for years; ultimately, they became part of a completely different project under the lead of team member Mobius, named Series Resurrecta (SR, SerRes). These campaigns retain various references to their INF origin.

The current plans are focused on Nostos, including the release of R2 and R3 which will complete the main Inferno timeline. INFAR is temporarily on hold.
+
Inferno Nostos is a reboot of the Inferno continuity.  Nostos 1, a reboot of the original Inferno Release 1, was released in 2018.  As of November 2024, Nostos 2 is currently in beta testing and voice-acting.  Nostos 3, which completes the Inferno cycle, is slated for release in late 2025.

Inferno Nostos is a total overhaul of its predecessor (INFR1) and its supposed sequel INFR2. The first release of Nostos was in 2018 and a new version of Nostos R1, as well as the sequels R2 and R3 which will complete the main INF timeline, are both nearing completion as of 2024.

INFASA, now INFAR, is to INFA what Nostos is to INFR1: a complete upgrade of its predecessor. The main campaign is currently on hold and progress on it is supposed to resume following the release of Nostos R3. An episodic release of its c.a. 40 missions is considered.

Inferno: Alliance Standalone is a reboot of the old Inferno: Alliance campaign. The main campaign is currently on hold, and progress on it is supposed to resume following the release of Nostos R3. Alliance Standalone's sequel, Alliance 2, has not passed the conceptualization phase. A release, if any, will happen after Nostos 3.  Some of the satellite Alliance Standalone content has found a new life in Series Resurrecta.

The concept of INFA2 is meant to described the events that occurred in Sol between INFA and the main INF timeline. However, this project has never passed the conceptualization phase and a possible release, perhaps in a reduced form, after Nostos R3 is being considered.

Story

Inferno is an unofficial sequel to Freespace 2, centered on the restoration of the Sol jump node in Delta Serpentis. 35 years after Capella, the GTVA re-established contact with the Earth Alliance, the warlike rulers of Sol that emerged from the ashes of the GTA. A war between the GTVA and the EA rages on, with the Vasudans remaining neutral in the conflict. During the EA-GTVA war, the Shivans return.

In addition to the main Post-Capella plot, Inferno: Alliance covers the events that occurred in Sol following the destruction of the SD Lucifer in 2335.

General notes

The Inferno Classic continuity, made up of Inferno Release 1 and Inferno: Alliance is in hibernation. A campaign named Inferno: Alliance 2, meant to fill the gap between INFA and the main INF timeline, was also conceptualized but no release ultimately was made. Team member Mobius ultimately ended up shifting assets from Alliance 2 into the Series Resurrecta continuity, and these campaigns retain various references to their origin.
