Story

Inferno is an unofficial sequel to Freespace 2, centered on the restoration of the Sol jump node in Delta Serpentis. 35 years after Capella, the GTVA re-established contact with the Earth Alliance, the warlike rulers of Sol that emerged from the ashes of the GTA. A war between the GTVA and the EA rages on, with the Vasudans remaining neutral in the conflict. During the EA-GTVA war, the Shivans return.

In addition to the main Post-Capella plot, Inferno: Alliance covers the events that occurred in Sol following the destruction of the SD Lucifer in 2335.

Inferno continuities

In its 20+ years of development, Inferno experienced a total team turnover and a number of changes to its infrastructure. For this reason, INF is now divided into two continuities: the old one featuring the first iterations of the project, and the modern reboot featuring a replacement of the early iterations, as well as a proper continuation to the story.

Modern Reboot

Inferno

Inferno (formerly Inferno: Nostos) is a reboot of the original Inferno campaign. The first act was released in 2018, and Inferno 2 was released Christmas Eve 2024. Inferno 3, which completes the cycle, is currently in development, with most missions playable and feature-complete.

Inferno: Alliance Standalone

Also known as: INFA:SA, INFASA, INFA1 (may also refer to INFA)

Inferno: Alliance Standalone is a reboot of the old Inferno: Alliance campaign. The main campaign is currently on hold, and progress on it is supposed to resume following the release of Nostos R3. Alliance Standalone's sequel, Alliance 2, has not passed the conceptualization phase. A release, if any, will happen after Nostos 3. Some of the satellite Alliance Standalone content has found a new life in Series Resurrecta.

Old Continuity

The Inferno Classic continuity, made up of Inferno Release 1 and Inferno: Alliance is in hibernation. No development has taken place since the 2010s. A campaign named Inferno: Alliance 2, meant to fill the gap between INFA and the main INF timeline, was also conceptualized but no release ultimately was made. Team member Mobius ultimately ended up shifting assets from Alliance 2 into the Series Resurrecta continuity, and these campaigns retain various references to their origin.

Inferno Classic

Also known as Inferno R1

Mostly known with the abbreviation INFR1, this is the first release of the Inferno project, dating back to 2003. INFR1 is compatible with Freespace Open thanks to a patch and additional support. A voice acted version of INFR1 was released on July 16th, 2023 for the 20th Anniversary of the mod. No development on a sequel is planned. All work on INFR's sequels stopped in the late 2010s.

Inferno: Alliance

Inferno: Alliance, or INFA, is another MOD ideated by Woomeister and released in late 2006. It takes place in Sol many years after the collapse of the jump node connecting the system to Delta Serpentis. The campaign was focused on the war between Earth and Mars, leading to the foundation of the Earth Alliance.
